Mechanism and motor. Yes folks, the motor is not what I thought it was going to be, but still happy in that it could be weaker. A shame that the horse power is a tad under the old Hobart Kitchenaids :(

Well as usual by American and it will leave you with disappointed. The machine is great, but for some incredible reason Whirlpool changed the top rack without even an engineering revision. Both the in store model MDB8969SDM0 and the online machine www.maytag.com/-[MDB8969SDM]-1111... have a sloped top rack. Yet my machine MDB8969SDM0, which isn't even an engineering change came with a flat rack. Normally I would not care that much except for the fact I bought this machine specifically because the slopped rack allows for taller dishes and pans in the bottom rack. How 2 identical models can leave a factory with different racks is beyond me but then again with the integrity companies like Whirlpool have it shouldn't be a surprise. Really it shouldn't. Im sure some one the factor made the decision 'lets just put these other racks in' no one will notice. Well guess what I notice. And its getting put up on a forum where half the members poses greater engineering passion than Whirlpool and the other half have a better reality grip than consumer reports. Why do consumers have to be guinea pigs and garbage disposals for this kind of crap?
I hope warrantee can cover this and I don't get the "well if there is nothing wrong with it there is nothing we can do...we reserve the right to make change without notice... well sir do fast food burgers always look like the advert?" At that point I will somehow find ground to sue under false advertisement or unfair trade practice. Ranting yes, but I don't like when consumer always have to be surprised in negative ways.

With that upper rack being adjustable do you have to raise and lower it evenly or can each side raise or lower independent of the other? If it's the later....wouldn't that give you the ability to do what you were looking for? | ||

Oh good grief!!! that's one of the many reasons why I like the Maytag--the tiered upper rack. Wonder what you would have as a response if you called their 800 customer support line. I just went through all 5 models and the "features" tab, your model is the only one that does not mention tiered upper rack. The other 4 have that feature mentioned. I love that tiered upper rack design for at least 3 reasons. I still don't know why I got something else. The weird thing is the pics on Maytag's site show a tiered rack for my exact same model, as well as the one in the store I saw in person. I guess I got a last minute design change without consent.
Anyone know how Whirlpool can fix this under warrantee? | ||

FWIW Whirlpool is going to get some nasty reviews with some nasty Emails. After reading reviews on line it seems like tons of people had issue with the top rack falling down, so I guess this was a "fix" to the problem. So basically if Id had gotten the machine earlier Id find the top rack crashing to the bottom, but I purchased latter in exchange for nothing that fits? Had I known for $100 more Id be happy with a Bosch or low end Miele.
This is why I despise monopolies like Whirlpool. And I do hope Whirlpool is still browsing these threads... | ||

LOL! :) Yahhh, Its under, but Im not complaining to much. I looked at the motors under the New Kitchenaids, Jennairs and High end Whirlpools and they were even weaker than this motor. Id say around drain pump strength. The Euro machines Id venture to say are around this motor as well, perhaps a tad less. So in theory "most powerful motor in the industry" does seem fit.
I will send some Emails and see what they say, but by the looks of it racks have been a major issue for others. I think this might actually be a redesigned rack. | ||

I do believe the TOL Maytags have the standard level rack. The previous generation was the same way. Mine is the MDB4709, which has the tiered rack, but I'm the opposite of you in that I would have rather had the flat rack, because I need the space for tall cups and I don't put tall pans or cookie sheets in a dishwasher. I wish the wash arm assemblies were compatible and we could just switch. :P

Anyone have Whirlpool's customer service Email?
I wrote up a review but it got turned down, apparently it did not meet "their terms". Did I threaten, insult, or use profanity? BS, They don't want anything online that makes them look at fault. Not even an Email 'is everything ok, how may we better serve you'. Talk about arrogant. I cant stand censorship, particularly when its truth. Anyway the review, which I fail to see any violations of terms of use: "Top rack horrible, not as advertised, changed without notice. I received the same model MDB8969SDM however the top rack is not the same design as advertised. I went in store to check this machine out even bringing my plates in prior to purchase. I selected this machine only because my plates would fit inside of it without issue. The in store model had a spacious sloped upper rack with wide tins, same one pictured here. So I said perfect and ordered the exact same model. I was happy not having to wash dishes anymore. Fast forward to installation I discover much to my surprise the top rack is totally DIFFERENT even though the EXACT (yes exact) same model number came. Not even an Engineering change number from "0" to "1"! Huuhh???? Even on the high position dishes in the bottom will not fit hitting the wash arm for the top rack. This did not happen with the in store machine. And the top rack itself is just awful. The tins are so tightly spaced that nothing will fit in between. The metal basket wires bow upward so much cups just flop over, bowls roll around and plates can not fit the insane number of tins. I did not get the same rack by any means. Dishware ergonomics in this rack do not exist. And forget about anything tall. So to sum it up the top rack is practically unusable for anything, half my dishes do not fit on the bottom rack and bake ware can not stand up. So in a nut shell I now have an $800 machine that can only wash silverware. For what? Never did it cross my mind I would get something totally different than advertised. If I had known in advance for $100 extra Id have gotten an Asko or low end Miele over Whirlpool; 2 companies that don't pull off nasty surprises. Reading reviews this could be because a lot of people were complaining of the top rack falling down, so I guess this could be a "fix" for that? Other than that I like everything else about he machine. Sleek, quiet and stylish." | ||

I am "complaining ad nasuem" because outside of this thread no one is of any help. And what Whirlpool is doing isn't dissatisfaction, its false advertising. I am not happy that even a simple review was turned down being appropriate. If everyone wasn't so complacent in just about everything half our problems would disappear over night.
Anyway, thanks for the links, I will give these a go around. :) | ||

Well, just got a message from Whirlpool. They lady says there is only 1 top rack design for their dishwashers. Guess we are all wrong and just hallucinated the others.
Does she really believe Im that gullible? Or are they all that poorly trained? See if I could get honest answers I wouldn't be so angry. At this point it doesn't look they want to take responsibility for this. | ||

They most certainly have 3 different racks. The first would be the one found on the now BOL Whirlpools/Amanas, which were the standard racks in the PowerClean. The 2nd would be the standard single level rack, with the angled middle tines, and the little "humps" that are along the sides for the glasses and cups to angle into. The 3rd would be the tiered rack.
I have no clue why she would tell you there is only one rack. I wish they would put more knowledgeable employees on the customer service line. I called recently about the Bravos' drain pump making a terrible loud buzzing noise once the water is mostly pumped out, and her solution was for me to unplug the machine for a few minutes and plug it back in. | ||
