Well, after all the Gleaming Porcelain, Spray Arm Cadence, and Belt Drive Envy this past Sunday,  I decided to go after the relative to jetcone's Jenn Air.

If this machine was used twice, I'd be surprised.  It is truly Brand New

Cool Eddie!!  I wonder if Temp Control on yields a thermostatic hold in main wash at some point or if it simply keeps the heating element on during  all water circulation periods.  The former mentioned sequence was a latter iteration to Maytag's RRs.  If it does do a delay heat during main wash, then the "on" indicator light will stop glowing during the heating delay. I'm so excited for ya I'm all tingly!!!

Oh Bob...

Thanks soooo much.  I remember these are one of your favorites. I was so excited driving to get it and the guy couldn't have been nicer.(A nice mix of Cub/Otter!!!)

It was in his parent's house and they hardly used it at all. I can't wait until the Holidays to put him through the paces.  Just lovin' all those Spray Arms and Jets.

And the Forced Air Dry is the topper.

Once he's installed, I'll let you know what's going on with the Temp Boost.

I had a Maytag portable dishwasher, a WC302 back in the 80's that did an awesome job washing, but the one thing I wish it had was the water heating feature that it sorely lacked. Those rack in the JennAir look plenty flexible, I especially like the folding tines in the upper rack. One thing I did notice is that the center nozzle jets are completely different where mine had 4 slots..one long from the very tip to about maybe about 3 inches down and three shorter jets each targeting different areas of the upper rack underside.
These dishwashers hold a ton of dishes and I was amazed at how much they can hold. But that said, they were lacking in what they could hold vertically in the upper rack when using baking sheets and the like. If they were a tad taller, the outer edges worked ok as long as the top arm could move. I used to angle deep pots facing the middle nozzle in the upper rack to make sure they got a good scrubbing. Rarely did a dish emerge dirty from this dishwasher.

Somebodies having F~U~N !

And it's got fan forced drying, too. I don't know if any machines have that anymore.

And you even have the fold-down tines in the upper rack! Very handy when washing big stuff. You guys are going to love these machines. If I ever find another one it'll become my daily driver. The Kenmore washes very well but the racks/baskets drive me nuts and even the economy cycle is way too long.

Hi Ken.

It's a shame they don't make these anymore. The build quality is very sturdy.

I am very anxious to get mine installed.  Hope you are well.

Hi Mike.

Thanks. Yes , it's a great machine.

Thanks Phil.

Hope to see you soon.

Is there any difference between a Jenn Air and a Maytag?

Not really any difference of consequences.  Maybe slightly different racks with more collapsible tines in the comparable JennAir product. I vague remember seeing an all pushbutton JennAir have a delayed wash timer on it the comparable Maytag didn't.

Loyalty... where did it go?

Boy, Eddie, how fast you decided to put the 20 out to pasture! (at least for a while)
Do you think the RR will out-wash it? I think it may do it per the Maytag advertising of the time about all those needle jets they had vs. KA but I guess your really dirty casseroles and pans have to be relegated to the lower rack to really take advantage of their washing action. Not as much shooting up from the tower to clean the innards of those pans and casseroles.

Admittedly, I would welcome a shot at using one of them as well but have never been disappointed, really by any KA I have had.

Just a reminder.. LisaMarie is still looking for a KDS17 replacement so that 20 has a home if you decide it is time for it to go on a permanent basis.

Good luck with the new kid on the block and keep us posted!

Hi Steve.

I was waiting to hear from you on this. LOL

I'm making a fast trip this week to pick up another gem. You'll see it when I get it. This fall will end up being quite the "harvest".

I'll let you know the fate of the 20 as I have some thinking to do about who is next. We're way over due for a phone call.  We'll see if we can figure some thing out for LisaMarie.

Got a huge BobLoad in the 20 tonight. I'm going to let it dry over night to get the extra Challenge in.

I'll try you tomorrow.

New Jenn-Air Reverse Rack DW [ Maytag ]

combo52's profile picture

Congratulations Eddie on your new DW find, as we get older there is nothing more fun than finding a nearly new vintage appliance that does not need a huge restoration.

Hope you have fun using it for awhile, but I am with Steve I wouldn't move that KDS-20 too far away. While if loaded properly with the right kind of dishes the MT-JA RR DWs can be very good performing machines it is just that the rack design are just to limiting in loading large and odd items and get everything clean with the lack of an upper rack wash arm [ under the rack where it belongs ].

It is funny, about two months ago I posted that we had a TOL electronic 1990 MT RR DW that was in excellent condition that one of our customers in Georgetown had had since new. She was not anxious to get rid of it but knew that the time was coming as it had been repaired many times. We installed a new MT DW and after she had had it about two weeks she had me back to make a minor adjustment in the leveling of the new machine.

