My amazing KitchenAid works fantastic but it has started making a squeak noise when the pump stops (right before drain). It is sometimes intermittent but I'm not sure what to think or if it's even anything to be worried about. Sometimes I can barely hear it and other times it's very noticeable. Anyone know what is causing it?

Thanks!

Squeaking KA DW

combo52's profile picture

Hi Joe, you and everyone else should always mention your model # of your appliance when asking a question if you want serious and accurate responses.

If you have a porcelain tank KA with a reversing motor it sounds like the pump seal may be squeaking a little as the motor starts or stops. Usually this is no real cause for concern. The pump seal is lubricated by the water detergent mix etc that is circulating in your DW. I have seen cases where this is more likley when too much detergent is used compared to the amounts of oily food soils etc that the DW is being asked to wash away.

We have been able to hone the seals and eliminate the noise in some MT, WP and KA DWs that do this by running a cycle with about a 1/4 cup of BonAmi or Barkeepers Friend cleanser in the DW. This might help, but overall I would not worry about it much unless you want to RB the pump and install a new seal assembly which could do as much good as harm unless you are very good at working on the particular pump assembly your DW has.

Joe,

it's fairly common on the older W.P. Sears, and K.A. dishwashers before the separate wash and drain pump types. It's just friction on the seals and moving pump parts. Mine did it for years.
If it bothers you, put a half cup of vegetable oil in and run it empty on a short cycle. It lubricates the seals and quiets it up for a while.

Ok thanks! It's a KDM-21, that's the model number on the machine lol. Is there something else I'm missing?

It started after I used those Cascade pacs actually...probably from too much froth. I'm using Cascade Complete powder now. Maybe I'll try a little less.

Well...

I tried the vegetable oil and that didn't work. Though it made the plastic on the lower wash arm, very black and new looking! haha. I'll try the Barkeeper's Friend today and see if that works.

My PowerClean would do that every once in a blue moon. The first rebuild was with mostly preexisting parts, and the squeak was more prominent, so I rebuilt it again and installed a new seal kit and impellers, and it was fine, just with a tiny chirp after the pump stopped, very very rarely.

If your KA's pump assembly is what I'm imagining, it's very similar to a Whirlpool PC setup so the impeller and motor seal should be the same. If you do ever decide to do a rebuild, you'll see why the squeak happens occasionally; there is a steel ring under the drain impeller that rests against the nylon(?) part of the seal that is directly surrounding the motor shaft. The impeller spins against that but because of the materials used, there isn't enough friction to speak of, especially with water present, and with proper dish soils being washed along with proper detergent and rinse aid. If you hold the seal and impeller together and turn it by hand, before installing, you'll see what we're talking about.

One word of warning: if you ever decide to rebuild, make super sure that you bolt down the drain and wash impellers and the filter module down to the shaft before pouring any water into the tub. I made the mistake of "testing" the seal that I had just installed, so I put a cup of water in, which promptly went straight to the floor. I realized that the impellers actually have to be mounted and bolted down in order to create the seal, so just putting that word of warning out there for you!

Cascade Pacs

I tried those in my KDS-17A one time.  Then hubby used one in the KDS-20.  What a mess!!  All those suds!  These must be made for machines that use 1Tbls. of water surely not for our water guzzling machines!!  Nothing but Cascade or Finish powder for me.  Whichever one is on sale.  I have good luck with both.

Haha thanks Andrew! I don't think I'll be rebuilding but you never know. I did the Barkeepers Friend this morning before work and after running it this evening, no squeaking!

The pacs work really well but they really aren't designed for these older machines. I won't be using them again.

LOL!

When I read the thread title first thought that went through my head was you finding a squeaky clean in near perfect condition Kitchen-aid.

Squeaking KA DW

Hi Joe, Glad the BKF worked, but I dough that the detergent pacs had anything to do with the noise in the first place, many-many KA, MT, WP DWs would have the same squeaking sound from their pump seals long before DPs came along.

Interesting fact was all three brand DWs I mentioned use the same size and type main water seal in their pumps and they are interchangeable, I usually bought them from MT as they sold them individually and had a much better price.

Thank you John! Yeah I imagine it would have happened anyway lol. I can't complain because this beast is 31 years old and works flawlessly! I absolutely love it and am glad I was able to find one. I usually only have to run it on Light Wash for my normal daily loads because it cleans so well.

The BKF also cleaned it pretty well, though it sudsed so much it was started to seap out at the very end of the cycle. I ran it on the Rinse cycle..then did a couple more runs to get rid of the residue.

Mine is a Hobart build machine, does it still have the same seals as the WP ones? I know they changed them a little bit, but not much right?

Andrew you need to download your brain so we can all use it. You're a wealth of knowledge! :-)

Oh lord, there's honestly not much up there to download haha. I have what I've learned from my childhood years of scouring any and every document or parts schematic or manual I could find on appliances and cars and the like. The rest is just what I've had experience with on my own, but I'm nowhere near as knowledgable or experienced as someone like combo52-John.

Andrew you could be my twin separated at birth.
I used to have a binder with brochures and appliance schematics as a kid; we're talking 10 or 12.
Used to draw machines, dishwasher pumps, car engines all the time.
Would take my parents' 70s GE dw apart weekly after school to study it.
It had the stainless wash arm, where the holes could be bent with a screwdriver......so I'd modify my own spray patterns. LOL.

lol! Nothing wrong with being inquisitive. I've always been interested in machines, but usually experimented with cooking. When I was 3, I climbed out of my crib early in the morning and went down the kitchen where I proceeded to make everyone breakfast. Threw a dozen eggs in the popcorn maker, shells and all! Hahahaha. I vaguely remember it actually. :-)

Boys and their toys! ;)

I never braved taking applIances apart though ;-)

Okay so here was my binder. I had more brochures and manuals that have been lost to who knows where, but I've still kept most of it. I'm sure there's a couple more spiral notebooks with sketches somewhere.

I had a couple of things from the original Oasis launch, and the KitchenAid booklet for our washer which I LOVE. I still look longingly through it wishing that marketing these days would be as informative as back then.

And then pictures I printed out in 2005 of the PowerClean I so desperately wanted. I was ready to give my left arm for my dad to let us return the Nautilus and get that model PC. Then the installation manual for the Atlantis; I have the user manual but have no idea where it went.

Then my sketches: we have the PowerClean/UltraWash, before I had any idea that the design name was PowerClean, plus at that point I had never been able to see under the hood, so I thought the motor was horizontal the same as the cheapo DuraWash my neighbor had sitting in his garage, lol. Thank god I was wrong. Then my grandparents reverse rack JetClean, and then a Franklin tranny Frigidaire, and clearly we see here that I had not learned yet that Kenmore used Frigidaire's design, not the other way around as I was told back then. And then finally, the sketch I did of my aunt's PC, where it sits at the end of the island. I even drew where the carpet meets the linoleum and the power outlets at that end of the bar. Oh the memories....

Omg I love it! How old were you when you did those sketches? I like the Oasis machines. The color looks the same as on the Calypso models.

When I was a teenager I used to make up airlines. I had full timetables and everything. Oddly now I'm going on my 16th year working for an airline and I want to poke my eyes out at work everyday! Hahaha. Sometimes I wish I could just be an appliance salesman. Lol
