Where is the heater in these top loaders, please? Is it just a big round heating element in the bottom of the outer tub? What would be the wattage? Does it heat before it begins washing or during agitation?
Thanks. Tom

The element loops around the bottom of the outer tub, underneath the basket.

In the Whirlpools, it replaces the plastic shield in the top of the coin trap.

You set the required Temp, Loadsize, cycle, add detergent and clothes and turn the machine on.

Depending on the model, it will Fill, agitate for 1 increment (on Super wash only at the very start) and then it heats for the next 60mins or so, depending on whether you had a cold, warm or hot fill. The automatic models with the pushbutton timers, required you to use a jumper on the timer, if the machine was cold fill only.

Ususally there were two temps, at about 40degC and 60degC.

Once the thermostat is satisfied, it then advances into the wash and continues as normal.

If you had a cold fill then all rinses were cold.

The element was usually between 2000 and 2400 watts and would run on a standard household circuit. Due to the time and amperage required to heat, most of them didnt run the wash motor during that time.

Nathan, Thanks. Is there any trouble with clothing on the bottom getting too hot since there is no circulation during heating? Thanks.

because of natural convection

And the heavy metal bowl, with 90L of water, it never seemed to pose a problem. A bit like boiling a pot of water I guess.

Plus 2400watts in all the water isnt really a high powered element. I've got one machine that runs with a heater, and when its heating it sounds like an electric kettle.

The Semi-Auto whirlpools, had a pressure switch, to make sure the heater wouldnt come on until there was enough water in there.

Heaters

The later Hotpoint UK filter flows had intermittent agitation whilst heating to disipate the heat, also when filling with ATC on the lower temp fill.

The heater is placed in a well in the outer tub, shaped in a double loop like the twin tubs, similar to the pic.

Its amazing how little she's aged in the last 30 years.

My dads mother when I was small, had the blue hair, with the wing glasses and to me always looked like Dame Edna.

Mum knew what I though, but unfortunately she never told me not to call Nanna, Dame Edna.

I only did it once to her face, and got a smacked tooshie :)

LOL

I love that story--that's fantastic, Nathan :-P

Yes, she really has aged very little--I was stunned.

And, of course, glads for all :-) ("Wave that glad, and grab life by the stalk!")

:-P
