Hi, we are new members of the "automaticwasher" forums and have decided to explore not just rebuilding / replacing our existing 1992 Maytag washing machine (LAT9700AAL), but are also considering replacing our washer/dryer with a pair of vintage machines.

We have a vehicle which can transport a washer & dryer and are willing to drive a few hundred miles to pick up a worthy pair, which gives us a likely "shopping range" of all of New England plus areas that aren't too far from New England.

We've had trouble so far with finding an appropriate pair on CraigList and figured we should post here in case there's somebody here with a Maytag washer/dryer pair that they would part with and would be appropriate for us.

We'd like something that's functional and good-looking, as these would be in our primary first floor bathroom, which is used by guests visiting our house. We are in the process of planning a bathroom renovation, too, so we can work with the color / style of the appliances, to have them be a significant part of the decor, rather than just the appliances in the corner. Ken particularly likes the center-dial machines with their 50s-styling, but Nancy is more concerned with features like 2-speeds to get the clothes clean yet handle delicates, or a warm-water rinse option since our cold water is COLD straight out of the ground in NH!

We are prepared to handle taking care of and maintaining these appliances for a good long time -- Ken keeps a Triumph TR6 on the road so he isn't afraid of mechanical repairs or tracking down old replacement parts (if only the TR6 were as reliable as our Maytags have been!)

If you have a Maytag washer/dryer pair that might interest us, we'd be glad to hear from you!

Thanks,
Ken and Nancy

Your LAT9700AAL technically is vintage, although it has the newer orbital-style transmission with shorter agitation stroke.

I'm posting this partly because i never saw a Maytag that looked like this.
Hopefully someone will tell us the specifics of this machine.

I would say sit tight and keep watching. Something will turn up. It might be one piece here and another piece there but you will find what your looking for. I went on a quest a year and half ago and finally after about 3 weeks of searching I got lucky and landed a set. People are always putting new ads up on CL. But also keep checking back in this forum as members are always posting things here too.

That Burlington machine is standard capacity, AKA relatively small tub.  The larger tub models will have an "Extra Large" option on the water level selections.

Thanks, everybody, for all of the replies so far!

Good to know that our 1992 washer is old enough to be "vintage"!

Strictlybojack, the first picture you reference (in reply #2) is one that I don't recognize, either, although I've contacted the owner about the washer. I couldn't quite figure out the model # of the washer from the picture, though.

The second pic you reference (in reply #3) has a "large" tub; we've become accustomed to the "extra large" tub in our LAT9700AAL and would have a tough time downsizing.

The third pic of the pair of wringers (in reply #4) would look nice, but aren't quite practical enough for our "daily driver" use!

Super32, thanks for the recommendation to be patient. We don't urgently need a replacement (we have a temporary replacement on the washer) but we would like to know what color we should be painting the remainder of the bathroom, before too long. Maybe we need to stay flexible for a while...

I guess looking at lots of ads has helped us settle on a few "must-haves" for us: Maytag, extra-large tub, 2-speed. A "really-want" is a warm rinse, and a nicety would be those cool light-up control panels on the really old models!

AFAIK no truely vintage Maytag washer (flouresent lighting etc.) has a very sizable tub by todays standard.
I may be wrong, I am still kinda new at this.
Others with definitive knowledge will no doubt clarify the situation.

This one says, "super capacity"..

I tend to disagree about the capacity.  This appears to be a Fabric-Matic model, with the infinite water level selector.  If this machine were standard capacity, there would be only 3 levels (Low, Med, High) plus "Reset".  I see more text than that to the left of the vertical slide...

It's sounds to me like you are wanting either:

An A608 (2-speed, extra-large capacity, warm rinse with hot wash only. No light-up control panel).

Or

An A806 (2-speed, extra-large capacity, warm or cold rinse with any wash temp, light-up control panel).

Both the A608 & A806 models are vintage "center-dial" maytags washers.

Thanks for the additional tips. It's hard to tell what the specific models are in most ads - the pictures are just a little too small to make out the buttons, and sellers don't seem too interested in replying with model numbers in most cases.

Something we've been trying to find on this site, but haven't been able to locate, is a list of features and/or a quick-view of control panels for the center dial machines. Somebody here must have already compiled this somewhere. Basically, we're hoping for something similar to what Maytag produced in the brochures for the 10-series and 12-series washers (as shown below), but for the older center dial machines, like the 6-, 7-, and 8- series. Can anybody point us to that?

