Since I had a vacation day off of work today (big yay) it gave me a chance to put together some videos of the Hotpoint as I had been promising. These video files are large so anyone who is not on broadband its going to take quite a bit of time to download. Right click and save file as if you wish to save these onto your hard drive… Wond-R-Dial Demonstration (5 MB) My Silly (more like stupid) Measuring of the Detergent (4 MB) Loading the Clothes (4 MB) Washing (6 MB) First Spin (10 MB) Static Overflow Fill (like watching paint dry) (3 MB) Overflow Rinse (4 MB) Final Spin (10 MB) Overflow Rinse Comparison between 3 washers (6 MB) |

You could be a demoing all those lovely new machines & powder at Sears...LOl Love the vids Robert, thats some kool dial especially with the neons.... When washing is it just the motor you hear?? its sounds like a slurping pump in the background.... Had forgotten about the tips on the agi vanes until I kept seeing flashes etc... Cheers, Mike |

Great videos. You're right about that first spin time though - what a disappointment! They should have used a couple of the static overflow-rinse increments for more spin time, even a spray rinse would have been more effective. Perhaps that rinse cycle was a throwback (and not that far in 1956) to the days of soap in laundry and that it took a tremendous amount of water to get rid of the soap scum...especially with that poor water movement at the top of the tub during agitation. Thanks for the hard work sharing those videos with us, I know that takes a long time - we appreciate it! |

We have grown accustomed, in the last few videos, to hearing the perfect diction that comes out of your mouth, but to see you LIVE!!! My God! For all of us who have never had the pleasure of meeting you, it is truly the treat of the week, if not the month. It's almost as if you're right here in our living rooms--rough, wild, and stunning. "MY silly (more like stupid) Measuring" I don't think so. More like: Hilarious and Brilliant. How does it feel to know that the best thing on TV in America tonight is the Robert Show? Members have so much in common: we all love Samantha in addition to everything else. Who knew? Thanks so much for the towel load in the Hotpoint. Loved the "almost-rainbow "beach towel. Surprisingly fine turnover. At first, expected really poor performance from the size and style of the thriftivator; looks can indeed be deceiving. My mom told me that before I came to be, many washers oversudsed. Maybe the Hotpoint people engineered a very short first spin and the neutral overflow to flood the outer tub with so much water that a suds-lock, no matter how fierce, would never hold. Will we ever know the truth, Mulder, about the Thriftivator X-File? Thank God for Rob! You are the King, the patron saint, the Alpha Male, the work horse, the most generous, AND THE REAL POPE of this wonderful club, and everybody knows it! Thank You so much. Many of us would not have each other WITHOUT YOU. Good Hight and Sweet Dreams of Washing Machines. Lowly Assistant Rabbi of Buffalo. Michael Joseph Danieu |

Robert, This is real awsome. First the wonderdial works completly differently than what I thought. The 55 Hotpoint we had was a basic model with a plain green dial. I remember my mother always starting the washer at the same spot. And I still thought it was a wonder dial. Well maybe I was wrong. What was so simular is the way the water entered the tub flowing down. My mother used to add the clothes than start the washer and while it was filling she would add the soap. And she would actually turn the tub so everything got wet and soapy. The Adjation was simular but sounded a bit different. We had the black gooseneck. Ours also went right into spin without pausing. Ours didnt do as much overflowing as this machine. This brings back so many memories. Thanks so much for the great videos. Best Wishes Peter |

Oh yes, I was way impressed by the turnover, too. The stills didn't do it justice. I'm really surprised, because--man--if I take the fins off my "faux 1-18," the turnover is nonexistent. The nub-o-lation must do the trick :-D I love the way it doesn't skip a beat before going from agitation to spin. BTW, I thought the Samantha bit was GREAT! You did a really good job of it. You should consider doing more special effects in the future, like maybe pulling mostly dry clothes out of a Kenmore :-) *runs* |

