My wife and I recently moved to Florida. We bought a set of the smaller LG Tromms because water is so expensive here. Our two Labs are shedding like crazy right now. Actually, they are always shedding :(. Anyway, we can wash a load of clothes and they come out with just as much hair on them as when they went in. We've tried all the different settings too. Home Depot sent out a repairman and he said there wasn't anything wrong with the units. They have agreed to take the units back if we decide.

Now we need to decide which set to buy. We have always used TL and never had a problem with them getting the hair off the clothes. Many people push the FL and tell me to go to the higher end models. I just can't see spending $2k or more on a washer and dryer. I can't afford that much anyway. I was thinking about the GE FL at Home Depot but not sure they will do much better with the hair.

Can someone help us pick a new set? I'd like to get them at Home Depot because I have credit there. I don't have to though.

I have already responded to you on the Gardenweb's Laundry Forum. LG Steam Washer with the water plus option which a new customer posted and said that option filled with water right up under the door seal. That's the most water of any current front loader on the market (U.S. sold) on a regular normal cycle and not simply a delicate or woolens cycle.

I have always heard rave reviews about *classic* GE filter-flo's with regard to removal of pet hair.

And I've already said I'm not spending that kind of cash on a washer/dryer set.

So I should ask a different way. I don't want FL... What is a good set of TL on the market today?

I have a new GE T/L-er.

Neutral drain, lack of spray rinse and lack of filter.

Methinks there are much better options in terms of pet hair removal.

OK... The only reason I keep coming back to GE is Home Depot doesn't sell Whirlpool. I guess I can always go to Sears or Lowes.

I know many people here in Portland,including my aunt and uncle, that have Bosch, the Nexxt series and have been pretty happy with them They sell them at Lowes.If you get the entry level model washer and dryer, really they have enough cycles for anyone, and they are very quiet.

In this same forum there is a thread called "My new Whirlpools". The 5 vane super surgilator agitator has a filter in it. That might be helpful in your situation.

A good top loader would be one of the upper end Kenmore Elites.

Maytag

 The Maytag moves tons of water, has a longer stroke than most and turns a super wash. There is NO discernable agitator noise. Ours worked on a ranch which has horse hair, dog hair and tons of manure and I have never had any problems with hair. Now the washer resides in a snooty suburb in Seattle, with a water view. Mom and dad are still on the ranch and she also has a Maytag. Hers is nine years old and ours is 6 and neither has ever had a repair. They are also amoung the quietest of all the TLs. I like bells and whistles and have the Atlantis TOL. Mom is more practical and has a BOL set with the Performa logo.
All the newer washers are lighter, but I still am not convinced that means they are junk. Many repairs and failures are related to overloading. The biggest issue I see is sourcing quality service, regardless the brand. Home Depot is working hard to reposition against Sears to get a bigger toe hold in appliance sales. In our area they are aggressive in bargaining, although Lowes does seem to have a better merchandised store. While it has nothing to do with function, style is important to a gay man.

Go to a Maytag Home Store...

 ....and tell them that you want the top loader with the porcelain tub. (they only have one model) It'll cost about $549.00 Take it home hook it up....should last about 30 years or so and will take care of the doggie hair problem. Mark

Or do what a friend of mine did: buy yourselves an auxiliary cheap dryer and run your laundry on a no-heat (fluff) cycle for about 20 minutes before throwing them in the laundry. They use the dryer only to remove the hair from clothes before laundering.

Take it from me, Toggleswitch said it best - if hair is a problem, go find yourself a nice used GE Filter Flo washer and dryer set. They are durable, easy to repair, and last a pretty long time. The washers are noisy, but you will never have a problem with dog hair again. I've always had large, shedding dogs, two at a time, and to this day, nothing took care of hair like the GE. The Kenmore with the dual action agitator did a pretty decent job, too, as it filtered all the water as it washed, but it didn't top the GE. Those Kenmore's at least are still available new for around $500 if you prefer new.

 Well I hope we made the right decision. We ended up taking them back and going to Sears. I went there with the idea of buying a Whirlpool but ended up buying the new huge Kenmore Elite TL. When I got home I hooked them up and ran a load of clothes. Guess what... no hair :) We'll see how they are over the next few weeks.
