Tom is right, these soild disk burner electric stoves are terrible! My Mom had a cooktop with these soild burners, I don't recall the brand, it was some obscure European brand that my stepfather dug up, a real POS. They are slow to heat, slower still to decrease temp when the heat is lowered. And one of the burners on Mom's stovetop developed a crack in the disk and was no longer usable. There was no way that we could figure out to just replace this burner, as they don't just unplug and plug in like a traditional coil top stove. And because my stepfather wouldn't spring for a new cooktop Mom only had 3 burners for the last 20 yrs. of her life. If you want to be sure to have buyers remorse buy this range.

It's just a personal preference. I'm probably among a minority on this one--I've used them almost exclusively forever. Prefer them over coils, actually. Never have understood the hatred for them…it's just a learning curve you have to take on when getting used to using them.
Heat control is not the same as coils, obviously. My particular range is a Jenn-Air with the Euro/ solid disc burner cartridges which are something like 3000 watt or 3500 watt. PLENTY powerful and they heat up quite quickly. Yes, they are slower to cool down. For daily use when new to them, it's just a matter of spending time with one and understanding when to make adjustments to heat levels. Also, I've always loved the fact that they are perfectly level / flat and hotspots aren't a problem (but maybe that's my specific model of range top). If you have an opportunity to try one out before buying--do so! Cleanup-keeping them looking good is not horrible (to me, anyway). My burners are approaching 30 years of age and still look quite newish. If you tend to boil things over or are sloppy with your cooking process then yeah, you'll have some issues. But they clean up easily and you can keep them looking fresh by wiping down with a light coat of veg oil now and then. Once wiped, turn them on full blast until they smoke a bit (burns off excess oil). They'll look just fine. |