I was almost reluctant to ask her how she liked the new MT DW, but she told me anyway, first of all she could not believe how many more dishes the new one held, she said she filled the old every day and it was now taking a day and a half or even two days to fill the new one. She also said the new DW dried much better [ both DWs were used on heat dry ] she said cleaning was also great.

While no one likes unusual vintage appliance designs more than I do, the fact of the matter was MT struggled to sell DWs because of the unusual design of their DWs, and I have had many customers that liked their RR DWs, but it seems from our experience many more did not, sadly sometimes it just doesn't pay to be different in this world.

Eddy hope you enjoy your new toy, and be sure to keep your belt lubed, LOL.

The old MT RR DW has gone to Mark in NC to be part of his extensive DW collection.

My only complaint about the KDS-20 is the lack of the Overhead Constant Rinse.

I know it was a poor design and was engineered too low from the top of the tank so people broke them off.  But when you have a very heavy soiled load, there will always be "DW dust" or Yibbles on anything concave in the Upper Rack.

I wish there was a way or a kit to add a Constant Rinse to the 19 and up series.

When you BobLoad the Crap out of any 19+ series there is always the tell tale sign of the lack of an upper spray.

Yibbles or Shifafa.  My KDS 18 Never Never Never had deposits on concave items on the upper rack.

Of course if you leave corners open and space in between items in the Upper Rack there is a slim chance and certainly hit or miss on the Yibble Factor.

None the less I will give a Detailed Report on how I like the RR when I install it. Too much going on this week to swap out.

I can get pretty creative when loading a machine. We'll see.

The woes of no constant rinse!

Eddie, doesn't the water manifold in your 20 have the slit in it to spray water out over the dishes? I know I showed it you when you were here. It would be interesting to see if those members that have the 21 and up series suffer yibble syndrome. The better filtration system should have eliminated most of that problem.

Oh, My Dear Darlin' Baby Jesus !!!

No. you never showed me that( and it was way too early in the day for Cocktail Time) and Yes, it's there.  I never noticed it and then again... now that I know it's there, it certainly is not effective.

There is something about the "Spritzer" being on the Center of the Chamber that I found more effective then that "Slit".

After all... wasn't it Hobart that stated the theory "Either the Water has to move or the Dishes." ???  Well, engineering must have been on the last hour of design on a Friday or smoked some really good Kush when they came up with a "Slit" to replace the Constant Spritzer. . LOL.  Yeah, you can't break that but I have seen similar gimmicks like in a Bosch if I'm not mistaken.

Even my KenWhirl with the Crappy Top Rack that I can't adjust to get Larger things like mixing Bowls and other Larger Vessels has a Dribbler on the top that manages to get most off. Not all... like the Original Constant on the 17 and 18 series KitchenAids that were Hobart Built.

I had used a RR a few times and liked it.  I couldn't pass on a machine like the Jenn with practically no use.  So it was there and I bought it.  I know Ken is surveilling my house. LOL.

KD-18 Style Constant Rinse

combo52's profile picture

You can add it to your KDS-20 by drilling a few holes and using KD-18 parts, I do agree Eddie that the Slit in the feed tube was a nice thought but it sure did not work as well as a moving arm in the center.

I used my KDSS-20 for almost 10 years in my kitchen, and I always wanted to take a main wash pump from something like an Asko or Bosch DW and plumb it into the water feed line under the DW going to the top rack, I feel that if there was a lot more water pressure you would be able to wash most of the little stuff off from below.

The water feed line in the KD-18 through KD-23 was just to convoluted to get enough water to the top arm IMEO, on my 1987 WP DW with the center feed tube I almost never have anything on top of coffee mugs and it has no top wash system at all.

Well Now...

Looks like Whirlpool is looking back to the Maytag Roots.

Don't these Needle Spray Jets look a little familiar... And in the first pic some are clogged already

Filter System doesn't look like a food chopper.

And that Coarse Filter in the Door certainly makes easy access... Oh wait, that's a Silverware Basket.

LOL !!!

The Marler Back Corner Wash Tower Test

This Blender Carafe was a tad bit crusty, so in the back far corner of the top rack it went. I strategically placed the carafe cover blocking the Lower Wash Arm. So, here we go.

Epic Find! :)

chetlaham's profile picture
Those are among some of my favorite Dishwashers. I perosnally have a great admiration for the reverse rack system. Id take the modern version in a hearbeat if it were avaliable. Its easier to load and unload with an added advantage of no dripping down when unloading the top rack first. In fact the way I cook and use dishes I often find my bowls tend to be dirtier then my plates, so having those items in the bottom rack is great without taking up space for dishes like most other machines.
