Why in the world would anyone name a refrigerator 'Smeg'????  I found this ad on the Atlanta CL.  It's a cute refrigerator, retro color, but I looked it up online and this little refrigerator is NOT self-defrosting and DOES cost $2000.

Why???

Is anyone familiar with this product line?

BTW, I'm not interested in buying.....

I remember these from when I lived in Europe--cannot recall in which country they were manufactured--but in the early 2000s, these were becoming the "thing" to have in the US for people wanting the retro 50s look. They had some 2-door top freezer models here which looked a lot like the mid-50s GE's…and in a whole lot of colors, which is probably what the limited appeal was at the time for this maker Stateside. Costly things :/

Yeah, SMEG sounds like something else :/ Their website clarifies:

Founded in 1948, SMEG ("Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla," translated as "Metal Enamelling Plant from Guastalla Emilia") is an Italian home appliance manufacturer based in the town of Guastalla, in the Region of Emilia Romagna in Northern Italy, 30 kilometers north of the city of Reggio Emilia. Beginning with the opening of its first subsidiary, in France, in 1988, SMEG now has 17 subsidiaries worldwide (in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Mozambique, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States), overseas offices in Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia, and an extensive sales network.

for that clarification; I didn't think they were naming their company after semen. Their dishwashers look interesting.

SMEG

And the Hebrew word for "what" is "MA."
