Today I was waiting for the final spin to complete before I threw some towels in the dryer. There were about 4 Bath towels and 4 Hand towels. When the washer begin to slow down to complete the spin, I heard the tub squeaking and I just kind of stared at it. It wasen't loud or anything but it was audible. It had never made this sound before. And during the fluffing stage you could hear it too but it slowly dissipated. Now when i turn the tub slowly back and forth, you hear a clicking sound. I know for a fact that this isn't the balancing ring because the tub doesn't turn enough for the balancing balls to click together and make that sound. After doing some research I found that this might be leading to the bearing or spider. Any ideas? The model is WFW72HEDW.

Didn't you just buy this machine about a month ago? Its not bearings or a spider in a month... Keep running it and keep an ear on it. I'd bet something in the suspension was making a little noise. Having it happen once isn't a problem, keep using it and if it continues then you may need to call for warranty service eventually.

Its easy to get paranoid when you start searching the Interwebs for a problem like this. Every time I look at WebMD I'm sure I have a terminal disease! lol

@kb0nes

Thanks! Its actually 11 months old. And I do think as well, it also might be suspension consdering how much it vibrates (on the second floor of a wood framed house). I will keep an eye and an ear on it and I will keep you guys posted if it continues.

Well if it's less than a year, it should be under warranty, at least here in the States we have a 1 year warranty.  Not sure about what is offered in Canada.  I would certainly want it on record there was a potential problem  befroe the time ran out.

I remember a few years ago

mark_wpduet's profile picture
my OLD duet was squeaking on and off as the drum rotated one way using Sanitary....but then it stopped squeaking for months, then it started again (it wasn't a horrible squeak, but you could hear it. It stopped again on its own. I haven't heard it since. This was like 3 years ago or so....I never heard any clicks though as I turned the drum.

@mark_wpduet

Thats a little ironic. Because it was on the Eco Sanitize with oxi cycle when it did this.

Just did a load and...

It did it again. The sound seems like its coming from the back of the unit towards the tub assemebly. Next time we do a load I'm going to be ready to film it.

I should also state that during the vibration test while spinning empty at full speed (1200RPM) it did not make this noise when it finished the drain and spin cycle.

Is it like a whistling sound?  Like if you made a whistling sound through your teeth but just fainter?  And it mostly happens on the slower tumble of the rinse?

It almost sounded like

mark_wpduet's profile picture
the chirp of a bird when the drum would rotate (like a quick chirp). Never during a spin, but just during tumbling and I believe it was just ONE way, not both ways. I heard it a few times during sanitary, but not during the entire cycle, and I think I also heard it in another cycle during one of the rinses. But I haven't heard it in a long time now, so whatever it was, it went away...

Its hard to explain, right when the stator kicks off for powering down from the spin, you will barly hear almost a scraping like sound but when the speed comes down you can hear a squeak. The closest I can say it sounds like is a constant chirp. This only happens after the final spin and during the fluffing tumbles and never happens during the 1st spin or wash tumbles. I found a video of what it is ALMOST like but it is much much more quieter and has a higher pitch to it and is constant.

I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that the squeak that I heard is gone! But the bad news is, that now the unit NEVER goes to its full speed for the squeak to be heard when it ramps down. Today we did a regular load, as usual with this type of load, it is able to get it 100% balanced. This load was being washed on the normal cycle, keep in mind you cannot select slow spin speed on this cycle. Only medium and high. I leave it set to high most of the time. Now this is the second time I ran into this problem, last night I washed a small load on quick wash which had the spin speed set to medium. Here is where things take a turn, I have NEVER ever seen and heard this washer do this. Both loads were 100% balanced. They never reached full speed. What I heard the stator do on both loads, was tone down the speed all the way to slow even though fast and medium was selected. On the normal cycle, you cannot select slow at all, yet during the first spin and final spin it went up to atleast 1000RPM (medium), then kick back the speed all the way back down to slow. I'd say the slow speed is atleast 500RPM. I've never seen it force the speed down this low. Even though both loads were balanced and there was no vibration.

Update:

Ran the spin cycle empty, the tub did not vibrate at all, I heard the stator tone the speed down but then it kicked off and went into it's re-balancing phase. It's never done this before let alone spinning empty.

Update:
It seems it thinks that an off balance load is better than a balanced load. We did towels today as well, during the final spin it was completly still, but it thought it was off balance apperantly and ended up screwing up the perfectly balanced load and then just went on without fixing it after that. The washer was vibrating now even though before the re balance it was not.

Mine occasionally makes a little chirping or scraping sound and to me it sounds like one of the springs or suspension and it's not even every time it spins with the same load.  I just don't get all obsessed and worried about it.
