There are not many choices right now with respect to US manufactures. Whirlpool offers one and GE does too. I am thinking of getting one for a gift and faced with the same problem. Its a crap shoot I think.

If speed queen offered one I'm sure that would be a first choice of this site. ;-)

For full size (24") DW's, Whirlpool and GE are pretty much it. The Whirlpool is a bit more expensive but it's also more updated than the GE. Both have similar noise levels. I'd probably say go with the Whirlpool just because of the updates, but if price is really a concern, the GE would be a great choice too. The older technology on the GE has been around forever and is very reliable. I've had several regular GE dishwashers over the years and they were workhorses.

Ritchie, of the two, Whirlpool or Kenmore.  I looked at both of these as well as the GE and the GE is pretty much BOL and probably their least effective wash system.  The WP & Kenmore at least have 1-hour wash, normal, and pots & pans with at least high temp wash & hot/cool dry options.  the Kenmore versions used to have Nylon racks as the "differentiator", but that's no longer the case either.  also has a soil sensor.  You don't want to look for a vintage portable?

Forgot about Kenmore: I forgot too. Scary how they are not on top of our minds these days.

...and my mother has the Maytag branded Whirlpool portable. Mine has given me reliable service for the last several years, but hers washes circles around mine. The WP design also lets a lot more dishes be squeezed in. Noise level is pretty comparable.
