unfortunately I was thrown to the side of a dark country road on Saturday......it was late at night and pouring down rain, crying as I was destined for the junk heap, wondering if I will ever be of use again, or come back as a toaster!....

it was close to midnight when these bright headlights passed me by, and suddenly stopped and backed up.....oh no, here's a scrapper, and the soon end to my fate....

as I was loaded and strapped into a dark vehicle, I was shaking in my suspension as I was about to be stripped of my parts and junked....could it possibly end like this!....

we drove for a while, and then came to a final stop where I was unloaded, covered in blankets as I could not see where I was heading next, but felt the hug of an appliance dolly, hoisting me on my back, and then placed into a well lit room.....

I thought, here we go, the tools came out, and the dismantling will begin.....but not exactly, my back panel was removed, and hoses and cord were hooked up.....I could spin at this point, but not at high speed......then water was added, and I piddled on the floor.....giving up hope, I know I am heading for the corner for a time out......

I appeared gray all over from years of abuse, but there was this spray shot all over me, and suddenly this rubbing and scrubbing was tearing off years of dirt, wondering what was going on....is there some hope for my parts?....will I be bright white again?.....

resting right now on 'life support'.....and deciding my fate......but it appears I am going to be rebuilt, or at least patched up....may not be Top of the Line again, but will give it one last shot of happiness.....

still wondering who this guy is that has saved me.....and will I be safe here, or will I be adopted out to a loving home.....stay tuned...and pray for me....

I even have an updated version of the spotscrubber valve, it just pinches the regular hose to shut it off, not like the complicated flex valve of before...simple, but very effective.....

the bad news so far.....needed a new pump, the clutch needs a rebuild, and drain hoses are split, and theres a small rust perforation at the filter inlet at the bottom of the outter tub.....otherwise, he's looks to be rebuildable...so far, everything else works.....just in rough shape at the moment.....

Martin....you had me for a min...when I clicked on your posting, I was worried I might read something else.  Thankfully the machine might just make it...and YOU are alright...too funny!

I never cared much about the white-on-white consoles on the GE FF line. And how did that splash guard get so badly eaten? Sewer-Shark?

I love the happy appliance tale too ! Always a good ending when in the hands of 'washer people' !

And now I know the tub walls are cold rolled steel and the bottom tub is made of coil steel !

And that the tub is 1 5/8 taller than the solid tubs were.

Lots of cycle options too, nice score.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him!...

yeah, the white on white is a distraction from all the lettering, some are hidden, especially when printed in gray....like under the spotscrubber knob, it mentions 'mini basket only', almost invisible...the black panels with all the colors seem to pop....

and not sure what happen to the splash shield.....all brittle and broke apart....makes you wonder, what the heck were they washing....

you know, when that filter flo shuts off, its a very quiet smooth running machine....

you have to wonder that some machines seem to cry, HELP ME!....I have found machines older, but in better condition to start with....odd thing is there were no houses around, just on the side of a long empty road in the middle of nowhere.....as if he was just wandering along with his suitcase, and no where to go...poor thing

yes, that rolled steel inner tub was a very interesting article.....and loved how they rolled them into seamless smooth perfection.....you don't find that now with most machines, the seam line is in plain sight...

Great save Martin and cute story. I saved the exact washer for our appliance collection, The last TOL GE FF washer.

Actually Jon the tub in this washer is about 3-1/2" taller in this Extra Large washer.

Great save! I have mixed feelings about the color/graphics of the early white-on-white, but overall definitely a good one to save. Keep up posted regarding the restoration.

sorry if I startled a few of you guys......

it was sort of through the eyes of the machine.......some are lost souls, in search and hopes of a better home.....as so many hidden treasures, we didn't find them, tHEy found us!...

one man's JUNK, is another man's TREASURE!

so far he's got a few holes in his outter tub....that is going to take some serious patching...I have a few ideas, I am not giving up hope on him yet....I like the POR15, but also the epoxy and fiberglass patches have worked in the past....he has had a hard life....amazing how people let machines get this bad....

