Can you please tell me which make/brand and design is the easiest and most difficult to rebuilt/restore automartic washers

I would think Maytag for it's simple yet sturdy design.

I believe many parts are still available today.  Good Luck.

May the Opinions begin...

GEs

Are also easy, my beloved direct drive Kenmores are VERY difficult to work on, but I love them.

I find the older belt-drive Whirlpool/Kenmore/Inglis machines pretty easy to work on (but to be fair, I've got 4 and all have been rebuilt to some degree or another).

The  GE Combo had to be one of the worst machines to work on that I've come across so far.  The thing was probably made unnecessarily complicated to discourage the home handyperson from even thinking about trying to mess with it.

Easiest Classic Washers To work On

For major repairs the direct drive WPs and GE filter flow washers are about the best, for more minior repairs WP belt drive or MT helicael drive macines are about the best to work on.

Hi Paul, if you think that the GE combo is difficult don't get any more combos, we always though that the GEC was by far the easiest combo to work on, Jon C and I have been trying to get his 1968 LKM gas combo working for about 20+ years now, I figure that getting it running is good for at least 5 more free stays at his house on Cape Cod, LOL.

Oh, I'm sure it could be good for more than 5 trips. It's never good to rush these things, particularly when there are "free stays" involved. LOL

Shouldn't this be "belt drive" instead of "direct drive"?

I haven't done more than very, very minor repairs on appliances. That said, I think one element of the equation probably should be how much interest one has in a particular washer. While a really complicated design might be best avoided, I think it would be hard getting the enthusiasm to restore a washer which you really don't like particularly.

I note this feeling in myself as far as WP DD machines. There is a lot to like, including what appears to be a much easier design to work with than a WP BD. But...I personally like the BD machines better. I can't imagine lavishing love on a DD machine (although I could see a DD as a practical daily driver).
