Kewl.  Had not before seen that style of timer dial on that vintage of a dishwasher.

Let's examine the Whirlpool Imperial 500 portable dishwasher.

Shown in a beautiful brown color, this will accent any kitchen décor. Portability abounds here. Notice the 2 speed/4 cycle selections, for your most delicate tableware, and fine china.

Presenting the Whirlpool Supreme70.

Showing in the fun summer color of Avocado. Again, a color designed to accent any basement, or laundry room. Note the 2speed/4 cycle theme continues. Only we add the "Magic Clean Filter".

Under the hood

goatfarmer's profile picture

The money shot shows a bit of cleanup is needed, but who doesn't want a fun summer project, or a winter project, when it's cold and bitter outside?

Anyone care to date these two Diamonds in the Rough? Any interest in these machines, before they get put into storage, maybe not to be seen for decades?

Let me know!

Washer is 1971 (W) model year, produced 28th week of 1971 .  My dad's aunt/uncle had that model or one very similar.  Six water levels is notable.

Dishwasher is 1972 (X) model year, produced 17th week of 1971.

For those wondering......

I do have the wood top for the dishwasher. Alas, it's complete, but in poor shape. It would take very little ingenuity to fabricate a new one, using the old for a pattern.

My neighbors

had those machines....one had the washer in white and another had the dishwasher but as a built in!  Is that hard water mineral build up in the washer?  What the D/W...is the rack rusting or was that iron-water or iron pipes that caused the rust stains?

Nice finds, I remember seeing WP washers with six water levels and wondering why Kenmore never had that.

Nifty dishwasher!!  Love the two-speed wash action and the alphabet-keyed buttons to dial positions.   Hope you have fun with them both!

dishwasher door latch

re563's profile picture
The tab in the center of the door. Does it lift up/push down to latch the door or was it just a "grab tab for opening/closing the dishwasher door?

It lifts up and down, it's a latch. The racks aren't rusty, it must have had some water sitting in it for a while, to create a rusty spot like that.

Is two speeds really necessary on a dishwasher?

The motor is not two-speed.  Lower spray force is obtained by either reduced (half?) fill level or by opening a valve to aerate the pump flow.  I believe GE used the aeration method.  WP may have used both methods at various times during production.  Marketing angle is gentle care of china/crystal.

That's not rust,

geoff's profile picture
That's staining from probably the hardest, most iron laden water on the planet it seems. The washer has it too all over the tub. I thought it might have been rust as well until I saw the water inlet is right above it.

To nice whirlpools

combo52's profile picture
The rust stain inside the the dishwasher is just from a rusty water supply it has nothing to do with the dishwasher or water standing in it.

The clothes washer also seems to have suffered from hard water and underuse of detergent. In addition to cleaning it up the self-cleaning filter the side check valve and water pump are probably ruined from this type of build up.
