For those that are "into that sort of thing" ; ) I've posted a condensed wash video of my '64 Frigidaire at the link below. This was one of the first machines I found years ago and still does a great job when washday rolls around. -C

What a classy piece of engineering.

I think I'm in love. The agitator has always reminded me of the Gemini space capsule. I wonder if that helped link the product with the subliminal "Space Age" message of the time.

I wish mine had two speeds like yours!

Nice to see another '64 on Youtube. Here's a video of mine.

Great video!

I love the design and style of this machine as well as how well it works. Has it been rebuilt or is it in original working condition? where did you find it?

1964

I have a Multimatic just like the two in the videos. Mine fills, the timer advances, spins, drains just fine. The one thing that it does do that it shouldn't is that the tub turns as it washes or rinses.
I don't have the knowledge to fix that, whatever the problem is. It sure would be nice to be able to use the Frigidaire.

Gary, I remember you posted about this problem of yours some time ago. Mine needed some work too as the mechanism wouldn't even turn. I replaced a few parts in it but when I reassembled it, it did like yours, I disassembled it again the same day and it was just a part that I didn't assemble correctly (I didn't push it far enough inside the mechanism). Since yours hasn't been dissasembled, I suspect it has a different problem that causes the tub to turn when agitating. Does it just turn slowly or it turns fast enough to spin the water out if you let it go? It could be broken torque spring in the transmission.

Hi Greg,

I actually rescued the pair (this and the matching gas dryer) from the scrap area of a local appliance shop many yaers ago. With Ben's help we changed the trans oil, installed new belts and I recall making a new gasket for the waterpump. It likely would have worked fine as-is but I figured now was the time.

The machine is surprisingly quiet, but you'll note the cone is a little loud- that's because it has a couple broken alignment teeth and 'squawks' just a bit. Otherwise it purrs like a kitten! -C

Phil

HI Phil, The tub spins fast enough to spin the water out. Oh well. Thanks, Gary

Well, if you could find parts for it, I'd suspect a broken torque spring but it could be something else...

You have the service manual?

KUDOS! My bow to Cory (cadman)

Apart from that very nice looking machine: Your video clip must have been some major editing work.
The transitions, cutting several cameras into one consistent clip, wow.
We are no newbie to the biz, are we? ;-)

I know what a tedious piece of work / weekend kill this can be.

Just great. This is how youtube should be, heads up, dear videographers! And not some shaky, yelling (warbled pictures) "scream movie" wannabe "cool dude/ hey man" crap.

Thanks Joe, your comments are much appreciated! Truth be told, I use to mess around with video quite a bit years ago, but it's been at least a decade since I've picked up the camera...just got busy with other things : )

I hope to start weekly uploads of all sorts of odd and interesting equipment around here, at least while it's 10 below outside. -C

How fast is the spin speed

lotsosudz's profile picture
I know on the Rollermatic machines, that the spin speed is 1000 rpm. What is the spin speed on the multimatic's ?

Spin speeds

philr's profile picture

Depending of the year and model, the spin speed of the domestic Multimatic machines varies between 700 and 850 RPM.

The 1963-64 models with the 12 pounds tubs have 710 RPM speed while the earlier models with the 9 pounds tub either have 700 or 850 RPM spin speed.  My 1960 Deluxe has 700 RPM spin according to the Tech Talk manual. The "Rapidry" models had 850 RPM spin until they stopped to offer the 9 pounds tubs.

The newer coin-operated/commercial Multimatic machines like 1966 Robert used to have had 1000 RPM spin to match with the new Rollermatic Rapidry models.

Here's a video of my 1960 spinning:

Early 60s Frigidaire Multi-Matic Washers

Yes indeed Great Videos Cory.

Hi Phil, My 1962 WCI-62 washer still has the speed shift to the faster 850 RPM spin speed, apparently they discontinued the faster spin mid year.

My question was there really difference in actual tub capacity between 1961 and 1964 or did FD like so many other washer builders just claim that their washers could wash a bigger load, I never noticed any difference.

The tubs changed. Compare your early Multimatic tubs to one of your Rollermatics (which are also rated at 12 pounds). They seem to have the same depth but the newer tubs seem to be approximately 1" larger in diameter than the older ones. As for the claimed capacity. I guess you need to find some very heavy material to be able to fit loosely in either of these the advertised dry clothes capacity! Maybe if you wash pants and leave a lot of change in the pockets you could achieve this! Just avoid leaving screws and nails with the change!

I have seen

Robert cram his Frigidaires full,  to my horror, yet he still gets roll over out of them. He's a closet stuffer IMHO!!

Yes the 12 pound tubs are bigger if you stack a 1960 tub on top if a 1963 tub you can see the difference and if you look at the cabinets they are bigger too. 1960 was the last year of the 1950's sized cabinets because the larger tubs demanded more room to oscillate at critical speed.

Hi Phil And Jon, my question was is there any difference in tub size from 1961-1964 ?, I know that the tubs were narrower in pre 1961 machines, the machines was also narrower before 1961, I believe they were 25 1/2" wide and they went to 27" wide in 1961.

John,

You're right about the cabinet sizes that changed in 1961 (both washers and Filtrator dryers went to 27" cabinets) but while the Filtrator dryers were all new and now 27" wide like the previous (and 1961) vented models, the washers didn't change much internally that year.

The 1960 and earlier Frigidaire washers were 25" wide (25½ is Maytag!).

I don't have a 1961-62 machine to measure (I wish I had one as I have a lonely 1961 clamshell dryer!). But according to my Canadian parts books, the part number is the same for all 1957-62 tubs and changed in 1963. I don't know if the Canadian part numbers all match with the US part numbers so there might be some differences in some US parts books...

The first picture shows 1960 and earlier parts numbers (part #5439222 for 1957-60).

#2 is from the 1957 parts manual (shows same part number as in 1960-#5439222)

#3 is from the 1961 parts manual (#5439222)

#4 is from the 1962 parts manual  (#5439222)

#5 is from the 1963 parts manual  (#7522865)

#6 is from the 1964 parts manual (#7522865)

#7 is from the 1965 parts manual (#7523974)

There are hand-written part numbers which I guess were either Canadian or US variants or numbers that superseded the original numbers.  Some Canadian machines have different porcelain coating on their tubs but it seems that some Canadian parts books are copies of US parts books.
