Hi, great forum, just joined today.

I'm replacing the dampers / shock absorbers on my Miele W2888 and I notice the originals are made by Stabilus and are like miniature car shocks - all metal. The replacement parts I've ordered are from Suspa Italy and use plastic and metal and look a lot less fancy.

Just wondering if anyone knows if there's any functional difference.

The last miele I replaced shocks on used the plastic & metal shock already so I'm a bit concerned I've ordered the wrong part as this was different. The minimum and max length match up though when I look at the replacement shock speca.

Is there any need to worry at all? Check the photo of the one I removed and the one online I'm waiting on. The old shocks are completely worn out.

A bit about the machine.
I bought the Miele second hand for a really good price, shipped interstate since they're petty hard to find in Sydney for a decent price. It has great features like the honeycomb drum with light, washes down the front seal at the start of a cycle, weighs the load and you only hear the water, it's so quiet. The digital display is also pretty cool. It had some surprises though. Smelt a bit funny so after opening it up I found the pipes all clogged with gunk, had to strip the machine and clean everything manually. The previous owner should be arrested for crimes against washers. Inside the sump filter were tree leaves, rusting bobby pins, rocks etc. Smelt like a swamp. Today when I pulled the dampers out I also pulled the sump rubber pipe and it was full of around 20 fancy brass collar stiffeners and more bobby pins.

I think they used a lot of liquid detergent which caused the gunk and spilled something on the perspex controls which cracked the plastic. I suppose that explains the fuzzy single photo in the ad listing :) Anyhow, new parts are on order so it should look and work like new shortly. Bicarb soda, elbow grease, many hot washes and some washer cleaner and it's looking good.
In an unhealthy obsession for fixing things.

My experience with the suspa units

Hi,

I have a W377 machine and it came with the stabilus shocks. They were noisy (clonking and squeaking) and replaced them with the suspa ones.
I bought them (the suspa ones) through the Miele parts agent in Auckland and they were not cheap.

The machine still runs fine (4 years later) but it still clonks on occasion.

I have taken to replacing dampers on Miele machines with LG dampers.
The dampers sold by LG are suspa units too and are also 120N dampers.
The LG dampers are far cheaper and they don't make the clonking sound.

I think the clonking noise comes from the plastic shaft contacting the metal cylinder (Photo 1)
The LG dampers are in contact for the full length of the shaft and don't clonk.

You do have to reuse the metal collar from the old to use the LG damper.

I ended up replacing the shocks with the original dampers from Miele. I think this machine has to use the all-steel shocks because these can move freely at low speeds so the drum can be weighed.

The plastic dampers arrived but they are almost impossible to move, so I don't think the machine could ever weigh 1kg of clothes for the delicate cycle for instance. The shocks take a lot of force before they will move at all, definitely more than a couple of KGs

The drum movement is controlled now although there is usually some movement, but I tend to get a squeaking or chafing noise noise the accompanies the movement now when it's spinning.

Does anyone know what this could be now the dampers have been replaced?

Maybe the springs at the top are run dry. They hook into the frame and can get a littke squeaky. Take the top of (screws along the top back) and let it do a little spin and check if the noise comes from there.

Can you make a video?

The machine never could weigh 1kg. It weighed in 25% increments with the initial measurement being < 25%.

Inspect the load sensor. I had one that made a noise. Does yours look like the image below?
