Yes, one thought so as well

Problem is being far up on the west coast. *LOL*

With Jackie out of the picture (IIRC) one shudders to think what C&F or even U-Ship these days would charge to move the thing to Mid-West or even East Coast.

Am always amazed how well many porcelain on enamel washing machine tubs held up so well over the years. See a few bits of rust in pictures but cannot be sure they are chips in the surface.

"Note: its not really going to end as a auction, I just listed it that way for it to get noticed!"

Translation: I'm going to end the auction before the scheduled end date. There's no way in hell I'm going to let this one go for anywhere near ten bucks!

Oh I don't know.

Seller seems so far a reasonable fellow. He is being straight forward about a process we *all* know happens and it isn't just on the seller's end. That is persons will contact an eBay seller and offer all sorts to get them to end auction early.

Given the current track record of vintage laundry appliances being "won" on eBay then coming back a week or so later I can't say I would blame them.

Persons bid and win things only to find out cost of shipping was more than they realized and or they aren't willing to travel/make arrangements themselves to collect.

Reasonable

I contacted seller. He asked what my offer was. He said he had an offer of $250.00. He said the lint trap alone sells for $60.00. He obviously wants all he can get, referenced the club, and that some guys have 20 to 30 of these things. I contacted him because he is only 30min from me. I have no interest in the machine. I can pick it up for anyone who might need help from afar.

I would be seriously interested.....

revvinkevin's profile picture

... as I really liked the 1-18 I gave to Nate (Roto204) as a house warming gift, and it would be fun to have one with a window.

PLUS... I'd be OK with the 12+ hour drive (each way) to go get it, with Westy in the passenger seat.

However.... due to that 24+ hour road trip, I'm definitely NOT interested for $250.   $50 to $100-max, maybe.

(but then I have to remember I'm not collecting anymore, LOL)

Offer

I offered $60.00. Great minds think alike!

Post# 872516 , Reply# 10   3/14/2016 at 16:39 (2,958 days old) by Travis ()

I have long since learned that it's not the sellers responsibility to make something affordable enough to justify the shipping or drive.

For $60, it will end up in the scrap pile.

So Travis, are you saying... if you were selling this machine and you only got a $60 offer for it, you'd send it to the crusher rather than sell it???

*LOL*

Not taking any sides but.... If you "Google" Vintage - Frigidaire - Washer, the first several hits are all from this forum and or videos of members machines on Youtube. Can't fault a guy for looking around and doing some research on his appliance.

In the end the market will determine if the item sells and at what price.

That offer of $250 cash in hand is worth nearly $300 compared to selling on fleaPay as seller will avoid that company's fees. He'll also avoid the same ransom from PayPal when trying to get his money.

Post# 872534 , Reply# 13   3/14/2016 at 18:24 (2,958 days old) by Travis ()

Kevin,

I am saying that if you asked me to take pictures of, list an item on the hopes that I would make 90% of $60, I might let it go.  Maybe not me personally, I like old stuff, but normal folks might take it to the curb.

If you're willing to drive 12 hours each way to get the thing, then at least offer him $100.

This all being said, the seller should have listed the washer with the minimum price he would accept.  The $10 teaser is a bunch of crap.

Am not sure the entire thing isn't illegal under eBay rules. I mean we all know eBay sellers do deals under the table all the time, but this fella is stating it out front.

Keep in mind even if something is listed for one USD and someone wins the auction, eBay cannot force seller to hand over the merchandise for that price. Yes, they can take negative action such as giving someone the boot and or negative feedback, but that won't help a grieved winning bidder. EBay's TOS basically comes out and says they cannot force a seller to complete a transaction. If one has paid money one may get it back, but that is another matter.

Seller needs to stop messing with his auction. Let it ride instead of cancelling, relisting, etc...

Second a great many "good" machines are sitting on eBay with no bids. That avocado Maytag set comes to mind.

Am guessing even with today's historical low gas prices transportation/shipping is still to dear or those who live out of area.

Would be interesting to see if someone bids and wins this washer for < $250 seller claims he has an offer if he will let it go at that price.

That's a strange strategy from the seller. He should list it at the price he accepts to sell it or at least put a reserve on the auction! I guess it's against eBay rules too...

He finally has it listed properly, a BIN or best offer!

Now, go ahead and offer $60 if you wish.

OK I'm thoroughly confused by the way it's listed now.

He describes it as "The washer washes, rinses and spins...." but also the condition is listed as "For parts or not working".   I was going to try and ask the seller to explain the condition, but it's not possible to contact him through ebay.

If it's not working and is only for parts.... again... the price.   (and YES I know I can make an offer if I want)

Post# 873220 , Reply# 27   3/18/2016 at 19:28 (2,954 days old) by Travis ()

Kevin,

You can still ask the seller question just click on his seller ID and then ask the seller a question. He probably listed it as parts or repair because he doesn't want to deal with someone saying that it doesn't work properly because of how PayPal and eBay work in regards to getting a refund in case the buyer is illogical.

In the body of the listing, just click on the 'ask a question' to contact the seller.

Gary & Travis, thank you for your suggestions on how to contact the seller, I appreciate it.

However, I'd like to suggest you give it a try and see how far you get.

I did try contacting the seller both ways prior to your suggesting it and got no where, only the following message:

"We're sorry we couldn't find an answer for you.   Unfortunately, this seller is not able to respond to your question.

We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing."

Listings on eBay with odd purchasing requirements; eBay and PayPal are again separate companies. Things are now moving back to how they were before eBay got their mitts on PP and forced all sales to be paid for through that system; sellers are now free to insist on other methods of payment IIRC. This includes cash or whatever upon collection.

Contacting a member

You can always contact a member by clicking on the seller id.  On the next page, click contact.  It will then ask you for the item number, or you can select not about an item.

Thank You Launderess

Just wanted to thank you for listing this machine if it weren't for you I wouldn't have seen it.I was able to contact the seller and he said the machine works well and does not leak so I gave him the $300 he was looking for. This is the 1-18 I have been looking for a long time and they are rare especially working. Now I have to figure out how to get it home as my regular shipping company rolled over on me.

I live to help others! *LOL*

I'd put up something on U-Ship and see what sort of action comes in. Sometimes it may take a few weeks to get a serious (and reasonable) shipper with that system, but it is a viable option.

Craters and Freighters is the other choice, but they aren't everywhere.

Shipping

I called Craters and Freighters first and got a recording that they were shut down due to severe snow?!So I called transit systems and I was welcomed with open arms by them and they are going to get it for$750 which I thought was reasonable. I first got to see one of these machines running last year at Jon Charles house during the wash-in.The one he had was really nice and I was quite jealous however the one he had did not have a window lid like this one so I bought this machine if only for spite.

Freight cost

mayfan69's profile picture
Hi Mark,

Can I clarify the freight: so, it's costing you $750 to get from one side of the country to the other? If so, that's a very good price!!

As a comparison, I got a quote from YouCrate to get a Maytag set from Colorado to John L's in Baltimore and that was going to cost me $1535.

Obviously, it was a set, not just the one item, but maybe I should get a quote from Transit systems considering Colorado's a little closer than Oregon.

Cheers
Leon

A long thread of humor and convolution, congrats to you Mark. Good luck with the shipping costs. Whatever happened to Jackie - is she competitive to U-bid?
