I have a 1989 Speed Queen Rayathon built where the pump has locked up. Two belt machine where the pump is on the right. How do i remove it? If the pump can be freed up can i still use it or does it have to be replaced?

No idea.

I don't know how to get into it, but I do work in the appliance parts business and the SQ perforated tub belt-driven pumps are commonly available both in drain and drain + recirculating versions.

Does it Look Like This??

Pumps in the late model machines cannot be rebuilt. They must be replaced if leaking or defective.

TWO-BELT MACHINES

Belt driven pumps are replaced by simply removing the pump mounts.

Tension is kept on the pump belt by adjustment. Tension is kept on the transmission belt by an idler pulley. There is a kit available from your parts dealer with a new belt and idler and instructions on how to adjust the belt.

amazing, people come here asking for help, and this is the welcome wagon their dealt....again, why some people should not reproduce!

there should be three 5/16" screws holding that pump to the base, this is also how you adjust tension...

you can try and use some oil and loosen it up, but this most likely will be a temporary fix, eventually it will lock up again, but may buy some tie until you locate a new one.....

first figure out if you have a two port, or four port pump for replacement.....

heres a link for a 4 port

and a link for the 2 port.......

this should be mounted to a platform by 4 screws, and then the platform is mounted to the base.....

post a pic when you open this up, and WE, at least some of us, can help further....

that pic refreshes me memory of one of these...

yeah, on the platform theres two screws on the front, and one on the back to remove that, and of course there are four screws that hold the pump to it.....

I had a model like this, what bugged me was the tub to pump hose for the filter allowed water to enter the pump during spin, even though it was spinning backwards, it still pumped water over the load...and sometimes slowed down the spin, and caused premature wear on the main belt...

I found it best to clamp off either hose for the filtering....granted it did not allow the filter ring to work.......

but note, on the last of the Raytheon machines, they noticed this issue, and did away with the four port pump....and went with a two port pump only.....

if they only pulled water from the side of the outter tub, there would not have been an issue....I was trying to think of how to add a port on the side, and cap off the bottom one...

I believe you can find belts at an auto parts store....for the pump only....

the drive belt must be a slip/clutch type.....

I too added a bit more tension to the drive belt as well....

in the mean time, shop around for the best prices....and free shipping if possible....

keep us posted....

Maytag Mike>>

Hey Man,

Yogitunes gave you the best link for a 4 port...and, well, I had a speed queen come in over the weekend...needs a pump.

I waited till today, but I bought the above one this AM, man accepted 27.00 dollars.

There are more on EPray, but they are in the 80-90 dollar range.

Good Luck,

LaVidaBoem

I have got a pump on order and I need to get a belt. I bought the pump from a fellow club member for $30. Hope to have the machine up and running by New Years. Right now I'm running my 1989 Magic Chef Norge built!!. Just runs like a charm. I would like to take this time to thank Yogitunes and La VidaBoem for all their help will touch base when the machine is up and running. Thanks, Mike

Hey, Sounds Great,...

I really was worried you would be pissed at me for getting that pump!

Really we are glad to help, gives one a good feeling to pass it on...

Good Luck

Post Script: I had a Magic chef set with the blurp, filter and all, sold the washer some 15 years ago...Still churning along in a rental.

Still have the dryer...is a good choice for the days when I run several.

My comment may have seemed rude, but if you had worked on as many of those as I have you would have the same opinion of them. Speed Queen went downhill from the beginning of the 70's and those models were some of the worst and problematic machines they ever made. I junked out many of them that had pump problems, tub seal failures along with bearings ruined and transmission problems. They were just not very durable machines at all. The machines Speed Queen made through the 60's were incredible work horses. They still made the commercial coin op machines like those until the late 70's, but not home use machines. They changed the home use machines at the beginning of the 70's and they were very problematic machines and got worse when they made the perforated tub machines in the 80's. That is why I would never trust a Speed Queen machine now. The design is too much like what they built in the 80's. In fact, the transmission looks to be the same as it was then along with much of the rest of it. I think that the recent post on here about a later model machine and the outer tub rusting around the bearing is proof of at least part of what I am talking about. Many of those machines I junked out had inter tubs that had rusted out around the tub seal to a point that they could not be repaired. Who wants to pay for shipping back and forth along with the parts to repair something that will only have some later issue that needs repair too?

That may be, but if someone came on here asking for help on a certain machine they just purchased, or maybe have owned a while, my first response would not have been POS.

I don't care for Frigidaire 1-18's, had my fill of working on them under warranty back in the 70's. But I wouldn't try to tell someone that their recent purchase or a machine they needed help on was a POS, or that they are all junk.

