After picking up my Kenmore 80 washer in January, I was on the hunt for the matching dryer. Yogitunes (martin) found the matching dryer on craigslist in NJ..... New Jersey as you know is quite a distance from Massachusetts....What is a girl to do...?? lol. Well, seeing as Martin was having his annual wash-in, he came up with a brilliant plan...He would pick up the dryer and I could come get it and attend my first wash-in. I rented a van and hit the road on a snowy march 21st at 5:00am. Had an AWESOME time at the wash-in, met a lot of great people, and picked up my dryer. scrubbed, fluffed, buffed, vac'd, lubed, new rollers, idler pulley, and a new cord. Went on ebay right after Martin had picked it up and was very lucky to find all the manuals for both machines...how crazy is that? Here they are pretty sexy if you ask me

That color works well on that vintage, and even matches the paneling. Dare i say, "really ties the room together!"

Those look "just out of the carton" new! I've always liked the Toast color; my neighbors across the street had a set.

Sweet looking set Scott! You have the same washer my folks have at their vacation home. Only theirs is in pewter. Congratulations!

Scott-

That's a great looking set. I can't get over the difference a little hard work makes from when I saw the dryer on Saturday. Your machines look like they just came out of the box.

My grandmother had that same washer. My brother and I each got several more years use from it after she passed away.

Those machines will last for years. Sadly, they don't make them like that anymore.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

How cool that everything seemed to fall in place! I love that color against the light blue wall, it looks really good!
And you did an amazing job of spiffing up your pair of kenmores. They look "OUTTA SIGHT"!
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS on your beautiful toasty pair!
Is the washer a belt-drive or direct-drive?

Lebron, here is the money shot of the washer, and hippiedoll that is a belt-drive from the 80's. Thank you all for the feedback!!!

I love the diagram on the manual that shows the lid laying open almost as flat as it possible can. Guess most owners would bend it back that far eventually.

Searsbest that washer was practically the official washer of the neighborhood I grew up in. Nearly every other house had that model washer. It's great to see one looking like it was just delivered new! Nice job. :)

Automatic Temperature Setting

When the temperature it set on automatic, what were the wash/rinse temperatures on Knit, Delicate, Pre-Soak, and Pre-Wash?

Also, was the agitation speed on Pre-Soak and Pre-Wash high or low?

Wow, these are really nice indeed Scott. Congratulations. I love your enthusiasm toward these machines!! There can't be a lot of perfectly matched pairs in Toast out there, so you've got something to be proud of for sure.

I have loved the black panel machines since my Mom bought a new set in December 1982. I sealed my appreciation for these in summer 1986 when I bought my own new set a notch or two below Mom's.

Your machine is among to best sellers of the 1983 belt-drive line, which had 10 29-inch models in large capacity and one 24-inch machine.

I wish you the best of luck with your machines!

Gordon

A Toast Set

combo52's profile picture

Great looking pair Scott, I always liked the warm toast color and the hi-tech platinum colors when they were introduced. When we did our kitchen in 1987 I used the platinum color for all the Formica cabinet doors and two walls are painted Toast.

A lot of market research went into the introduction of these colors in the early 80s as harvest cold and avocado were losing appeal and customers and manufactures were looking for replacement colors. Unfortunately a number of things conspired to keep these colors from ever getting popular.

1 Independent appliance dealers and distributors were tried of stocking the same appliances in three or more colors.

2 The Reagan induced recession of the early 80s caused a slowdown in sales and a general belt-tightening for dealers and consumers alike.

3 Whirlpool and GE were not getting along and even though all American appliance manufactures agreed in 1976 when almond was introduced to all use the same shades of the different colors offered so consumers could buy their appliances from different manufactures and have them match, this did not happen this time. So even though there was a general agreement that these two colors would be popular with consumers, GEs new colors did not match WPs, GE introduced Sand as their version of Toast and Silver as their version of Platinum and they DID NOT match.

4 This mismatch between WP and GEs colors caused most manufactures to just sit out these NEW colors, no Toast MTs, KAs etc.

And lastly consumers were a little leery of buying colored appliances because of the past two decades of appliance colors and their experiences of trying to buy or replace an appliance and get something that would match what they already had, and that is how we got stuck with all these boring white and cold Stainless Steel appliances.

Hi Scott, it was good meeting you at Martins last week and if you would ever like to make it a threesome in your laundry room I have a Toast TOL KM DD Triple Dispenser washer that needs a new home and would look in your lineup.

John L.