Thanks!

Thanks for the continuing advice and help! The links to brochures and threads which describe the options on different models has helped us decide what we'd like to be able to find. Thanks appnut and hippiedoll!

This weekend, we got a strong lead on a 1992-era pair of machines like our current ones that will solve our immediate need for a matched set. However, we've now been bitten by the "automaticwasher.org bug" and really want a center-dial matched pair. So, even if we get the 1992-era pair now, we're going to continue our search to hopefully be able to replace those with a center-dial set before too long!

* Our "dream set" would be an A806 and matching dryer. Our favorite colors are turquoise or almond. The chances of us ever actually finding one of those would appear to be about zero, however. The only ones we've ever seen pictured anywhere are on this forum! (see attached photo below)

* We really want a washer that has the extra-large tub, 2-speeds, a warm rinse, and the center-dial look. Hippiedoll knew that the A608 and A806 provide those options. (It's not clear to us if an A606 also meets those requirements?) The light-up control panel is a nice bonus, but would limit us to an A806.

* We're still trying to learn how to identify a washer model from poor CraigsList photos. The tip on how to identify an A806 by the strip above the center dial dividing the two light-up panels is an excellent one. Wish we knew how to distinguish the other models in lousy photos, too! (Why are good CraigsList photos so rare?!?!)

best you can do if you find a set, it to post pics and link to us here, and most of us can decipher that model for you......

if you get the model and serial number, we can most likely date it for you too!

with exception to an 806....the buttons to the far left at temp, a fourth one will be the warm rinse option....if theres only 3, chances are, all cold rinses....

to the far right would be the load size, just like the agitator, 4 buttons would indicate the largest capacity.....

and I think only the 806 allows separate speeds for wash and spin.....all other two speed models select one speed for the entire cycle...

That is an A608 (2-speed), extra large capacity washer.

Not sure about the dryer but it does have the 2 temperature buttons:
Regular temperature & low temperature.

And I believe these might be a rare mid-70's set, for the fact that they are sunglow control panels, big door dryer (stream of heat), but they have the "shaded" harvest gold color.
Unless there was a cabinet switch??

It's too bad the numbers on the timer knob of the dryer have worn off.

And just to let you know, these are not the A806 washer & 808 dryer, like the seller says. These DO NOT have the control panels that light up.

Just thought you should know that. And I hope my message above doesn't make you feel like you have to get that set. I'm sure something better will come along in the white or almond color.

Hippiedoll,

Thanks for the confirmation that the washer isn't actually an A806. I had also noticed the control panels weren't the light-up ones (now that I know what to look for on that!) and figured that either the seller was dyslexic (most likely) or that there had been a top swap at some point in their history that changed the model plate (not particularly likely).

The harvest gold cabinets really look to be in pretty good shape; I just don't know that we can make that color work for us. If only they were turquoise or copper!

Welcome to the group!

First off, congrats on keeping a TR6 on the road. There are many who'd argue that's a resumé-worthy skill/achievement;-)

As you might guess from my handle I agree with your requirement for a warm rinse option:-)))

Yes, 806's seem to be rather rare. It seems to be one of the few models that make non-enthusiast owners decide, "I'll keep them forever."

I've only been a member for a bit over 2 years, but I can tell you you've found a great group of people. The collective wisdom of the members (excluding myself, of course) is truly jaw-dropping. The range of topics is nearly as impressive.

Enjoy,

In fact, turquoise 806 models were only in production for 1 year when the new big load line was introduced in like 1965 or 1966.  I know one member who found a set in the last 5 years.   Almost as rare for the coppertone.  But it was a beautiful, deep rich looking color on Maytags.

those are the same set...

That Ken-n-Nancy posted a few replies up.
The washer isn't an 806 but is actually a 608.
And being that the dryer is timed dry only, with the low & high temperature buttons, I would guess the dryer to be a 308 (I'm guessing??).

What has me scratching my head is that the cabinets are "shaded" harvest gold, with the lower control panels in sunglow, and diamond-looking acrylic timer knobs.
I thought that once the sunglow control panels came out, the "shading" had already been stopped?

