--Who unfortunately killed a customer there, over some dispute, then committed suicide in a remote area a few miles away, afterwards... (Probably to be beyond reach of the law, in a lot of forms...)

The story confirms that Harold had worked post-show business career, installing & servicing washers & dryers, as in working for Speed Queen, perhaps in a sales/parts/service/repair outlet-capacity, but 'franchise' could also seem to say more of it being that it was a Washerteria, and there's also a story at Internet Movie Data Base that also chronicles this late-actor's legacy after Little Rascals/Our Gang, hence also cited as it being a laundromat, he was owner/operator of:
