got a question. I have a whirlpool direct drive washer that was made in 1998. when it goes into drain after the wash it wants to spin drain. but when it goes into drain after the rinse it neutral drains. what is causing this?

The neutral pak is showing it's age

I have seen this many times. The washer won't ND until the tranny warms up. I have never seen one of these very robust machines ruined by this condition. Worst case sceneario you replace the neutral pack and clutch.

had one that did this,96 model & its still running. (sold it) I found this is a plus because it spun out the soap. was never a fan of whirlpools neutral drains anyway. also on these if you open the lid when they are starting to drain & close it they will spin the water out no matter what

Yeah I knew that. But lid switch has been by passed. But since I use softner with the machine spinning during drain it releases the softner early

But it neutral drains in the rinse. I'd think the trans should be warmed up after agitation

the spin drain is not a major problem:

Unless you have very dirty loads or have to get maximum rinsing. In which case the drawdown of wash water through the bottom of the tub and side holes will make a huge difference. Dirt settles out during the wash and lighter soils float. During a ND the heavy soils are pumped out the bottom of the drum while light soils settle on only the top layer of clothes. The light soils are spun off when the spin is engaged. This instead of all soils being pumped back through the load by a spinning tub full of water.

My mother has a WP DD machine that's at least 25 yrs old. Although it is showing it's age it is still chugging along strong as ever. Once in a while I can tell when the machine isn't neutral draining but otherwise the machine has never been affected.

I attribute this to the age of her machine and considering that it hasn't affected any other operation of the machine it has just been left alone. My mother, I think isn't even aware of the situation but my ears have picked up on it when I happen to be there when the machine is running.

You will lose a little bit of fabric softener when the machine first starts to spin anyway,
but provided you use the correct dosing you won't experience any problem and there will be enough softener dropped into the basket when it stops spinning.

......washer does the "spin drain" thing - usually with lighter loads OR if the lid opened during drain and then closed again. I find that this "spin drain" sometimes dislodges lint and "debris" from somewhere in the machine and deposits it on the clothes or around the top of the tub making a huge mess.

This machine has never had any repairs and is still on it's original drive coupler so I can't complain!

There's a pause in the timer between neutral drain and spin which stops and restarts the motor for neutral-drain shifting ... so assuming the cause of spin-drain is not related to a timer malfunction (i.e. no pauses) the softener will be dispensed and lost when spin(/drain) stops and spin(/spin) restarts.

Thanks Dadoes for pointing that out. I didn't take that into consideration about the cycle progressing thru it's different parts.

On that note, I stand corrected and agree with you.
