General Electric Co. last week rolled out a six-foot-wide, 41-cubic-foot, double-door refrigerator/freezer that starts at $13,999. *WOW* Can someone explain to me why a gas stove (as pictured) is on wheels? Thought for the day: What is going to happen to *high-end* when the economy once again collapses due to the high cost of energy/fuel? Thanks for sharing that with us. |

A trophy house has to have trophy appliances. Don't these biggies impress friends and neighbors. That's probably all they do because these trophies are most likely hardly ever used. |

What's so stupid about the trophy appliances, as any good cook who knows kitchens will tell you, is that if you have such a big budget, it is much smarter to buy several smaller units, whether they be stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators or freezers. Different foods do better in different "zones" different foods cook better with different fuels in different venues, and I defy anyone to tell me that they hadn't wished for at least one extra dishwasher when entertaining. ..and I sure don't have to preach to y'all about numbers of laundry appliances. As for sheer size, sure, it matters, but I'll go for variety any day. |

If I was building a house or kitchen big enough I'd certainly want appliances that would fit like these. It would look rather silly to have a nice big kitchen with average stove and appliances in it. So what if the person can't cook or don't use it, they couldn't cook on regular appliances either. People like kitchens probably more than any other room in the house so it's quite reasonable that people might want to spend a lot on it. Besides it's fun.

So where are the supposedly big washers? Are they talking about HE4T's, Tromm, etc. (sound like this needs to move over to the Deluxe or Super forum) How about any of the 50s' combos? Maytag, Whirlpool, Bendix. Those were the SUV washers of the time. |

(Sound of me stepping up on my soapbox) My dears, it is very simple. The same mentality which led to the Iraq mess, the obscenly over-dimensioned SUV mess and the "you stand with us or you are against us" mentality hits the appliance world. Again. The rest has been better said here than I can put it, so I won't. (Scrape, stomp - I have descended from the soapbox. Raining in the park today, anyway.) |

I was at the house of the CEO of the company I'm working for. He has a beautiful house with many rooms. Every piece of furniture exquisite. And what's in their laundry room? A pair of direct drive Whirlpools. I was hoping to see a pair of FL's or something like that. |
