The Normal one my grandma seemed to always run hers on (I don't think she'd ever used Gentle) it made a pleasant sound and a portion of the cabinet seemed to vibrate in a diagonal pattern...
One time we were in the kitchen over her laundry area and the washer made a banging noise from an unbalanced load so we rushed over to it while she shifted the load causing the series of knocks... But I think the agitation makes a soothing 'Mmmmhhhhrrrr' sound as well... -- Dave |

I remember when it was on the spin cycle on normal. The metallic sound of the suspension rhythm would slow down as it got up to speed. The clanking would happen every few seconds. |

the sheet metal rattle noise. You could hear it all over the house, especially with heavy fabrics such as towels and jeans. |

More on my grandma's General Electric:
Yes, the sheet metal-rattle, seemed to be a diagonal thump-thump visably seen during the spin, we were in the kitchen over it once when it banged and clunked during an unbalanced load.... The agitation made a "Maaaalllll" sound, and disappointing to learn a left-opening lid model which hers as was some K Mart knock-off while the many Genuine GE's that Inwould see, and later Hotpoints had their lids open to the rear... Somehow I could briefly change the speed from Normal to Gentle, back to Normal despite at that time learning it was bad to do, without that one time even at the machine in its final almost-15-years doing any harm... (it got replaced by a WCI-built Frigidaire due to pump issues, it had a couple or so before, while otherwise being a great machine) -- Dave |

when the machine did a spray rinse at full speed. You could hear the suspension clanking, metal cabinet thundering and cold water spraying all at once. This is especially with a full load most definitely with jeans. |

Always liked the sound of the FilterFlo water going into the pan and the hum of the agitation. My Mom had one, best washer we ever owned, as did my favorite aunt. Barry |
