I recently purchase a Maytag E2L Wringer Washer. I am not sure how old it is. It has an aluminum agitator. Number engraved in the tub 125A70T.

The agitator works fine without water but when filled and clothes are added, it doesn't agitate unless the top of agitator is pulled back a little.

We noticed the agitator stop ring was missing and we purchase a new one and replaced. We also noticed that the rubber on the agitator spline rubber is unevenly worn and possibly not grabbing like it should. We did purchase plastic spline (A4931-P that is supposed to replace A4931 steel/rubber part) from Phil. Unfortunately, the plastic spline does not fit over the agitator gear on the tub and is too large to fit in the agitator hole. So may not be the correct part??? or we need installation instructions???

I am hoping someone has some ideas for us.

I have used wringer washers years ago and it's pretty ironic that this wringer seems to be the exact model as my first wringer washer and recall how it should work.

Someone who knows more may come by with more info. For now..
If you post a pic of your washer, agitator, agitator post, ect, may help us figure it out.
Have you talked to Phil and explained your problem? Think you may have the wrong part (plastic spline)
Could it be possible that your washer is supposed to have a different agitator? (not the aluminum one)

IN IMPERIAL copy and paste into search 36465 1948 Maytag E2L ( complements of Kenmore71) Shows great pictures of an E2l agitator and tub spline, a 1948 machine.

I have a newer model that uses the blue agitator..

Hope this may help.. Hang out and someone that really knows Maytag wringers will chime in.

Your machine was born in June of 1949.
Not sure if 49 models had aluminum agitators or not. Not sure if The splines on the aluminum agitators were different than later ones?
Anyone know?

Hello and Thanks for the information

 The pics Kenmore71 posted looks exactly like the one we have so the 1949 year is no doubt the correct year.

We have determined it is the metal/rubber spline (A-4931) that we need to replace. The rubber part is worn badly. The attached photo is a pic of what a new one should looks like and I wish we could find a replacement part.

We have tried to do the MacGyver thing. That's why it's been a few days since I've posted as I was hoping to report some good news. The spline likes to move up into the agitator too far. We inserted a stopper to get the spline to stay at the correct level and glued on a thin piece of roofing rubber over worn rubber. This does work for a short period of time but as soon as I try to do a heavy load of jeans or towels, the rubber breaks free a bit and agitates only slightly.

I have thought about ordering a replacement agitator but I am concerned it wouldn't fit much like I thought the plastic spline replacement part (A-4931-P) was supposed to.

Last resort, I will just find another wringer washer and use this one as my rinse tub like some do. :)

send Phil a picture of the part you need. Also a picture of the agitator. that may help him make sure you get the part you need. It can't hurt to try it.

Thanks - Good thought.
I did give Phil a call when the plastic replacement part would not fit. He figured we were on the right track of trying to find the original part and did not have any on hand or replacement agitators that he could part with. I emailed Dave earlier with pic to see if he has any ideas or even actual part# I should be looking for.

In the meantime, we are trying to find an adhesive that will work for rubber and aluminum and water resistant or drilling/installing some sort of removable pin through agitator that would not stick out of agitator and damage clothes. (without being a pain to remove the agitator between uses - we do not want to rust to agitator gear)

Like I mentioned earlier.... MacGyver-ing :)
So any ideas/suggestions are very very much appreciated!

The part pictured is unfimilure to me, don't think I've ever seen that?
I can't understand why Phil wouldn't have a plastic spine for you to remove and replace the spine in your current agitator? Maybe Dave will have one, or or a replacement agitator.
You might email Geoff here in the forum or Larry, as they have rebuilt these machines from top to bottom and may recognize this, and know of a more permanent fix.
There's a solution to this!

I don't think any glue will work . . .

 I think your best bet is to get a new teal colored agitator. Those work with any post war E2L washers. I think that's why you see so many of these in washers that originally had aluminum, red or black bakelite agitators. Phil sells new ones but Dave Harnish may have a used one. His email is drs@sosbbs.com. Sometimes he has salvage machines in his barn. He got me a replacement aluminum tub a few years ago. Don't forget a new stopper ring.

Follow Up

 I did manage to find the replacement spline from Bunker Hill Appliance in Northburg, Ohio phone# 330-893-3700. They typically press the part in the agitator for you. We ordered the part and pressed it in ourselves. It wasn't an easy task and special care was needed as we did not want to crack the agitator. I would suggest having a professional press part for you.

Finally, with patience and persistence, the washer is working awesome now!!!
