I know, I know. I need another project like I need another hole in my head. But it looked decent. Although the tub is dry, there still was water in the hose, and I can hear water sloshing inside the washer. I have read these washers can be a toss-up in terms of reliability. They can be trouble prone or fairly decent. I haven't tried it, but for some reason I think it works fine. We shall see.

Have fun!

The water you hear sloshing might be the balance ring like in the Design 2000 style machines. They were sorta getting down to the minimalistic approach with these machines in that there is not a whole lot under the tub to power these things. As was said before, it is a free toy and we have all seen worse looking machines. As I remember, the motor makes one turn in each direction to cause the agitator to turn, you can't really use the term oscillate, back and forth.

What impressed me was the big basket. How many pounds do these machines take? I'm a little bummed out about the lack of a mechanical timer. As you can see, it is configured as a portable, with the hose for faucet hook up. But it can be configured to permanent I'll give it a test run later today.

Good luck with the trial run!

It needs a big basket to give things room to move easily because the agitation is not spectacular. It is adequate, but not spectacular.

Looks like it's actually a more robust system mechanically than the VMW platforms that are now the common agitator top loaders. From the parts diagrams, the gearbox looks to be solid metal, and the pump is horizontally mounted, which I would love my 4800 to be. The pump in the modern VMW machines is vertically mounted directly to the tub bottom, which causes this terrible rhythmic coughing sound when the pump is running "dry".

Let us know how it runs!

Found videos of that machine and its Kenmore version. I can't believe these are late 90s machines! It seems the design leading up to the current VMW platform isn't as new as one would think.

Friends of mine had one of those some years back, did laundry for a family of 4 with it. I used it a few times and it was a fine machine. Pretty quiet and could actually wash a lot. They didn't have room for a full sized washer and dryer, so they had a full size dryer and compact washer side by side, installed permanently. As far as I can remember, it had a crazy fast spin. I always wanted one of my own, but it hasn't happened yet. Hopefully yours works :)

When you move the agitator by hand, it suddenly starts to move, then looses it grip. The motor runs. It drains OK, but no spin. Could it be a coupler?

willing to bet the belt is slipping....you might be able to loosen the motor bolts and tighten it a bit...

not sure exactly what this configuration has underneath....

no spin could be the belt slipping, or the shifter not engaging....usually it works in part, the shifter engages while the drum is rotated slightly to lock it all together, if not working properly, everything is not matching up....

should be similar to a cabrio belt drive machine....

Funny Martin, I had come to the same conclusion. I thought this was a Direct Drive, but there IS a drive belt. From what I have seen from the parts blow-up, there is no coupler. I hope it's not the splutch. If it's the belt, easy fix.

Not the belt at all. The motor just hums may be a bad capacitor.

It's the capacitor (part # 3429938). I removed the motor and connected it direct. Worked fine. I worked the agitator by hand, the pulley/splutch turned true. I removed the capacitor and tried to discharge it...zilch, nada, dead as a door nail. I've looked online for a replacement, $29 used, $47 new. There's quite a few appliance parts stores near me. I'll look there next. Oh yeah, NO LEAKS! Underside of washer was bone dry, zero rust.

I am surprised on how many machines apparently were/are in use in this complex. I mean, there is IS plenty of room for a full size washer. Today was a bust looking for the capacitor. I guess it's best just order it online. One thing about the capacitor that the machine came with, it was used. It's all dented and scratched, while the rest of the machine underneath is in like new shape. So it has failed before.

I did get new hoses for it to convert the machine to a permanent installation.

Whirlpool World washers

combo52's profile picture

WP introduced this machine a few [ in the mid eighties ] years after they introduced the DD washers, these washers were cheaper to build and had a faster spin speed, but unfortunately they did not have great durability.

They were all built in Mexico and all had the same 2 cubic foot tub capacity. The machine was sold in four different cabinet configurations. They sold two different models with a rear control panels, they were both 24" wide had mechanical timers but came in a standard height and a shorter machine as well. They also sold the model that Louie has with the electronic controls at the rear and this last model had a SS wash basket.

