Is anyone familar with the Vornado window unit air conditioners from the early & mid 50's? I stumbled upon some pics on the internet but have never heard of them before. The design is like the 47 Universal found by a member last year with the unit sticking as far inside as it does out.

I think that the cabinet could be adjusted to suit the window situation. I don't remember my music teacher's living room unit sticking that far in, but the air came out of two round "turrets" maybe? I can't think of a word to describe them exactly, but they kept the classic Vornado fan shape. One above the other on the right side of the grill as you faced the unit, they pivoted around in all directions. They sure offered more flexibility than a Fedders of the time. If you wanted to direct air to the left of the Vornado, you could pivot the top turret up and to the left and cold air would not get sucked right back into the intake grill on the left. If you wanted to direct air down and to the left, you could swivel the lower turret down and to the left and again avoid sucking the cold air back into the return grill. Unlike some of the GEs at the time which could direct air pretty well, the angle of the Vornado's air discharge was not fixed by slanted fins in the grill because the sides of the turrets were rounded like the side of a sphere so they could direct the air at almost any angle. I think there was like a triangle of cross members in the turret that supported the inner ring on the front. Sorry, but that is all I remember.
