Orbital:

This is an A712 which was of the helical design; one of the last with the long slow stroke. I don't believe the orbital Maytags had the Powerfin.

Peter's correct, this is an Orbital transmission.   You can tell by the smaller agitator skirt with the small fins in between the flex-fins.

A good friend of mine at the time bought one of these for her first home and it was the first time I got to use one.   I had my set of turquoise 700's at the time and was shocked to see what Maytag had done to that beloved design.

Most of these beauties were guaranteed to leak in no time.....

You could bet you money on it!  And sadly most did.

I Stand Corrected

Thanks for the clarification. I stand corrected. So what year was the emergence of the Orbital with the slightly diminutive agitator skirt?

I remember the first time I heard the short fast stroke of the Orbital tranny on Maytags. My immediate thought was "What have they gone and done?" At the time I did not know this agitation method had become the new norm for many brands.

The first time I heard one with the new Orbital transmission short stroke was in like 1991 or 1992.  It was like a part of me had been ripped out.  No longer was there the zen-like soothing hum of Maytag.  You still heard the hum of the motor, but it was shattered by the thunk thunk of the fast agitation back and forth. I'd already had the Lady Shredmore since October 1986 and knew a Maytag washer wouldn't be in my future--the short fast stroke.  I did get my Dependable Care dryer December 1993 though.

The redesigned Power Fin agitator for the orbital transmission was officially christened the Power Fin 12:
4 large fins on the skirt,
4 little fins on the skirt between the big ones,
4 fins on the barrel...
See the pic in the first post album...

First Orbital Transmission Maytag's

Tom and I installed the first one of these that I saw run in person [ the customer was giving up on a Frigidaire WCI-61 and a 1954 GE dryer ] After Tom and I saw the pathetic agitation we decided we didn't need one.

MT was having water leaks from the main tub seal all through the 80s the new transmission did not have any thing to due with the increase of water leaks [ by 1990 WP-KM over took MT in reliability in top load washers and of coarse WP-KM were always ahead of MT in dryers in both reliability and performance ].

Overall the Orbital transmission was one of the best improvements MT ever made on the Helical drive washers , the only problem was the orignal agitator, but once they started using the load sensor agitator they finally had a washer that could turn over a large load AND an agitator that no longer destroyed clothing { a shorter stroke is always better for clothing than a long stroke ] And if you really wanted a higher performing MT HD washer I recommend getting the 50 cycle motor pulley, this pulley speeds up the agitation  15% and increases the high spin speed to just over 700RPMs so it is about the same as a new SQ TL Washer.

My Maytag pair looks similar on the outside console and in spite of being 31 years old, have worked perfect and never had any repair out of pocket. Its the long slower stoke, but does have a much larger Power Fin agitator.
