My father has a Maytag LA510 washer and was washing a rug the other night and noticed that the washer was out of balance. He noticed the cycle was almost done so he was going to let it finish its cycle when the he heard a loud thump. The machine is dead now, any idea what it may be?

If it was as single rug, it is probably a now broken connection.
I don't know these specific machines well, but places to look for such loose conectors would be the drive motor, the lid switch and eventual out of balance switches.
Least that could have happend is a broken wire or a loose conection, worst a major failure on the time due to a to big current being pulled by the motor, maybe combined with a burned out or shorted motor.
Again, I just try to give instant help. Others will provide more detailed information.

OOB?

Make sure the OOB switch hasn't tripped. It would stop all machine action.

Maytag LA510 washer is dead - OBB?

What is the OBB switch and how do you reset it?

OOB

Out Of Balance switch is part of the lid switch mechanism.
Lifting the lid and putting it back down "should" reset it.

OOB = Out Of Balance

I can't tell you where the switch is, though.  It does sound like that's the problem.

So dog, I suggest you sniff around on Google.  It could likely bring you right back to a discussion on this website.

Maytag LA510 dead

Thanks for the info, can you jumper this switch to test to see if it is the problem?

I'm no expert, but I don't see why not.

Usually a noticeable "click" is heard when the out of balance switch shuts down the machine, although a single rug would certainly be a good candidate to trip it.

However, as Malcom mentioned opening the lid should be enough to reset it. Perhaps its stuck in the off position.

In any case, I would define what you mean by "dead" before tearing into it.

Maytag LA510 washer is dead

Dead= nothing happens, no water input or nothing. Can I jumper the lid switch to see if that may be it?

Power

mrb627's profile picture
Are you sure there is power at the wall outlet?

I am not sure whether a blown fuse would stop ALL machine operation, but it might.

The wiring schematic should be inside the machine front panel on the wash tub.

Fuse...

I just looked online. The A510 machine doesn't have a fuse built into the OOB/LID switch. So you either have lost power at the wall outlet, or the switch is broken internally.

Shades of early "Weekend Update"

If your Maytag doesn't have a nickname, may I suggest "Generalissimo Francisco Franco?"

I remember ages ago on my Maytag 712 shortly after I purchased it that it would not do anything at all and I called in a serviceman. When he got there he just busted out laughing because I had two of the pushbuttons on the console partway pushed in at once and that was all that was wrong with it. Red faced I never let that happen again, lol.

I don't know about that model's OOB system.

Once you get it sorted, sternly advise dad not to wash ONE heavy object at a time. Practically guarantees OOB.
