Does anyone have a comparison sheet or scanned promotional for Maytag washers? I have an A412 from my grandmother that is a tank, but I remember my mother having an A408 or A608 from the early 1980s. (I don't know which since it was long ago.) Of the three which had the larger tub? Were any considered top of the line or whatever line they were in?

This is my first posting. Thanks for the information.

The A412 is the most basic of the large capacity models, the others being the A512/A612/A712

A608

So would the A608 be considered a TOL washer, just manufactured years earlier, or were they considered higher quality overall as compared to the A412?

I am trying to get a handle on the models and their quality if I ever come across one in store. If the choice was between an A712 and an a608 or similar model, all other internals being equal, which would be the better one to go with?

MT Washer Comparison

All MT washers were built to the same quality level, there are differences in features that are very easy to see.

Capacity

All the models you list are the same capacity. The A412 and A408 are both equipped with a 1-speed motor. The A608 was one step up, and had a 2-speed motor, which allowed a slower speed for a better gentle cycle.

Maytag quality, etc.

My 1988 Maytag extra capacity had the huge Whirlpool style transmission mounted on the bottom of the tub, and spun with it.
My 1995 dependable care Fabric-matic had the round shaped gearbox.

Whirlpool Style transmission?

The transmission in a 1988 MT was nothing like any WP washer transmission they ever used.

transmission,

I only took the front panel off once.
Yes, after seeing the posted schematics, I can tell it is different from the Whirlpool, but still has a large round end, and a smaller opposite end.
Basically both had a pinion, and a sun gear, and a rake to stroke the agitator shaft. I bet the stroke was closely similar.
Maytag may have used a different ratio, and not the connecting rod.