The biggest weak area of these machines was a main water seal  that was at the bottom of the wash basket that often failed because of mineral buildup [ generally caused by too little detergent usage in harder water conditions ] and once water got into the bearings that was the end of the machine.

The new WP BD TL washers are a greatly beefed up version of these washers, bigger more powerful motor, stronger belt, greatly beefed up transmission [ note, both transmission designs have ALL plastic gears ] seal and main bearings. The other great thing about the newer BD washer design is that it is very easy to replace a transmission and seal and bearing assembly, so the new machines are no longer a throw away machine.

But overall these little world washers are fun and effective washers, you will have fun with it Louie.  If you need any parts we have boxes of them, we still recycle a few of these machines every month because of bad main bearings. [ Louie if you want to see if the motor capacitor was really replaced before just compare the code date on the old part to the manufacturing date of the machines serial #.

Thanks Rick. One thing I can say about the washer is how quiet it is. Even on spin it's quieter than any other automatic I've had.

Hey thanks for all  info John. We have very soft water here, so hopefully those seals will hold up a bit longer. The capacitor was replaced before I got this machine. It looked all dented, while the rest of the machine underneath was pristine.

Hi Louie, why do you think it was replaced before because it was dented?, a lot of these caps fell out of their brackets and got dented up before someone reinstalled it, check the date code if you really want to do good detective work, LOL.

Fun Videos Louie!

Thanks

It looks like a very good cleaner!  Love that long wash!

That motor really gets a work out on this machine.  I think the rest and cooling down period is actually the spin.

Are you going to keep this as a second or third washer?  Again I think it is such a fun machine.

Thanks for the videos!  Fun!

Oh the Super Wash is even longer, at 18 minutes. Glad you liked the videos, even though they were a tad too long. Next vids I make I'm going to edit them. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the washer, but a neighbor saw it and wanted to buy it on the spot. So down it went to the 13th floor, to it's new home. Stay tuned, another one is bound to pop up sooner or later.

A side note. I always thought Whirlpool built this machine for itself and Kenmore. But I found versions of it carrying the General Electric and Crosley badges. I noticed the Crosley version had fewer cycles.

Do you know what the spin speed was on that machine? I know it was a fast spin. Just curious about how high it was.

WW Motors And Spin Speed

combo52's profile picture

The motor sounds like it is working hard but it stays as cool as a cumber through those generous wash cycles, I have NEVER seen a motor fail on one of these washers. Many guessed that all that stopping and reversing and starting might be hard on the motor but in reality it does not hurt it at all.

The spin speed is around 800 RPMs

The new VWM top load machines from WP are a greatly beefed up version of these machines.

Mine is kind of weird

maytagneptune's profile picture

Mine is the LCR7244HQ0. I noticed something weird. The suspension rod supports have surface rust. (I sanded and paint/primer over it) Something weird I noticed is the gearcase hub/bell where the brake solenoid is has surface rust. However my Lip seal and bearings are not bad??? I saw that then filled it and drained it then tipped it over and there was no water. I ran affresh in it and a BUTTON OF SLUDGE AND RESIDUE INSTANTLY APPEARED. I feel like I saved this one just in time. I used to have the Kenmore one 110.49722990. but it rusted out and my dad recycled it. The bearings were not bad on that one either. Being stupid thinking I was never going to get another one I did not bother begging my dad to remove the gearcase. Serial number indicates Manufactured April 1999. I don't have any water leaks. I think I should replace the lip seal though so I don't have to go through the nightmare of saving up for a gearcase in the event I ruin this one by attempting to take it apart to replace the bearings. The Kenmore one lasted 3 years 6 months on the back porch uncovered through the summer heat then winterized through the snow. I use this machine for smaller loads. I normally use my LG WM2801HW or WM2277HW or Maytag FAV6800AWW or Whirlpool GVW9959KQ2.
