I just saw that WP is closing all the Maytag laundry facilities. I really hate to see Newton go. Herrin & Searcy will be done by the end of this year & Newton sometime in 2007. sad.

Here's an article.

Sad as it is (for laundry production)... It does bring a slight twinkle to my eye--what is happening to the corporate end of it-- what happened to the poor folks at Hoover, in North Canton, is coming around full turn and happening to those who pulled the strings in Newton.

It happened in Dayton, OH 26 years ago, it's happening in Newton, IA now and I suspect it will also happen in Benton Harbor, MI soon enough :(

Mourning

In 1979, we were remodeling a kitchen and I went to buy new Frigidaire appliances. Nothing was said, but as I looked at the ranges, refrigerators and washers, I could easily see the blacksplash, burners and agitators were WWC.
I felt the room spin. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It truly was like the worst Twilight Zone scenario I could imagine.
I found a GM double oven range in that store and paid to have a GM Frigidaire S/S shipped in from another state. There were no GM dishwashers to be had.
Because of that, I went to Dykstra's, where I purchased my TOL Maytag washer and dryer 2 years previously and bought my first of five belt driven Maytag dishwashers.
It is painful to watch the death of greatness because I share a country with consumers who settle for bloated nothingness.
Do I smell lilies and hear the strains of organ music?

Robert, do you mean that WP will close down its corporate headquarters?

Hi Tom, Whirlpool wont, but it could be bought out by some foreign company in the future and they will do the closing.

Oy, Herrin is only a few miles from here. It's not a big town and Maytag is their major employer. Actually, Maytag is one of the major employers in the region. Well, at least the writing is on the wall and people have some time to make plans.

It's sad, the Herrin factory has been making washers since since the mid 40s when someone from Herrin convinced Borg-Warner to build a Norge factory there. Some people still call it the Norge plant.

My heart really goes out to those people living in Newton as it did when this happened to North Canton. It is very sad to think of this era in laundry history ending. It almost seems like there should be a service or something. Terry

As I wrote in the Super forum, I'm surprised that it took Whirltag this long to do it.
