Can anybody tell me any revolutionary history regarding the Servis Quartz 600, apart from being one of the first washing machines to be controlled by microprocessor, I.e was they the first to use electronic door release, first to use fault codes? Thanks

Servis launched a computer controlled machine long before the 600 called the Selectronic.

Servis Quartz History

Hello Jack , Servis Domestic Appliances UK entered the front loader market in 1972 after a successful 43yrs with top loading washing machines. The first front loading automatic was the Servis MK72 set, a compact machine which washed 9lbs of clothing all in a 22 1/4 inches cabinet, a mean feat when other washers taking the same load where 27 - 30 inches wide. It had a vitreous enamel inner and outer drum which sat on 2 suspension struts mounted on a rigid frame.

Hot & Cold Fill, 740rpm spin speed, 7 main wash programmes following HLCC wash codes, a simple dial timer and programmer. washing powder dispenser. wheels for easy movement.

Servis Quartz History

In 1975 the Research & Development team at Servis where in discussion with a small electronics company in Cumbria, this later became a working collaboration and then incorporated into the Servis company.

In 1976 using the existing MK72 compact front loader they developed an electronic control panel which was a simple bank of switches corresponding to the 7 HLCC code wash programmes of the time. You simply pressed the desired button and the washer selected that wash programme and all actions such a Temp fill, heated the water, washed for correct length of time then rinses and spun 3 times before switching off. Using a computer wiring loom this eliminated the large mechanical timer and masses of electrical wiring. It also made it much more reliable.

In 1976 and at the UK`s largest electrical trade show, AMDEA - (Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Electrical Appliance ) Servis UK presented a World First, The first computer controlled washing machine in the world, The Servis Selectronic. This was truly a red letter day for the Darlaston company.

In 1978 the Servis laundry line was re-vamped and updated with the Slimline cabinets on a plinth allowing a taller neater style for fitted kitchens etc. The fascia and cabinets where brown and complimented the dryers.

As Paul mentioned above, The Servis Selectronic version 3 made its debut. Now with a 3 compartment detergent dispenser and an electronic door lock / release.

Servis Quartz History

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Over the next 2 years Servis continued to develop the worlds first computer controlled Selectronic washing machine. The R & D team at Servis UK started to work with the research team at Proctor & Gamble at the technical center in Newcastle and in the servis factory. Servis had an extensive customer base and offered their customers an in depth Servis contract , for a small yearly sum you had a contract on your appliance which in the event of any breakdown the engineer would attend and fix your machine, as the slogan says "If It Ever Lets You Down - We Wont"...

With this information they contacted customers asking "What They Wanted From Their Washing Machine" the P & G team then developed together with Servis a new formulation of washing powder using the latest in biological washing enzymes and low foaming powders to get the best out of your new machine.

And so in 1982 after a year of "Secret Testing" in existing customers house (you where told not to mention anything about it, to cover the washer up if you had visitors etc...the Servis Quartz made its debut along with Ariel Automatic, the best low foaming washing powder to date.

Another great technical advance was the introduction and development of the "SpinCare" drum, instead of hundreds of holes in the washdrum Servis offered a solid no hole drum for gentler fabric care. Instead of holes 3 vanes front mid and back of the drum allowed water to enter for washing and to drain when spinning. Again another World First.

On of the new wash programmes is a 30 minute Quick Wask, a cool wash 2 rinses with fast spin for refreshing items of clothing. Also by using the latest washing powder , Ariel Automatic, you could select a Multi-Fabric wash, this was a low temperature mixed fabric soak and tumble, up to 24 hours, which by using the latest biological enzymes, dirt simply floated away....In this one wash programme you could mix loads usually from 3 separate washes and obtain great results.

Having used these washing machines I cannot state how simple they are to use "Press & Go" and having repaired many and now dismantled them for spares, the ease of disconnection and repair with a simple computer ribbon to the Quartz Chip Computer Control board, the Power Board and all main components such a motor etc.

When an issue arises, the Servis Quartz will present a flashing Error Code, allowing you to look up and simply clear a pump blockage or turn on a water supply, if an engineer needs to call he simply plugs in a computer diagnostic control unit and can quickly identify the problem.