I remember reading that you could get the aqua control panel (that came with the "shaded" colors) with the new diamond-looking acrylic knob for a brief time during the change-over. But I've never read that you could get the sunglow control panel with a "shaded" color cabinet??
Am I wrong??

Might be a bit far for you, but I this is a late 70s A806 with matching electric dryer in white. Washer has a white tub and green agitator.

Those were the better dryers introduced after '77 (correct me if I'm wrong) IMO, because they had a bigger tub, wider door, and upfront lint filter.

The dryer is auto dry control, not electronic dry control--but it has the 2 temp buttons so it's like a 408.

I was thinking 408 for the dryer too. But wasn't real sure.

I seem to like the 408 model of dryer the most because of the flexibility of selections you can choose;
Timed dry, air fluff, regular auto dry, permanent press auto dry, for the timer knob selections
And low temperature or high temperature for button selections.
It's too bad the control panel didn't light up, a little lower down the model line.

The center-dial "Harvest Gold" set I posted back in reply #35 is no longer listed on craigslist. Seems like it must have quickly found a buyer. Wondering if it was somebody here who purchased it?

delaneymeegan: That white pair does seem to be in nice shape; that would be something we'd be interested in if it were within a few hundred miles.

Still on the hunt for a center-dial pair. We know we need to be patient!

hey Ken-n-Nancy...

Phil just posted a white or almond (hard to tell the color) pair of light-up control paneled 806 washer & 808 dryer.
I think in Chicago? I don't know how far that is from you guys?
They might have been sold, but from what I'm understanding, the buyer hasn't picked them up yet. The seller said if they weren't picked up by Monday they were going to relist them for sale again. They were posted for $100.

That's exactly what we want! Chicago is a long drive, though. However, we have family about 2 hours away from Chicago that might be able to buy them for us and then we'd just have to deal with getting them from there to here at a future time. It would be quite a haul -- according to Google Maps, it's a 981-mile drive (nearly 16 hours of driving time) EACH WAY!

$100 would be a steal!

Well, if the set in Chicago is gone, and you can work that location, the other matching set was in Rockford, which is only an hour West.

I'd guess waiting and patience will eventually pay off where you're at. I wonder though if there is more competition. The other option is to consider having the units (where ever you purchase them from) shipped to you. It will cost some, but....
I've had a few things shipped, years ago, with craters and freighter, and they did a real good job.

Best of luck in your hunt.

Hokay let's try this again. How's Reading Pennsylvania for ya?
It is an 806 so no argument there, but it is also white.

Yeah, Phil put those Reading PA machines up on Shoppers Square just a bit ago.  Those would be excellent since they appear to be low mileage, and the DE407 will do until a DE806 comes along.

stricklybojack, thanks for the link to the A806 washer in Reading. If that were a matched set with a DE808 dryer, I'd be all over it, even though it is a 7-hour drive each way. My only hesitancy is getting that A806 will still leave me searching for the matching dryer, which may end up being the newer (sunglow) model. (If it were only a couple hours away, I'd probably get it anyway.)

Maybe we're being too picky -- but it seems that a few A806 machines have been turning up lately.

I just worry that owners are trading their vintage machines in for new appliances and the wonderful old machines are getting hauled off for scrap metal!

For the time being though, we're already getting into a bit of "too many washers and dryers" in the quest to return our 1992 set to operation. Does everybody else here have a washing machine in their living room, too?

There has been one, and a dryer on a couple of occasions but not at the moment.  I have two washers in my master bath (usually three) and one in the master BR closet, and the garage count shall not be stated.

I know someone who used a dishwasher for a TV and Xmas tree stand in his living room.

Hi Ken n Nancy! Welcome to the group. I'm your neighbor up in Concord. I actually grew up in Merrimack and worked at the Bedford Mall (when it was alive and well) at the CVS back in the early 90's when I was in high school. . Nice to see someone local. :)

DADoES, I currently have my Kenmore 28102 sitting in my living room. My friend stopped by today and didn't think anything of it. LOL.

If it helps on the Reading set, the dryers usually turn up before the washer.

I've had a washer in my livingroom for many years. Sold it recently, otherwise it still would be there.

Christina (Hippiedoll)

According to what I could find out, the Sunglow control panels were introduced in '75, and the shading on the top ONLY was discontinued at this time. The shaded color cabinets continued until '77 or so.
