Hi everyone,

new member here, delighted to discover this forum as I need a new washer and am in dire need of help.

My requirements:
- front loader
- internal heater
- 110V
- DIAL controls (yep because I'm OCD and I like to mix and match the cycles)

I doubt that such a machine exists any more, given that all manufacturers seem to be in love with digital controls these days :( :( :(
any help would be appreciated!

Nope.

Out of luck. Any FL today is digital.

If you can give up the internal heater, Speed Queen makes a FL with knobs.

But its basicly digital as well. No 'timer', and as far as I understand, I think that is what the OP wants to get mix and match cycles.

EDIT:
I forgot about Staber. Toploader, but with front-load-ish washing system. Terrible reviews, expensive, no heater, but a 'timer' control.

I dont know of any knob front loads, but Speed Queen makes up for it in speed and quality. Worth every penny, that I can say with confidence.

thank you folks for the speedy responses. I think my only hope is to find an outlet that sells discontinued models....

But no water heater, If you want an extra hot wash just get a 120 volt 3-5 gallon water heater and install it with flexible hoses in the cold water inlet of the washer. Then when you want a really hot wash turn on the WH 15 minutes before you start the washer and you can easily have a hot wash temp in the washer of over 140 degrees. When you start the washer just turn off the extra WH and the cold water will continue to fill through the WH without it boosting the water temperature for the rinses.

We have installed various brands of FL washers this way over the years, the reason we install the WH on the cold water line is so you are not drawing your homes hot water into the extra WH where it will just sit and cool after the wash fill is completed.

What size of loads are you washing?

I know you said manual controls because you want to mix and match cycles...

I ask because I have never had as much control over my cycles as I do my Miele washer. And I love my built in heater... I haven't found one as efficient at heating the water like the Miele is.

You can add water and extra rinses in the service menu, and the machines just work... Heavy little .. buggers too..

If you find a dealer that will sell you NCC2 (floor model) or NCC3 (store demo) units, a heck of a deal can be had. They will still have a full warranty.

Don't think you'll find a front loader with an old style timer. If you want a good front loader with the heated water option, there are many to choose from. I personally have an LG made Kenmore Elite set that does a terrific job of cleaning and extracting water in the final spin. The dryer works well too. It is pretty flexible on the cycles as far as what options you want and you can pretty well customize the cycles. I have heard that Maytag/Whirlpool makes good machines too. I do know that LG is not made in the US, but does seem to make very good front load washers. Not so much with their top loaders, but then most HE top loaders aren't too well thought of. Speed Queen does have a front load machine too, but usually quite a bit more expensive and has less features, such as the heat boost for water. If I were purchasing a new washer and had a budget, I would just pick the one on sale and hope for the best.

True Bruce

most all washers have an electronic timer, even if the knob looks mechanical.

I don't think anyone asked for mechanical timers or would want one for that matter.

No FL washer sold in this country has not had a circuit board that at least controls the motor since the last 3 belt WH style washers rolled off the assembly line in 1988.

That is a Hotpoint/Indesit (basicly) carbon copy of a EU design and is just as digital as any other FL.

Post# 873675 , Reply# 16   3/21/2016 at 13:16 (2,951 days old) by 1v2p3g ()

my understanding is that SUMMIT is the US branch of ARISTON.

My previous washer was/IS SUMMIT and I've been very happy with it. Internal heater, good spin, knob controls so you can stop the cycle at any time and mix/match... and it wasn't too expensive either when I got it, 12 years ago.

Maybe if I could find someone to replace the bearings I could keep it around for longer and then I wouldn't have to worry about a new model.

The Ariston brand doesn't exist anymore, I guess it got killed in the problems with the Indesit company. The washing machine linked is the same as the Hotpoint Experience:

They have some interesting appliances. I like the dishwasher too. They seem to be aimed at ADA compliant stuff.

ok, so I have to give up on the knob controls, as expected. The new requirement list is as follows:

- 110V
- internal heater
- separate rinse-only cycle (since I cannot mix/match cycles, this is the closest I can get to a temp-controlled prewash)
- fits under counter (less than 34" high)
- under $1000

The only options available in the US seem to be:

GE WCVH4800KWW
Electrolux EIFLS20QSW

The electrolux has the steam advantage, but many reviews mention a failed board (that's why I hate digital!!!). The GE doesn't have steam and reviews report balance and other quality issues.

any thoughts?

What about this cute little guy?

I would do the lux before I would do the GE...

I do not like GE's non-American machines.

American made machines are EXPENSIVE and aren't any better than foreign made ones. In fact, many of the foreign made machines are much better. So lots of luck. I have had good luck so far with my LG made washer and dryer front loader. Does a remarkable job on everything, but I've said that before. I just got the new consumer reports which has a feature on new washers. It rates LG front load washers top as far as having no repairs within the first 4 years. Also rates LG dryers top in that respect too. I would go with whatever is the best priced unit with all the features you want. It seems like a crap shoot these days anyway.

I'm leery of combo washer/dryer machines - more components to break!

Bruce, right on all counts, expensive AND crap shoot! Maybe I'm just putting way too much thought into this.

I have this Electrolux. I like it a lot. It gives you good cycle control. If you look in the manual you will see all of your actual cycle choices. You can add a rinse to any cycle. I am not aware of any but possibly the most high-end machines that will allow you to select a hot rinse, or even a warm rinse. I have not yet read any reviews about board failure in this machine. I certainly believe that it is possible because all of the newer machines are likely to experience board failures; electronics, heat, and water are not a good mix. Because my laundry area could take a vented dryer and vented dryers dry faster, I bought the GE compact electric dryer. I did not buy the matching Electrolux dryer, which is a condenser dryer as reportedly all condenser dryers heat the room they are in.

the verdict!

so the Electrolux it is! It arrived 2 weeks ago and so far so good. It has a rinse and spin cycle which I set to 'no spin' and use it as a cold prewash. It only takes 6 minutes and does the job of wetting the clothes so that they don't get shocked by the hot water of the sanitizing cycle. It's also very roomy and I find I don't have enough clothes to fill it! But that's a good problem to have :)

So far I don't like three things: there is an alarm at the end of the cycle that cannot be turned off permanently (you can turn it off at that moment but you cannot disable it completely); once you start a cycle you cannot stop it unless you unplag the machine; the touch-screen is spiffy but does get stuck some times and I am worried that it will not last long-run.

Anyway, the die is cast! I'll post updates as time goes by. THANKS to all of you who offered feedback and made this decision easier!