Post# 793097 , Reply# 15   11/10/2014 at 13:30 (3,447 days old) by TwinTubber (Toronto)
I hear that.....

Those old wasteyards of appliances from yesteryear have seem to disappeared themselves what with today's "disposable" appliances.
My story about the new dishwasher in my thread is similar after seeing the house that it's in, that it would be scrap to most people who cannot comprehend their value.
And the poor house will soon be all ugly hardwood floors and cold granite countertops with sterile stainless steel electronic appliances.
Heck, the house itself I would love to own and preserve as it IS.
But alas, there are some of us that these machines do in fact "speak to" and can't be left alone to rot away possibly missing it's companion dryer who died a nasty and violent death years ago in a lint fire, thus charring my own console and scarring parts of me as I desperately tried to 'offbalace' my spins so I could THRUST water on her with the fullest of my 1/2 horsepower belt-driven motor's strength.
But in the end, I could not save her...she, she suffocated and was so messed up that she wasn't even good enough for spare parts-just a big old, (sob) CRUSHER! Ahhhaaahhhaaa....Oh the pain!
But, as for me. I am here, now, today, and still alive. Because somebody CARED about me :)

Maybe his family found out that he is "different" and threw him out rather than invest some TLC in him because they did not understand what a treasure he could be or appreciate all of his talents. Martin was just the guy to find him.

WAY TO GO MARTIN!!!!

Nice save and loved hearing the machines tales of woe from its point of view. Had a good chuckle when you mentioned a "time out" for piddling on the floor.

I'm sure that you'll get him back to all his former glory soon enough. I'm sure he's thankful that you are the one that picked him up and not some scrapper that would be making a stop at some crusher somewhere.

Keep us all posted on how you make out.

Nice TOL find, Martin! I'm sure it's glad it was adopted into a loving home. You may need to keep it separated from the Speed Queens until they get accustomed to each other, LOL.

That's pretty cool, great story too.

Seems like I have a splash guard that goes under the top opening that is newer and feels more "plastic-y" than the older, more rubbery version. I wonder if that change in material led to a shorter lifespan?

The Spotscrubber was a fascinating system and reportedly very effective. Nice machine, Martin - good save.

As The Basket Turns.

I couldn't resist. I'm glad the machine was saved from the scrap yard. I know that a lot of machines that could be fixed, or just because they look old and outdated, they end up being scrapped, when they could be used by someone who would appreciate them. I hope you get it all fixed and running smooth again. Martin, as I was reading your story, I could hear a Hammond B3 organ with a Leslie speaker playing in the background. That's how I came up with the title. Again, good luck with your new find.

Washerlover, really, Mr. Manly Man!! I'll have you know that Mr. MM can jump over the highest sudscake, see through the most weathered control panel and bust free the mosted rusted spin tube. I think an apology is in order!

well, maybe not a red cape....more like a blue blanket that I keep in the Jeep, just for such emergencies, you never know when an opportunity may turn up, an appliance find, a flat tire, Toga party, S*x on the beach.....I don't think the red cape would go with a Spiderman outfit anyway...

oh man, could you see me in a super hero costume out on a lonely road, saving a machine....SuperWash to the rescue!....right now, even I needed a good laugh like this....lol

but usually I lay the blanket down across the back with the seats down...and I also have a tool box with me, which allows you to place under the front feet of the machine, and tilt the machine up and into the Jeep, and then slide the rest in....easy as pie....rainy nights are not always the best, but you just move quickly, and sort things out when you get home in the garage....

so far this machine is going to need some repairs all over...a great winter project for the snow days of boredom....

Rust Treatment

I also enjoyed the story.

I noticed POR-15 mentioned and thought I might offer the suggestion of a product called "Rust Bullet" instead. I've seen rust re-occur under POR and have also seen it peel off in sheets (my own applications).

On the contrary, I have used Rust Bullet and seen it lock rust out for years, outdoors and not top-coated. It's more like painting a liquid-glass than a painted film. Just my $.02

Good luck with the washer.
