These were posted on Craigslist last week by an estate sale liquidator, an amazing find to say the least as the 1965 TOL Norge made Montgomery Wards washer was very low use and the gas dryer was never hooked up!!!!

Amazing to see such an old set in such great shape.

What captured my eye was that water level selector. Interesting design decision they made, by putting the pointer behind the glass like that.

Also, noticed the "Safety Spin" sticker. Makes me wonder if they ever made machines that didn't stop spinning when the lid was lifted?

Congratulations on your find. I hope this set serves you well.

Interesting, I think that year they were still making the solid tub machines too. I remember having one that had controls similar to that one and it was a solid tub model. I guess they were still making two different size machines back then.

3-speed Norge

appnut's profile picture

No John, just 2 speed.  that's the exact number of buttons (1-8) as our Norge, said Norge 15, and I bet the exact same programming of each cycle, all the way down to E being hot wash/cold rinse normal agitation/slow spin.  That dryer has the modulating burner.  the dryer cycle sequence/position was exactly like ours too.  And IJKL are cycles that have the max of 12 or 14 minutes to add extra minutes to the programmed letter position on the timer dial.   Bring back more good and bad memories of our Norge pair.  Yes, Wards always had the scrubber cap. I'd like to see a close-up of the dryer panel so I can see what all the cycles/lettering is.  Our stop&dry was a horizontal lever on control panel that corresponded to the water level slider on the washer. I had a love/hate relationship with this washer.  cycles weren't like a Lady K.  THAT was how you did laundry and cycle selections.

Robert, do they need anything at all like hoses or any thing that would be deteriorated after 51 years?  Also, how were they kept, climate controlled  I'd suppose in a very clean home without pets etc.?   Just Curious.

That little square lid is for the sprinkler.

We have a Wards Her Majesty dryer with the Norge version of Soft Heat. It did not continuously modulate down, but ran on high until the exhaust temperature reached a certain point then finished drying on the lower BTU input. It has auto dry like this one. Norge did not offer auto dry until after Wards had it for a while, sort of like the Kenmore self-cleaning filter in the washer years before WP was allowed to offer it.

Stop-n-Dry physically disengages the drum from the drive for non-tumble drying, just heated (or non-heated) airflow.  Presumably there's an accessory rack for shoes and such?

Other than "WOW" and those are really "STUNNING"! Robert I'm amazed you are able to find the machines you do.

Talk about the "right place at the right time"... WOW! And a never used dryer too? I repeat: WOW!

I have NEVER seen a scrubber cap on any brand other than a Kenmore!  Very cool!

Do you have a gas line in your basement or will the dryer remain a "virgin"?

How neat that is has the older style agitator and it's not a solid tub.

Very cool and CONGRATS!!

There is a rectangular, spring-loaded rack. If the dryer drum is stopped so that two of the vanes are at 4 and 8 o'clock, the rack can be placed across them and shoes and stuffed animals can be placed on the rack to dry. If the drum is stopped with two vanes in the 10 and 2 o'clock position, the rack can be squeezed in from each end so that it will fit between the vanes and delicates like nylon hosiery can be drapped over the two bars to flutter in the hurricaine-like wind.

Robert, was the dryer rack included? Tom did an accurate description of the rack in reply #37.  This is my favorite dryer rack arrangement of all time.  Nothing else compares to it.  But the flexibility came from the stop & dry and tub fin positions.

Who saw today's POD?  There's also a POD of our Norge version--schematic/advertisement.   Both of these have the filter system design I've never seen in reality.  It had a filter stream spout at 12 o'clock that went out to an agitator mounted filter pan.  but I guess it didn't make it to market with the GE Filter Flo being patented I imagine.

Amazing how you can find them so pristine Robert. Amazing set here! Love the "safety spin" sticker still intact and in good condition.

I always felt like the lip of the outer tub jutting out from the underside of the cabinet so far into the wash area always looked "awkward" on these Norges. Anyone else know what I mean?

Were the machines still physically in their boxes or packaging when you got them?

I'm speechless as well. My godmother had a washer pretty much just like it. It ran for years and years without repair. My own mother had a 1969 Montgomery Wards Norge as well. It didn't hold up quite like the earlier version, I think it started leaking at the bottom. These Norges were the ultimate water hogs on high settings. The machine you have is fabulous, very well built. Quite possibly THE find of 2016 so far.
PS: If I found that machine I'd replace my 2015 SQ in a heartbeat, or at least supplement it anyway.

I'm speechless.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. The washer had a few minor issues from sitting unused all those years that I corrected, but otherwise now works fine. The machine has a four minute rinse agitation cycle but the fabric softener dispenser is injected during the last minute of rinse agitation directly into the recirculation system. I didn't think that was a very smart design, so I took my Dremel tool and gently modified the softener cam inside the timer so it dispenses in the 2nd minute of rinse.

The dryer is gas and I put a splitter on the gas line so I could hook it up. It works just as it should to dry clothes, however since it was never used the rubber drive tires that the drum sits on have flat spots and the dryer thumps quite loudly. All those years of the drum sitting stationary on the one side of the rubber tires has pretty much killed those parts. Heating the drive tires does very little to quiet it down. The other problem is it seems to leak water out of the filter port due to dried seals. I tried replacing them with closed cell foam, but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference.

Here was the original ad for the washer...

Well, I'll make an editorial comment.  The softener dispensed rapidly and we never felt it was too late in rinse cycle.  Gave a chance for residual suds to be agitated out of the load and the final minute the softener neutralize said suds--i.e. suds killer.  That was the only thing I didn't like about the Kenmore 800--2 minute rinse.  Kind of a come-down from the Dispense-o-Mat.

The dryer is pretty noisy when tumbling even when in proper working order.  Sometimes I'd stop the drum rotating just so I could hear what a normal dryer sounded like.  Always kind of a ka-thunka thunka.  After about 5 or 6 years of age, the safety switch would stick "on"/"in" unless you pulled on it when you opened the door.  I never bothered.  Open the door to that first notch and permanent press would billow out with that forceful air blower/circulation.  Kind of like a butler handing me a garment or two to hang up while tumbling.  (always while using fluff when hanging up clothes).  That routine kind of conditioned me to this day.  All my dryers I let finish the cycle and then put on air fluff and keep tumbling and pull out two or three garments to hang up, thus no non-tumbling wrinkles.  that 3 position hamper door spoiled me for life being able to lay the door flat against the bottom of the dryer to unload the load into laundry basket.  Thus I'll never own a drop-down Whirlpool dryer model again (the Lady Shredmore's mate.  If I ever have to get one to replace my Maytag Dependable Care, it will be a Maytag with side-swing door and top-mounted lint screen.

Absolutely Amazing!!!

Beautiful machines and in such pristine condition.
Congratulations to you. They look great in the Coppertone.
I must admit, I love some thing about this group. In reading all the well-wishes to you on this awesome find, it's like a huge Family where one Member just "adopted" a child. That shows just how special these machines are to us all and how close a group of caring people for them are when another finds one.
It's quite wonderful actually.....
