I was in Home Depot yesterday checking out Agitator Top Loaders and saw that Hotpoint and G.E. both have a model with a Mechanical Timer.

I prefer Mechanical Timer because I can stop the machine just as it is about to enter the Rinse cycle, turn the Knob back to the start of a Wash cycle and get in another Wash cycle without the machine needing to complete the original Wash cycle.
I am not sure I can do this with the eletronic timers.

Back to the Hotpoint.

I learned that Hotpoint is GE's base brand. I am really thinking of getting the Hotpoint because of its Mechanical timer. The Whirlpool I was innitially thinking of getting is almost the same price but has an eletronic timer.

The Hotpoint has a plastic tub and a dual action corkscrew Agitator.

How reliable and durable are the Hotpoints? Model # HTWP1400FWW
products.geappliances.com/ApplPro...

The Hotpoint has the same Motor and belt as the below GE which looks the same but the GE has a bigger tub.
www.homedepot.com/p/GE-3-8-cu-ft-...

The Hotpoint says the wash action is "gentle , dual action"
How "gentle" is it? Does it have the same arc and frequency of oscillation as a Whirlpool?

How does GE compare to Whirlpool/Kenmore for reliablity?

Thanks
I didn't want to clutter the responses so made this thread specifically for the Hotpoint. Hope it's not an issue for the forum.

I have the base GE model which is very similar (if not identical) to the Hotpoint models. I also have the plastic tub. The GE's have a little more color and also a "Regular" setting on each cycle where as the Hotpoint only has "Light and Heavy".

I absolutely LOVE my washer. These machines use a 360 degree arc compared to the WP which i think is still around 210 degrees? You get more of a side to side agitation with less traditional turn over compared to shorter arc systems. The garments really move though and it cleans very well. It's a lot of fun to watch.

From what I've been told these machines are very reliable. It's belt driven with no transmission so not much to go wrong with it.

I wanted the Hotpoint models honestly, something about them drew me in. LOL. But the GE was on sale for cheaper so I bought that instead.

The Speed Queen's are excellent machines and about as old school as you can get. However they aren't cheap. I would have bought one but I just purchased a condo and needed to buy all new furniture so my budget for W/D was limited. The GE and HP are a good value though.

i hope yu find a washer that fits your need because its not easy finding Mechanical timer washers because i am sure that by 2016 we will see almost all electronic control washers and here is a ge washer on its rinse cycle in action and you can see the agitaton of the water

and here is a ge with stainless steel tub on a full cycle

I agree with Joeypete, I have owned GE GTWN2800 since 7-2012 and it is great. Mine has the stainless steel 3.9 cu in. tub. I have never had a problem with it. The cleaning is always great and so is the price compared to the Speed Queen. Now I can't speak for projected longevity, but so far so good. I have left several more detailed posts about this washer which you can read if you do a search. I can honestly say I have been 100% satisfied with this washer and I would buy another without question

Electrolux

Now that Electrolux owns GE, has anyone heard about the future of GE? I just got a new GE oven and I hope I can get parts in the future. I love GE ovens and pretty much like most of their other appliances. Generally well built and relatively trouble free.

To pierreandreply4

I've just been watching the videos of the GE GTWN 2800DWW. I was really into it until I saw that the cloths don't really turn over.

I had thought maybee the plastic tub which has ribs down the sides might provide better turn over or more turbulence in the water than the stainless steel tub but the videos show neither has appreciable turnover.

Does anyone know the degrees the Arc turns? SpeedQueem says their agitator oscillation is 210 degrees. Sadly the other manufactueres don't say what theirs is. I did talk to GE customer service and they said they would try and find out and call or email me.

Question:

From the looks of the GE videos: the Agitator has a greater arc/stroke than Whirlpool/Kenmore. Does anyone know if this means the shaft that connects to the Agitator has a larger stroke/arc than the shaft in a Whirlpool/Kenmore or is the greater arc in the GE purely down to gearing in the Agitator ?

What I am getting at is if I can get the same shorter stroke/arc that one finds in Whirlpool/Kenmore just by replacing the GE agitator for a Whirlpool/Kenmore agiataor?

Imperial70: Thank you very much for the offer. I don't plan on getting a new washer anytime soon though. I'm actually very happy with the GE machine.

Pumice: The GE has a 360 degree arc, meaning it goes full circle every time it moves. The design of the washer and this long arc does not produce the same "turnover" you get in shorter arc machines. It more moves the clothes side to side, but they get cleaned very well. Same movement through the water, it's just more horizontal than vertical. The vertical turn over is slower because of this, but like I said, it cleans very well and is more gentle on clothes.

I don't' believe a WP agitator will fit on this machine, but I can't be certain. I replaced my dual action one with the older "FlexCare" agitator, it's a single piece and does not have the cork screw on it. I have videos on my YouTube channel if you want to see. I'll post the link.
