I used my 1954 ABC wringer today and a problem arouse. When I plugged it in the motor ran but when I put the machine in gear, it wouldn't go until I worked on the agitator for a bit trying to make it go. It finally did but there was smoke coming out from under the skirt for awhile until the agitator started to move and things went well. I was just finishing wringing out some clothes, backed the wringer in the opposite direction to correct a sock from being caught. The wringer wouldn't respond nor would the agitator. The transmission seems to be ok, no loud, strange sounds that shouldn't be there.
Any ideas that you can think of that could be causing the problem would be appreciated. Thanks, Gary

I knew!
If it was a Maytag Wringer I'd tell you to check the lever connection that's under the skirt. On a Matag, there's a small pin that holds it on.
Maybe it's the same with a ABC? some fastening connection?
Someone will come along that knows.
Have you looked for a service manual here? I'm sure Robert has posted one.

Hi Gary

I'm kind of surprised too with the lack of responses.
What's confusing about your problem is that both the wringer and the agitator are not engaging. If the agitator doesn't engage.. it makes sense that there is a problem with whatever mechanism ABC used to engage/disengage it with.
If it was just the wringer, I'd think the same thing. But both??
Hope you got it worked out. Let me know
