Once again we have the housewife who, while not taking down Miss Ellen's portieres to make her gown, did manage to have her gown and kitchen curtains made from the same material leading to the clothed part of her torso blending, almost to the point of disappearing, into the background scenery. Maybe she was carrying the tray to give uplift her exposed bossom or maybe the tray was there to catch her bossom should it fall out of the dress.

It is interesting that the ad is blatantly directed at husbands, both in the wording and the garb of the woman, showing just who bought major appliances back then. One of the resons given for the downfall of W.T. Grant & Co. was that they decided to sell major appliances when men did not shop in the store. Men shopped Sears for many things so they knew where the appliance department was when it was time to add a new appliance to the home or replace an older one. Our next door neighbor's husband worked at Rich's and I was told that he picked out the 1960 GE washer. It replaced their waterfall front Kenmore that did a strange thing. When it started to spin, the agitator gave a turn or two, maybe until the clothes spun away from it, then just stopped and remained stationary during the spin.

Sorry to go so far afield. The dress was probably not washable which brings up the question of why she is not wearing a hostess apron. My mother had a bunch of them.

Strange on that Kenmore- if it agitated then why did I lock up in spin? Did it squeal?

Jon, No squeal, but it did not lock up. I could reach in and turn it back and forth while the tub was spinning. It was just disengaged from something. It was a straight vane agitator.

What the picture doesn't tell you is that this lady is married to the local Hotpoint dealer, and her "kitchen" is an extension of his showroom.  The dishwasher is always the latest model and never runs - just displays clean dishes; same goes for all of the other appliances - latest models.  The range is totally lacking of grease spatters, no spilled anything or outdated food in the refrigerator (everything tastefully displayed).

 

How does she manage to keep it so pristine?  Silly boys - they have their meals, dinner parties, and teas catered.

 

Actually, I've always liked this photo.  Love the combination of colors.  Can anyone put a time stamp on the ad?

The agitator on a WP/KM belt-drive (and direct-drive) is disengaged during spin.  It rotates only by way of whatever degree of friction comes into play from the spin tube bearings and seals (and perhaps some other parts) against the agitator drive shaft.  I've seen cases in which, for whatever reason, there wasn't enough friction to get the agitator spinning but to a fraction of the full basket speed.

The agitator cam and clip that fits atop the basket drive block were later implemented to provide a more positive drive for the agitator during spin to insure enough RPM for the centrifugal softener dispenser to function properly.

Thank you, Glenn! I wonder if ours turned in the 1952 & 1958, in part, because they were Super Roto Swirls with the ramps and big fins and the neighbor's was the less wind-catching 3 straight vane design. I could catch ours at the start of spin and hold them still, but as soon as I let go, they started spinning.
