We have been shopping for a new washer/dryer set. We've read reviews, subscribed to Consumer reports, and had looong discussions with repairmen and salesmen.

Just when we think we have a decision made we find a few horrible reviews that scare us--along the lines of: This washer failed in the first week/month etc. It's overwhelming and my brain hurts!! I just want to make a good decision that we won't regret.

Here's our criteria:

*Front load washer

*Budget--$2000 or less for the set.

*We don't need a huge capacity washer--there's just the two of us.

*We don't need 25 options for wash cycles--just the basics.

* Not a Kenmore--we've had horrible experiences with their service.

So far we've considered the Maytag Maxima 5100 or 7100, and an LG 4270 and 3370. I've read that Samsungs get good reviews also,

I'd sure appreciate some advice or a few recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

TVQ

Every washer has good and bad user reviews. None are bulletproof. Many here have had great luck with both LG and Maytag/Whirlpool. Personally, I would choose Maytag (my next set will be the 8100's) simply because the corporate parent is an American company. Consumer Reports notes that LG has the best reliability record for front-loaders. I think you're safe either way.

If you are purchasing from a big box store (Home Depot, Sears, Best Buy, etc.) it may be easier/quicker to get service and parts for the Maytags. If you're purchasing from a dealership that does their own servicing, there should be no problem with LG.

Prepare for a spirited debate as more members respond. We are a group that's passionate about appliances.

Let us know which set you wind up purchasing. We love follow-up!

Either one of the Maytags should work:

The key advantage with these is they are made in the USA and are a product of Whirlpool. This will make it easier to find parts and service when they need it. Some say the MTs are more reliable as well. I'll let others here who own FL machines confirm or deny.

My first pick is Maytag with LG a close second. ...Samsung I would stay VERY far away from...

OK--you have all convinced me to stay away from Samsung! My brother has one and has been happy with it, but I'm reading more "not so flattering" reviews.
So now it's down to Maytag and LG--

We are considering the Maytag Maxima 5100, or and LG 4270.........

Keep the opinions coming!
Thanks!

I happend to be out running around right after I responded to your thread and stopped into a local appliance store. Go for the MT for sure. The overall quality seems much better and I liked the layout of the controls better.

We have an LG (older model, but similar to the 4270) and love it. Whatever you decide, make sure you get one with an internal water heater. If you want hot washes, you have to have it.

I guess between these 2 its really more about what you rather like.

The LG is the more flexible and faster machine, with a slight edge more advanced technology. You have a lot more cycles, which turn out to be pretty handy if you don't get fooled by their names. Though it might seem strange, but some cycles don't seem a whole lot different by name, but are 2 entirely different horses. Take Speed Wash and Small Load. One could assume a small load would do fine on a short wash. But, the Small load cycle uses way less water and has different spin patterns so distribution won't take that long.
And TurboWash really boosts the possibilities. LG is the only FL producer in the US that does multiple speed spray rinses. You get the results of a tripple rinsed and spun loads in the time of a normal double rinsed load, you can basicly sum the TurboWash equation up.

However, the WP Duet design has been the same basic system for the last decade: Low water levels, no recirculation, more basic cycle logic. They just sticked with what worked, and it still works. They added some usefull cycles as well.
Only thing that could put you a great step away from the Maytags is their close to perfect, but 2h longer PowerWash cycle.

You could take a look at the Whirlpool models as well. The MTs are close copys of the Whirlpool build units and, personally, I find the choice of cycles and the UI layout more "logical" on the Whirlpool counterpart. You see, if I need something ready over night, I throw it in the machine, select a quick wash, hang it up on a coat hanger or such, and if its not dry by the morning, I give it a quick tumble in the dryer. However, the Towels cycle on the WP uses extended spins between rinses, which can proof to be a big advantage. And, a presoak can always come in handy.

Can I change my answer, LOL?

Having looked at both the LG4270 and the Maytag 5100 at their respective websites, the LG definitely provides more bang for the buck: Recirculation spray/Turbo Wash; Allergiene cycle in addition to the more robust Sanitize cycle and a few other little niceties.

You have to go all the way up to Maytag's top-of-the-line 8100's to get those same features. The 8100's are the only Maytag set I looked at in-depth. Features drop off very quickly as you move down to the 7100 (loss of Power Wash System) and the 5100 (loss of several cycles/features).

Boy, in this particular case....I'd have to go with the LG.

I just wanted to point out again...

.... those Maytags do NOT HAVE recirculation! They have pretty nice fill system which can spray a fresh mix of water and detergent directly onto the load, bypassing the drawer. But its not a pumped recirculation.

The Power Wash system's spray operates only during the fill on the 8100? Well, it serves to saturate the load quickly at any rate. Thanks for the clarification, Henrik.

As far as I'm concerned, sadly yes. Recircs always give this extra feeling of something happening, and at least here, it can't make the results worse.

Eugene,

Are you going to wait until the Labor Day Sales for the LG?

Rumor has it that LG is giving the green light to big box stores to drastically reduce the prices of most of their machines for Labor Day sales.  Next Holiday sale will be Black Friday that most stores will do the first round in October.

Here in Atlanta Lowe's and Home Depot have the LG on sale on their website...but not in the stores.

I was not sure where you were shopping in your area.

Just checked Consumer Reports Online and all the tested Maytags from the TOL 8100 down to the 3100 are rated Excellent for cleaning. I guess recirculation isn't mandatory for great results, after all.

The recirculation on my Frigidaire kicks in about halfway through the fill and stays on for a minute or two into the wash. It recirculates a couple more times depending on the length of the wash time. It kicks in again during the rinses. It isn't 'on' as much as machines with Turbo Wash (LG) and Speed Wash (Samsung).

Brent-- The LG recommendation isn't for me, but for original poster TVQ. I live in a rural area with no big box stores. There are two dealerships nearby. One carries LG, GE, Whirlpool, and Speed Queen; the other Maytag, KitchenAid, Samsung, and Frigidaire. Both are authorized dealers for all their brands and do their own servicing.

My next pair will be the Maytag 8100's. The 2010 Frigidaires remain on duty 'til "new washer fever" strikes, LOL.

Put me in the LG camp.  Really like the Turbo feature, and the build seems very solid.  Personally with Maytag I think you are paying a bit for the name and the cache it used to have.  Now it's just a Whirlpool clone. Maytag, LG and Samsung are all offering a 10 year warranty on the motor and tub, but you pay the labor.
