Good afternoon to you all. I was curious about the 1995 GE washer video demo when their polypropylene tub washers came out. I have yet to find a video demo of it on youtube. What did they show on the video? I know that GE did a phone book test during the spin cycle on the video. Did they compare washing quality? I've always wondered why I couldn't find the video on youtube. What are your thoughts on the video? Thank you to all my fellow washer fans.

product features

I wondered if GE bragged about their autobalance suspension system.

Autobalance

Highly over rated imo. Under rare conditions a slightly off balance load can trigger a resonant condition where the tub bangs violently into the wall where it otherwise would not. These machines also accelerated to fast going into spin.

When I was looking at buying my 2004 GE machines, the salesperson at Sears demonstrated the washer using the phone book test, which I honestly found impressive at the time.

The GE I had did suffer from the occasional unbalanced load where the tub would repeatedly strike the cabinet, but even when the machine sounded like it was destroying itself, it was smart enough, or it seemed like it was smart enough, to ramp down the spin and then ramp it back up again.

The washer did have a multi-stage spin speed as it ramped up in speed, where it would spend a certain amount of time at a certain spin speed before proceeding to the next higher spin speed.

I suspect that the technology which went into my 2004 vintage machine wasn't too far off from the 1995 vintage machines, short of Microprocessor control.

2000 GE

My 2000 GE does that too. During the wash cycle, it would start on normal agitation for the majority and then go down to gentle for the last few minutes of the wash. It will do the spin speed stage where it starts out slow, then go to fast. By the way, I wonder if GE compared the wash action on their demo video. Chetlaham, when I first got my GE set in approx. 2001, I expected the filter-flo and minibasket. The machine shook on normal/fast speed during agitation. I thought it was gonna break apart! I am already missing the '80's style GE pair! Same design as my '93 that I had. I could be wrong, but GE started having the push to start buttons in '96 if you can correct me. My 2000 has a push to start and cycle indicator lights so I believe it is electronic. The knobs don't move during operation. I can't fathom how it has lasted so long, let aloned improved in cleaning quality. I was always under the impression that the filter-flos of the '60's, '70's, and '80's cleaned better than the post filter-flos did. I wondered how GE made their plastic tubs so strong. I thought those would break. Period.

GE had square reinforcing spacers on the other side of the inner basket, which while it added great strength, would retain water droplets and dirt. The machine would develop an oder when hot water was not used for some time, and it was not uncommon to see occasional black floaters in the water. I wish I took a pic of the inner basket when pulling it out a few years latter. Here is what the reinforcements look like at 4:23:

The model I had was a 1998 and it was single speed. Going into spin was always the high winding so my machine did not have this advantage. The delicate cycle was also high speed agitation with no pauses or soaks.

to be honest...

The regular cycle sounds like the whirlpool on the GE's.
