I had this week off from work so I decided to pop in and have a visit with Eddy and his partner Rob in Vancouver. They are both such gracious hosts and I had just a blast. It was no surprise to me that Vancouver is just gorgeous. Every time I visit Canada I love it more and more.

Thought you guys and gals might enjoy a few shots from our Vancouver wash-in…

YAY!! Thanks Robert for posting, what a great surprise! Eddy, your collection looks AWESOME...I hope to see it in person one day! That '57 Speed Queen is beautiful as well as that pink GE (with original copper lint filter no less)!! And the vintage Kenmore, what fun!

And also, about the Canadian Frigidaire...I've never seen any Rollermatic with a black tub (white speckles) before!! Reminds me of the 1950-55 Unimatics.

You guys are so handsome. You look like models. That Speed Queen is glorious.
And even better, you stumped me. I can't identify the machine Eddy's leaning on.
What is it? Clueless near Ontario--10 minutes away.

I think I've got it. American Rollermatics sported a much lighter blue "warshtub."

Speckled sky blue if my pre-hallucinogenic memory serves me well. We had one.

Oui ou non?

Very cool! Lots of good photos! I've never see a rollermatic with such a dark tub! How come no inside shots of photo #33? How bad did the Unimatic sudslock?

hi everyone

Louis, yes you have an open invitation to Vancouver anytime! Your favorite SQ was hiding in the garage being rebuilt which is why it didn't make an appearance.
Mike, we did have the Danby twintub out and played with it empty, but no pics :-(
Peter, my machines are stored and hooked up at the house I still half-own with my long ago ex. The space is not huge but big enough to hook the most interesting machines up. Also, some are stored in the garage. My partner and I live right downtown Vancouver, about a half hour drive from the house.
Greg, thanks for the remarks.... I need to chat with you about a TOL SQ wringer Robert and I found. Let's chat soon! PS the ribs are there but are so dark you can hardly see them.
Austin, HOW DARE you bring up that topic about the Beatty Wondermatic. There's a story to tell but I'm so red faced at the moment I need to take a valium and a whole bottle of wine to tell that story.
Jason, we did a load in the Kenmore just for you.
Steve, we tried our best to suds lock that unimatic including using 2 cups of vintage Tide plus a half cup of stpp. That machine didn't even flinch. We could have used a whole box of detergent it wouldn't have mattered.
And Robert, Rob and I had such a fun time with you. I'm so glad you were able to make it here and allow me to share my small collection with you and the fun things Vancouver has to offer. Without the internet and this club none of us would have ever met and I'm so glad that we did.
Eddy

Robert, I hope you didn't drive to Vancouver especially thru Calgary and not stop in !!! If you did and are driving back this way you're more than welcome to stay here. We're an easy find, a stones throw off hiway 1 about 2 miles east of the city limits.

btw I can near see my old west end apartment in that pic on Nelson St. right near the corner of Denman. I trust your hosts are keeping you away from Davie St.

I lived in quite a few west end apartments back in the 70's but my favorite was the Gainsborough on Broughton St. I loved that apartment, huge and vintage.

Eddy, Thanks for sharing your collection with us. Question about the '57 SQ throwing the water and suds: Were you using such a high sudsing detergent that the overflow at the end of the wash did not float the all of suds away or did the '57 not do a long enough Flotation Rinse at the end of wash to send all of the suds over the top? Maybe it was that I always used SQs with low sudsing detergents, but by the time they slammed into spin, the suds were gone.

Thanks again, Tom

What a great collection. What year is the unimatic? Looks like the one Austin has. From what I could see of the timer dial it's the first model with an overflow rinse rather than two separate rinses.

The 57 Queen and the pink GE are beautiful. I thought the GE was a 58 and the 57 was the year GE put the timer on the left hand side.

Now I want the story behind the Beatty!

Les

John, you are correct, we're on the corner of Barclay and Gilford. Where are you living now?
Hi Tom, all those suds in the SQ were the result of about 2 cups of Vintage Arctic Power plus extra phosphates thrown in for good measure. As well, we used hot water for this wash and the fact that Vancouver's water is so soft makes for heaping suds. Oddly enough, the SQ didn't suds lock this time but it has in the past when using as much detergent as we did. The overflow wash on this machine is 2 increments of 45 seconds and the rinse cycle overflows for the entire time except for the final 2 increments.

Hey Eddy, I'm an east side boy now, just Commercial and 2nd but it feels like a world away from the west end. Used to be at Gilford and Comox in "The Kenmore" (appropriate I think)that had possibly the best laundry room I've ever seen, complete with 3 sets of concrete laundry tubs, miles of clothesline and an ancient wringer in the corner! Sadly the new owners ripped it all apart - it was a great photo op...

Oh Eddy, I was just trying to pull Robert's chain a little about sudslock in a Unimatic.(Stir the pot) But he OBVIOUSLY prepared you for it in advance! (He thinks I'm daft----well maybe, but I'm in good company if I am).

Now, how about some more photo's of your collection of SQ's the next time you are able to post them? An inquiring (if a little daft) mind would love to see them.

Also, what is the story behind that pank GE? I just think it would be so cool to find one of those old things.

Thanks again for sharing a good time!

Hey Steve, I've have around 45 major appliances stuffed into this house at the moment, doesn't that make me even more daft ?

I was last in Vancouver maybe 3 years ago and was really put off with the place. Way too crowded, traffic is horrendous, and everythings gone upscale whilst I've gone downscale. We left in Nov 86 right after Expo and while I wasn't too thrilled about the transfer back then it's been a blessing in disguise. Then too most of my friends from back then are gone along with all my old haunts so there's not much to go back to.

Well one never knows, I used to hang out at the Shaggy for the most part and the Central when it was still going. Why I've even been known to frequent the Castle and Ambassador for after work libations errr tea. Heck I even go back to the PPen north and south days when they were byob.