May have seemed rude?

yogitunes's profile picture
forget him, there's a reason why the block feature was created....willing to bet he didn't win any awards for customer service!....

the question was how to get at the pump, and can it be worked on or replaced....NOT, what do you think of this machine.....

I have had several of the NorgeTags/Atlantis versions come through, pumps seemed to be the weak point for the ones I found, but still a decent machine, very large capacity, dual drive tranny with the long slow stroke was a nice touch....and years later, these machines are still running strong....

for the pump belt, those are standard V-belts you can find at most automotive stores, for around 5.00.....measure first, or take the old one with you, don't quote me exactly, but I think that is a 22 inch belt....

also check places that service lawn mowers and such, I find they have just about any size belt ever created....

check with Dave/volvoguy....they may have them in stock.....

Yogitunes, Thanks, i went out today to try to find a belt they all said nla. Wanted to get feedback from you guys, again thanks for the help we'll have her up and running in no time. Mike

the only thing with the application of a cogged belt is for tight turns around the pulleys....

I have found both, and used both of several machines, others may chime in, but don't see a big deal in either one being used.....

can you post your model number or the size of the belt and I will help you with locating one.....I may even have one here....

we'll figure it out

check this link out......but first, go in and "ask them a question"....they will cross reference to let you know if this will fit your machine exactly before you purchase....

you will be surprised how many belts or pumps are the same, yet have several part numbers....

heres a pic of the set I had.....

Mike, I am sorry I didn't think of this sooner but I have a good selection of Speed Queen parts that I bought as a lot last summer.  I don't have an inventory, but there are belts, knobs, a timer or two and at least one pump.  If you ever need anything else (and aren't in a hurry...LOL) let me know and I'll do some digging.

Pump & Belt.

volvoguy87's profile picture
A SQ 4-port pump and a pump belt are still commonly stocked items in many appliance parts stores. My store even has them in stock.

Pump: 31968, $51.13 retail.
Pump Belt: 27155, $7.95 retail.

You should be able to find them locally with relative ease. If not, feel free to send me a message via AW.org and I can see what I can do regarding better pricing and shipping. My store can ship them out as soon as Monday afternoon.

Should be a cogged belt because both pullyes are very small it will work better in the long run.

i have received a speed queen pump from a club member, brand new in the factory package, he said he has had it for some time. opened up the pkg, I turned the pulley it turns but seems a little tight. is this normal? going to get a pump belt Monday, any thoughts would help. Thanks Mike

well, as with any Speed Queen machine, never run it dry.....will most likely work better once in the machine and lubricated from the water....

normally I would say to add about a bucket of water to the drain hose before you start, but this isn't a solid tub, so starting on a regular fill should work out fine...

if it were me, I would probably pour in a bucket of really hot water first, then start the machine....

Speed Queen Belt driven pump

combo52's profile picture
These pumps are always a little stiff this is one reason why it is so important to have a cogbelt driving it and the belt needs to be reasonably tight unlike a Maytag Washer where the belt for the pump is running very loose.

would it be ok to use a smooth belt in the mean time untill I get a cog belt.

Post# 858427 , Reply# 29   12/26/2015 at 12:30 (3,041 days old) by LaVidaBoem ()
Yes, it will work,..

It may require a little more tension, but don't overdo it...the pump bearings are not that strong.

Take some medium grit sandpaper (150-180), and polish the pulley "vees" on each side of motor and pump, trying to leave a good cross hatch pattern...(XXXX).

Will give the best surface for break-in.

Good Luck,

LaVidaBoem

wonders never cease, I finally found a belt for my speed queen, I switched out the pump when you look into the old pump it looks like white cement, pully wouldn't turn it, put the new pump in and put the new belt on she runs like a charm have missed using, I was using my Norge built magic chef in the meantime love that machine too. I wish i had a laundry room where I could have more than 1 running. i have been retired 7 months now and people i know who are looking for advice on what washing machine to buy I tell them Speed Queen, the librarian at my local library knew I sold appliances so she had ask me what washer to buy and I told her a speed queen. long story short she did her research and when i was there she said that she bought a speed queen, absolutely loves it.

Need a transmission for my Speed Queen wringer washer

I have been trying to find a transmission for my Speed Queen wringer washer model #USM890. I'm not sure where to look. I have even tried ebay but to no luck yet. Any advice, suggestions, or possible places I may be able to get one would be greatly appreciated. I live in Alaska and this machine is desperately needed by an older woman who does not have a whole lot of money.

Have you tried Lehman's?  Their website lists reviews from people who've bought parts for their old SQ wringers.  The link below shows a new Saudi Arabian wringer, but read below the description and you will see what I'm talking about.  May be worth a call.
