Our belt-drive Kenmore washer 110.82082100 has been a faithful friend for thirty years (it's probably about 36 years old). Recently when entering its spin cycle, it let out with a dreadful shriek. My repairman said it had something to do with the basket drain, but that he couldn't fix it. It sounds to me as though some bearing or bushing has lost lube. He also said that a bushing was still available. Can something be lubricated or should the bushing be replaced? How do I do this? Help! Thanks.

I'm sure he said, or meant to say, "basket drive", not basket drain. He may have been refering to the centerpost bushings (plain type of bearing) that the basket drive tube rotates within. Replacing those is a huge job.

Thanks for your response, fixer. Uhhh. Not good news at all! (I got the term "basket drain" from the company's invoice; perhaps the secretary got it wrong. Thanks for clarifying.) What are my options? Part it out? Try to find a used basket drive on this forum? Try to install new bushings myself? Try, as a temporary measure, to somehow oil the bushings without removing them? Is this even possible? (I got all enthusiastic to somehow fix my machine from thread #28510 on this forum; mine looks just like the one on that thread, but in much nicer condition.)

Hello Mister Geezer,

I agree with what thefixer had to say and it sounds like the service person was right too, that the shriek very well could have something to do with the basket drive, OR the shifting/engagement process involved with a switch into spin from neutral drain (which has a lot to do with the basket drive). A lot of parts move in this process, so its hard to say exactly what created the noise without seeing the machine.

However, if you have a seal leaking in the centerpost above the basket drive, water could be getting components wet in this area which could be displacing the lubrication that the moving parts need when going into spin. If you have a bad seal leak you could also have wet drive parts. It is also possible that seals are fine and that you just need some fresh lubrication on the cam bar and the basket drive support that moves up and down, etc.

Your machine is between 35 and 33 years old, as this is a high-end 1980 model, which was produced approximately fall 1979 to late summer 1981. The pic below is of my machine, made September 1980. Is this like your model?

It isn't hard to determine if you have a seal failing - there will either be wet mechanicals, or a black oily film either beginning to spray or having already sprayed around the cabinet in the area near the belt.

We can probably help you do a re-seal job. This depends how determined you are to fix your machine.

Sorry about that! I had been writing this as I try to multi-task, so I hadn't noticed your reply 20 minutes earlier. I see you already found my thread about my machine.

Any chance you can post some pictures of the machine's mechanicals? We may be able to see if parts have been getting wet or if they are in need of lubrication.

Most parts are fairly plentiful, I believe the most recent basket drive for these machines (Part number 285897) is still available, or has only recently been discontinued.

Thanks, Gordon. My machine could be a twin of yours! According to searspartsdirect.com, part #285897 is in stock and costs $119.39 -- a price which I would have no problem in paying. I'll try to get some pictures and post them; I'm assuming that you want them from underneath the machine? I would certainly appreciate any help that you could give me in repairing the old girl. I have the matching dryer (still running!) which has had a new belt, thermostat, heating element, and drum roller supports. (One of the supports had the bushing completely pounded out.) It was, in fact, your thread that inspired me to try to fix my machine!

Eric
