freakin' code talker i am!
Okay this means non huge, non mega capacity...but rather standard foot print machines need only apply.
Do they make such a pair or are all the deluxe features and best designed product only available on the monster machines?
Also, i am already sold (literally) on SQ but am wondering what viable alternatives exist among the other makes.
Remember FL not TL, to keep things simple and apples to apples.

Electrolux

I think the most features you get in 27" is E-Lux. Those things have tons of options, cycles... They are beyond countable.

If anybody ever can proof to me that he used ANY possible cycle on an E-Lux TOL FL, I'd be surprised.

I got our Frigidaire Affinity FL pair because they have the same footprint as a pair of TL machines.  The wash basket size is 3.5 cf.

There are things I don't like about the washer, but the machines are seven years old and improvements have been made over the years.

There also may still be cheaper Frigidaire models available that are the same size and do most of the same things, but are more plain/utilitarian in appearance.

My next set will be Maytag. You get a large 4.3 to 4.5 cu. ft. drum (depending on the model), excellent cleaning, and your choice of bells/whistles---all in a standard-size 27" machine. American corporate parent, too.

Best Non-SQ FL Washer-Dryer

Any full sized machines from WP-MT, but on a scale of overall quality with SQ being a 10, I would rate WP-MT at 4 1/2 with GE and Frigidaire coming in at 3, maybe 3 1/2.

John-- Thanks for confirming my choice of Maytag as one of the best alternatives to Speed Queen. The local Maytag/Frigidaire/Samsung/KitchenAid dealer has also commented that Frigidaire washers are the more difficult/frustrating to work on of the brands he sells. In fact, he's in the process of phasing out Frigidaire laundry appliances at the store.

The local SQ dealer said he finally sold a set of the new front-loaders, but that the customers interested in Speed Queen won't even consider it due to price and/or dislike of the front-load format. He sells a lot of LG and Whirlpool front-loaders, but the SQ customers are all about the top-loader.

I also recommend Whirlpool/Maytag front loaders. I have the Whirlpool version (WFW72HEDW) and it is approching a year old, so far so good. It cleans amazing and it does it very quietly, even the spin cycle.

Due to the drought situation here that still won't be resolved by an above normal rainy season, water concerns will continue.  As a result, I can't see ever going back to a TL machine.

When the Affinity washer decides to bite the dust, and I know it's only a matter of time, I'll be looking into the MT/WP models that fit the standard TL footprint.  The big first generation design Duet we left behind at our other house was a far, far superior machine the Affinity, but wouldn't fit in our current laundry room.

Speed Queen is simply out of the question based on price point.  There are only two of us in this household.  At this stage, I wouldn't be buying a washer for the ages, but for the aged . . .

The Whirlpools and their affiliates are great EXCEPT FOR their button catchers. They're there in front but have no access to clean without removing the entire front off . All other brands that have one have a separate door to access and clean out. It has to be done to keep the, pump clear of any debris or lint build up. Othrrwise,an error code comes on and the washer will not come on. I just got a nice pair (WTW9750 washer and WDE9750 electric dryer. Both in stainless. Both with steam. Both with drawers. The washer works fine but keeps showing SUD on the readout. The dryer.needs a new heating element. Both in pristine condition. A hundred dollars for both!!!!

Frigidaire/Electrolux has the worst design. Not only do you have to remove the entire front panel, then you have to remove the hose from the tub to the pump to get to the strainer inside the hose.

Soft mount Maytag Commercial washer

So i guess you likely have to wire up the required electric service; but these have suspension and a drain pump. And they lack the unwanted/unnecessary coin box.
Any thoughts, how does one of these compare to what SQ offers?
Are there other commercial lines worth considering?

The brand these are made by are known here in Germany, but I just can't get the brand into my head. Something with an A, not Apex or Asko, but simmilar.

However, I see copyright claims comming: This washer festures TurboWash™.

Maytag/WP recently acquired ADC.  They are well positioned for coin op business in the west where water is so precious right now.

Continental Girbau E-Series EH020

This machine has a suspension and can be ordered with a water pump and water heater.
From what i read this brand/model of machine was unliked by US operators a decade ago but have proven themselves since.
I have no idea what they cost however.

I was looking into a similar Huebsch 20lb soft mount machine. Assuming pricing is similar that Girbau will be in the $3500-4000 range.
