The washer pictured has a new control panel and the timer with a Permanent Press Cycle, but the same transmission and agitator as the previous models. The Power-Fin agitator, originally offered in the new tall tub models would take some time to work its way down to the low end models.

That's surely the washer that suited my mom's needs when she wanted to replace the Bradford (which was always breaking & finally needing a repair, that was the last straw) & w/ a MAYTAG washer...

OK to be any color, "so long as she's WHITE", and the same went for the dryer, when the "laundry couple" needed to "match"...  Also a Maytag but a bit more higher up, and in "Snow" as well...

54 strokes per minute. Isn't that a little slow? Was there a transmission enhancement at some point?

Malcolm, yes, but with those high fins it was about all the faster it could operate effectively. As you know, it was not designed for the narrow tubs of the automatics, but the wider tubs of the conventional washers where it gave beautiful rollover. I tried putting one of the old high fin agitators in my 806 when it still had the original motor pulley but the faster agitating transmission of the new "Washpower" machines and, at the higher number of oscillations per minute, it just balled up and tangled a load so terribly that by the end of a 10 minute wash, the load tripped the OOB switch when it went to spin. The Power Fin not only operated at a higher number of oscillations per minute, but could also work effectively when speeded up by the 50 cycle motor pulley.
