Hi guys,

Well, finally finished a project sometime in the making: I now have colour in my Wilkins Servis automatics.

WS introduced colour in 1976 on their fully automatics: Avocado Green and what they called 'Mod Yellow'. The twin tubs came in other colours as well.

It was going to take sometime to get the actual machines in those colours so I decided to get the cabinets sprayed as close as possible to the original colours. The only thing I couldn't do was have any shading done: it was going to be too expensive

Finally finished putting them back together today...I think they look pretty damn good!!

Enjoy the pics.

Cheers
Leon

Really nice--they are like Maytags from the "drum" money shots!Have agitators like Maytags that I used to know.

I was

thinking the same thing that they look like Maytags inside.

Maytags

Yes: they are Maytags under the skin...but Australian made. But, the stainless steel bowl was unique to Wilkins Servis and Australia.

Congratulations on a job well done. The machines look great! Just out of curiosity, would these agitators have the baffle plate underneath like their early black plastic American counterparts?

Baffle plate

Thanks David, much appreciated. Yes, these agitators still have the baffle plate. Wilkins Servis used this style agitator throughout the entire production run up to about 1978.

Cheers
Leon.

Both of those machines look great! Like the way they have stainless tubs with those agitators. Maybe you could post a video or two of them in action.

Leon, very nice.  What years were these two models actually produced/sold?  Both of them?

Years made

Hi Bob,

The Avocado 501 is a 1975 model and the Mod Yellow 506 would be the final model produced in 1978.

Cheers

Thank you Leon.  The 501 is what Maytag SHOULD have been offering on the market at the time.  Stainless Steel tub, extra rinse option, and I bet some of the other characteristics of the timer dial here in the US.

Hi Leon,

That is so worth the time and money you've put into them. The colours really pop together. I can imagine them in a showroom with the Purple twinnie in front.

As always your work is amazing.

Regards

Nathan

Also, would I be correct in guessing that there are some new machines on the way?

stunning job there! Those are two stellar machines. I just love the colours and always loved those backsplashes- so stylish!!! Must get down under to play !!

The Avocado one looks like a TOL model with all those buttons, what do they do?? I can't quite make out the "Wash And Spin" buttons.

Love the marketing as "Fashiontone Colours"

Nylon hinges on the lids!! Somebody knew their stuff at WS !!

Does the Kelvinator beside them have the centric action dasher??

My cousin and mates are twisting my arm to get my butt back to Oz.

Hey Jon,

Thanks! Here's a better shot of the control panel before the paint job. And yes...the TWO Kelvinators next to the Wilkins machines have the concentric action.

You might be keen to know I have a solid tub Speed Queen fluid drive commercial machine on its way in the next couple of weeks!

Cheers

What a beautiful machine - congrats on a really nice find!

It's a pity the shipping is so expensive from Oz, we'd all have stainless tubs and white agitators in our Maytag washers!

Those are great colors. Personally I like them without the shading anyway. Good job.

Beautiful job Leon, I know you put a lot of time and money into this project, so it is really great to see it done.

I love the colors, they remind me of the SQ commercial laundry colors SQ made for a while in the 70s.

I love the SS wash bowl with the white agitator, can't wait to get one someday for one of our A806s.

With the other good changes WS made to the MT DC design it is a shame they just used the old mold for the Power-Fin agitator, although the orignal PFA did work a little better and was not quite as hard on clothing as the later cheaper to build PFA.  We have one AW member here in Ohio who tried several different MTAs in his A806 and finely ended up installing a Kenmore Roto-Swril from a KM washer and it works much better in terms of both roll over and less fabric damage, I wish I could get him to post a video.

I look forward to seeing your collection one day, maybe I will even bring Jon C. along.

Your machines remind me of many dreams I used to have about finding familiar US machines like Maytags with different and "exchanged" innards. I hope you have a wash-in some day; it would be the perfect excuse for some of us to sample the antipodean world. Plus I love your bridge.

Wow, AWESOME job on those Leon, they both look fantastic!!

Interesting that colors came to the Australian market some years later than the US market.   And boy that "Mod Yellow" sure is bright... love it!

Leon for the close up !

I can see it says Mach Wash Wool and Hand Wash Wool now- interesting in a country famous for wool production.

Woweee a fluid Drive ooh  lots of pics when that baby arrives. You are really beefing up the collection buddy !! Good on ya !

Suds saver, too? Very cool.

Thanks for the control panel pic. For me that's always the 'money shot'. Weird, I know.

I agree with LowSuds. It would be awesome to have a wash-in in Australia. There could be a "proper" ceremony upon arrival for the Pollywogs. Just think of all the laundry there'd be afterward!! The machines would be running for days!

Alas, I'm a Shellback. I think that means I have to help plan and stage the event.

Jim
