Hi, newbie here, I've just bought a Hoovermatic 3310 and a hotpoint empress, My question is what wash powder is best to use in these machines does anyone have any preferences. Any advise is much appreciated, Thank's Kev.

Low suds

Personally I would go for something low suds. Having used Hoovermatics on and off over many years I find that the high suds powders available now are very difficult to rinse out. Back in the 1970's Persil was brilliant at rinsing. The only ones that compare now I would think are soap flakes. The last time I used a Hoovermatic I used Sainsburys Bio and found that very easy to rinse out. The only other own brand powder I can recommend through having used it are the Waitrose ones.

I'll second that. When I had a Hotpoint Supermatic, supermarket own brand powders worked well in the wash and were the easiest to rinse out. With branded powders, it would often take five or six rinses until I felt the rinse water ran clear enough for my liking. High suds powders were even worse, and would not rinse out acceptably unless I refilled the wash tub for a deep rinse, negating all the time and water saving benefits a twin tub is supposed to provide.

Soap flakes work well, but AFAIK their production has been phased out now in favour of the liquid version. Worth a try, but unless you already have perfectly soft water, you will need to use a water softening agent in the wash in order to ensure a good lather and prevent scum forming. Adding a separate oxygen bleach will kick it up a notch too.

Hi, I used soap flakes in my Hoovermatic (cant remember the model) and Hotpoint Supermatic and it managed alright. I use Dri pak soap flakes...after a quick search online I found them, but theyre listed at £115 and above which is odd... But I found them on this US website which I'll link you to. No idea why, I will continue searching for you.

Chris

Liquid soap flakes

I've used Dri-Pak Liquid Soap Flakes. They give great results, rinse away well and leave clothes really soft, without many of the harmful chemicals found in other washing liquids.

Dri-Pak makes these soap flakes, under their own brand and also for Tesco - £3 for a 750ml bottle.
Also they are soon going to be available under the Wilko brand and can be ordered via click and collect. Previously Wilko sold it in their shops for £2.50 so it's really good value.
