Woah, I don't think I've ever seen one of those before. Instead of just a little shelf for the reach in door, you get several racks. I had no idea they made reach in door units that early. I thought GE was the first in the 80s.

These were a mid 80s thing. They came in the rare dove grey and toast color. Whirlpool was first with them, though GE certainly kept their version much longer.

I remember in 1987, This Old house did a farmhouse remodel called the Weatherbee Farm in Newton Mass., just off route 1, and the new owners of the property had this very frig in grey.

Considering Purchasing It . . .

. . . It is not too far, and would match the other appliances I am collecting for a future kitchen/laundry rmodel.

It has been out in his " man-cave " for some years, and never had the water or ice maker hooked up since in his posession. It needs one glass shelf.

Can the ice maker be repaired easily, or will parts be impossible to find? My wife won't have a fridge without these features.

Is it a good quality machine worth keeping alive, or best left alone?

Thanks for any and all opinions.

Steve

I would think if it's cooling properly, it should be reliable. I think as mentioned above this is from the 80s, so it would likely be more efficient than some of the older ones. I would think the ice maker could be replaced with a new one, unless it uses some kind for dispenser. But I think it's just a standard ice maker and you could put in a new replacement if necessary.

Though these often had a lot of plastic tubing that can get brittle with age and crack.

"Can the ice maker be repaired "
Who or where did it say there is a problem with it?

The fact that it was not connected doesn't mean it's broken. In fact, it means it's been preserved, left unused.

It's a good purchase. Whirlpool made frigs have had a good reputation, and they are quieter than most.

Icemaker . . .

" Who or where did it say there is a problem with it? "

Well, certainly not me, and not in his ad. I spoke with him by telephone. The icemaker , as well as the water-in door are unknown quantities. If, however, they happen not to function, and cannot be repaired except at great cost/trouble, then " She Who Must Be Obeyed " might kick my ass, so I would pass on it.

Cheers,
Steve

Well, I guess your balls are going to be in a sling, if you can't find a way to test this frig's ice-maker and dispenser system, BEFORE buying it.

And frankly, I don't envy you. (LOL)

But frankly, you hetero's take risks with your daily life, that astound me, so....

I wish I still lived in Lake County, Ca., I would consider buying this gem..... or picking it up after Vampira throws your ass, and the frig to the curb, but......

re: Weatherbee Farm

Newton, MA is not close to Rt.1 at all :)

Weatherbee Farm is in Westwood, MA.

Ironically, I've lived in both towns for long stretches.

Really ....

delaneymeegan's profile picture

When I lived in Mass., from 2005 to 2007, I bought my car at Boch Honda on the "automile" on Rt. 1.

Technically, Weatherbee Farm is in Westwood, less than 2 miles from the dealership.... in Norwood, not Newton, as I mis-typed the wrong town beginning with an "N".

I remember driving passed the house and pondering how different it is in person, vs. the way it was presented on the program nearly 20 years ago, at that time.

Not to belabor my qualifications too much, but...

The PBS description of the show with dates.

The Aerial view of said house in question with Streets in the subdivision behind that were, no doubt, developed on former farmland, owned by the Weatherbee family. Yes, this property had been in the family up until it was sold to the new owners who bought it in the mid 80s.

Short of coming up with a picture of Bob Vila as he's viewing the newly built and installed kitchen WITH the refrigerator similar to the Whirlpool model as started this post, I think I've proved just how appliance crazed I am.

If anyone EVER questions my Appliance geek qualifications, be sure to show them this post.

Now, I'm going to go see if I can find video of one of the final episodes as described above.

Oh, and, as a special bonus. The Whirlpool frig was the NEW frig, installed in the new kitchen. When we first view this house, the new owners actually have a GE version with the small fold down snack door.   I think it was almond.
