The other day when I called the local appliance repair guy about my 1959 dryer, I happened to mention my washer. It's a

Kenmore 80 series Heavy Duty Super Capacity Plus
Quiet Pak 3 speed motor w/ 4 speed combinations
model 20852 990
ser CK 2432912
type 111

He said, "It's probably on its last legs."

WHAT???

I bought it from Sears in 2000 or 2001.
Wash average 1 to 3 loads a week. (I live alone.)
Sometimes I wash only a half-load.
Warm wash, cold rinse.
Have NEVER had a problem with it.

WHY would he say it's over the hill??? I asked him, but he didn't give me decent answer. Just said it's 15 or 16 years old. So?
Most of my appliances last into their 20s and 30s, so I was shocked at his comment.

This guy was/is THE go-to guy for appliance repair in my town for several decades.
He might be in his late 60s now or even 70 something. He pissed me off when he said that.

It's only 15 or 16 years old.... a mere teenager!!!

Nothing better then a sight unseen diagnosis. I'd say that his advice is worth every cent you paid for it.

Clearly it sounds like he has no interest in keeping older machines running. The dryer is a good example. Yes it is old, but dryers can run forever. Sure parts availability is sketchy, but it could be a dead simple problem or one involving a part that is still available today. Again, he never looked at the machine, he has no idea.

The washer may run many more years, especially if you find a technician interested in providing service vs unsubstantiated advice.

Ken, I don't know. If he does, that may have something to do with it!
