Hello Everyone, how are you doing? I'm deaf and best friend!!

Before I watched on TV the Food Network, it's "Kitchens in the Future". I saw the old front load 1949 or '50 Westinghouse Washer & Dryer. And its about some appliances for gas & electric range, washer & dryer, dish washer, stove, etc.....it is from old ======> NEW IN THE FUTURE!!!!!

I watched it as well

Peter:

I watched it last night, unfortunately not much on washers and dryers (a nice Westinghouse commercial with a pair of slant fronts). There was some good footage on dishwashers (worlds fair with the unveiling of the automatic dishwasher which did it's job in 7 minutes). It was quite fun to see the future of kitchens from years ago. It also had quite interesting information on microwaves and the fact that they developed them in combination with regular ovens but they had to make the separate for them to become popular.

I still recall when some people were scared of microwaves, thinking that they always made food come out with a nasty taste or consistency, or unevenly heated, or with a weird color ("it's hot but it looks raw..."). Of course that's true if you don't know how to use 'em.

But as with any appliance, there is a learning curve. I don't know what I'd do without one.

And most ecology geeks I know, definitely appreciate the energy efficiency of microwaves.

How well I also recall when "The Future" meant "something good."

Nowadays, more often than not, it means "decline & fall," or "when we start running out of oil," or "nine billion humans on a planet that's built for two billion" or "pandemic bird flu" or just plain "life keeps getting too complicated, too mean, and too full of paperwork."

But somehow, that phrase "the kitchen of the future", like "the car of the future," always brings back "the good memories of tomorrow."

There was a "letter to the editor" in yesterday's local rag, discussing the merits of "eating healthily" and warning that microwave cooking changes the molecular structure of food which can't possibly be a good thing. Kinda funny.

I bought a used Radar Range my freshman year in college in the mid 70's. It was the first microwave my roommate and I had ever used. The solenoid made a loud clunk when you pressed start, which weirded us out at first, so we used a broom handle to push START from a distance.

I can laugh about it now, but at the time, we thought our microwave was wonderful and frightening. Other kids on our dorm floor came over to watch it heat hot dogs instantly and boil water in 60 seconds. It was a hit!
