The Frigidare dishwasher made around 1964 has a ocean green or turquise color coating inside, think its a nylon coating to deaden sound. Below the soap dispencer theres rust and the nylon is pealing. If I remove the rust then is there a way to recoat that area with same/similar type coating if avalible or should I just check the rust and cover with a stainless plate? Thoughts appreciated...tx, bill

I assume it's a "Super Surge" model with plastisol interior? These were introduced in 1964 as 1965 models. What's the model number? Dishwashers that have Plastisol interiors often have rust issues. They aren't easy to fix. If the door is the only place showing rust (look around the pump and where the lower rack rollers are in contact with the Plastisol). If everything else is fine, you might want to remove the whole door and the accessories (timer or pushbuttons and every switch and wire) and then remove all the rust. Then, maybe some epoxy paint that could match the color of the Plastisol.

I haven't seen anyone deal with extensive Plastisol repairs on old threads here. Maybe it has been done by some but I haven't seen pictures. I have tried with stuff to repair racks but it turned out to be expensive and not too good looking fix! Wouldn't do it again.

Plastisol repair kits used to be sold in tubes that looked like toothpaste tubes but I don't think they're available anymore. GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool and Maytag (probably other brands too) did make dishwashers with Plastisol-coated interiors and they all suffered from rust issues. Frigidaire used Plastisol in most of it's dishwashers from 1965 to 1979. The mid-seventies models switched to a white coating and these machines had a molded plastic door so they had less rust issues than those with the blue coating.

If the rust is bad to the point that you need to patch some holes, be sure to remove it completely and use some high quality stuff to fill it... I'm don't think I'd try to cover it with a stainless plate. If it's really bad and you want to preserve it, you might want to weld it or to have it welded... But that's another thing I have never seen here. If you go that route, please document your experiment and send some pics here! It might help others and make me want to make nicer repairs to my 1969 Frigidaire dishwasher!

1968! The "N" tells it. It could have been sold in 1967 but it's a 1968 model.

I have a 1969 dishwasher that is very similar, it used to be a portable but the former owner got the conversion kit to make it an undercounter. That's why it lacks the water level switch on the right. The DW JMP is the Canadian version of the DW-CIMP. DW stands for DishWasher, CI for Custom Imperial (J in Canada), U for Undercounter, M for Mobile and "N" for 1968 models. "P" is for 1969 but there were no 1970 undercounter "R" models so the 1969 models were still being made in 1970.

If you have the chance to post pictures, I'd like to see yours (in and out!).

If the door doesn't have rust issues other than next to the detergent dispenser, you might want to try to repair the smallest area possible. The Custom Imperial models have loading instructions printed in their doors. Unfortunately, mine were already partially missing so I decided to remove them all to repair the door. And I'm not too proud of what it looks like now!

Here's a small video of mine as well as a few pictures. I can't recall all the differences between the 1968 and 1969 models. I think yours has a slightly different control panel and it probably lacks the stainless steel auxiliary wash arm. If I remember well, the wash tower is also mounted in the lower rack on the 1968 Custom Imperial (on older models, it was fixed to the wash arm) and it probably also has a triple detergent dispenser (with two doors and an open detergent cup below them).

I took some pics to follow of dishwasher also pics of the GE electric dryer. Phil I'll send some via email, too hard this way with DU. I think I can get the rust without loosing the print by lifting a little by lifting plastisol with a sharp putty knife?

I got your pictures. It's not looking as bad as mine was.

I don't have the service manual for the 1968 models. I see that they already had the auxiliary spray arm but no triple dispenser and no rack-mounted tower.

The timer isn't working, just needs oil but if I fix it I know my mom will use it more than needed thus more rust. Think to fix it right I need to remove the door and haven't done that before but cant be to hard. Might have to slit that crack some more to get at all the rust. I have a brand new push button control unit, think it has the lamps also. Our DW never had daily use, it would get some rinsed dishes every two or three days then one wash if that much being only my mom, step father and I till I left in the 70's.

That GE cloths dryer is mod. 920A1 W SN. TY 216 951 (1625 watt)

The dishwasher timer might suffer from a bad timer motor gear. I had to replace it in mine. If it works well when you "manually" advance it with the rapid-advance feature but it doesn't move by itself, have a look at the Kingston 60 motor. I did replace the gear in mine with a brass gear from Dave's repair and it works great now. I should order a few more from him...