Hi Everyone and thanks for all your kind words. Mickeyd that was so nice, but I better not quite my day job ;) Greg I can’t agree more, it’s a terrible cycle, they should have let the machine spin for at least two increments on the first spin (3 minutes). Jimmy, yes it does have an unbalance switch, its simply a wire that goes from the pump up to the timer, to push the timer dial in if the load gets unbalanced. They moved to the Coaxial design for the 1958 line. Mike, the sounds you hear are the motor, pump and you can sort of hear the clutch in the final spin. Ausin this wasn’t a full load, only ľ full that way we would get some turnover on the video, and no Big Red doesn’t quite fit in this machine, its too short. Hi Fred, sure I’ll be right over, its only 12:56 am, hope your still up! :) Pete you are correct this is a time fill machine. Rex, possibly someday I’ll make this into a full DVD, the red agitator sure is fun. |

Thanks Robert, very nice videos! And you're very good at demonstrating washers! I remember a demonstation lady coming over to our house to show my mother how to use her first automatic washer. I'm sure you would have done a better job than her! Some aspects of this machine are indeed a little disappointing, like the overflow and the short first spin. I love the sounds it makes though. Perhaps I missed it in the other thread, but does this machine have a lint filter? Louis |

Robert, I can only say thank you for the wonderful way you started my Saturday. These are great - Hotpoint was always sort of a 2nd best in my mind. Now I see what it must once have been - quality at a reasonable price point. We can't vote for you at the Oscar's...but I vote we change your name to 'Sam' for obvious reasons! |

Louis, this 56 had no lint filter. Hotpoint didn't add that feature till after the introduction of the coaxial models. Thw filter was Hotpoint's version of the Norge burpulator system. |

Louis, no filter on this machine. Like Les said Hotpoint's first lint filter was a reciculation system on the 1958 - early 60's TOL models and a underwater agitator cartridge filter for the MOL & BOL machines. Then when the Spiralator came out in the mid 60s they started using a Birpalator style filter. thanks for sharing, and when you're done at Freds, you can bring the Samantha magic over here please Turn my Kenmore tall tub into a KDS17! Heck Jeff, if I working some magic you might find a KD10 installed! |

Interesting ad, it mentions two spray rinses and calls the agitator an "Aquatator" not "Thriftivator." Hotpoint did use a passive lint filter on the long-neck agitator in my 64 model (co-axial tranny) and the Fountain Filter burp-up came out shortly after that. You can just see the filter under the detergent dispenser in this picture - a two-part sleeve then went down over the agitator shaft. |

That ad is interesting and yes it does talk about two spray rinses. The model in the ad is either a '54 or '55, I'm going to guess its a '55. According to the 1954 CU article that is posted here in our library, the Hotpoint came in dead last in their ratings of all Automatics. Its says the Hotpoint uses 13 gallons of hot water and 42 gallons of cold water for an entire cycle, this makes a grand total of 55 GALLONS OF WATER! I bet it did a 1.5 minute cold spray rinse in the first spin as well as in the final spin. Good thing they redesigned the machine to use only 42 gallons of water for '56 by removing the spray rinses, but they should have left the first spray rinse and cut out 1.5 minutes of static fill.

Robert do you know in the above AD if the 55 wonderdial worked the same as the 56 you did the demo with? On the 55 the dial seems somewhat different? Hi Pete, I think you're right, it looks like the dial on the '55 doesn't have that fancy wash time selector ring. Hi Terry I will take some night shots as well, but first here is the Hotpoint installed in its new home... |

Your so right Terry. It does look right at home there. I just love looking at your basement photos Robert. I do hope to be able to see all your machines in person some day. Looking forward to the night photos also. I brought home a Norge about the same year as yours the other day, along with a 1957,or 1958 Norge. They are not in the same condition of your 56 though. Mine look more like something that was brought up from the Titanic. >: It was all I could find that I wanted from the Indiana junkyard. Will post some photos of them at some point soon. |

Well Robert, I will take some photos to post this weekend. But rust me....errrr I mean TRUST me, they are NOT a pretty sight! I think the one is a 1954 model, and the other is a 1957 model. They are sooooooo gone. However I still hope to be able to make one good one out of the two. If not,I will have some spare parts for you. These have been sitting outside in a wooded junkyard for at least 40 years. I just had to try to save them. I have always loved your beautiful 1956 Norge, and hope to have one of my very own. |
