If I ever had to replace my 35 year old Maytags, those are the exact models I want.

Mine showed up in early May.  You will get much happiness out of laundry day.   It is a joy welcoming new Speed Queens into your home.  These showed up on my doorstep.

Another thing to love

SQ's will only dumb down the water temp on Normal/Eco.  I never use that cycle.  Otherwise true hot fills abound.

Congrats! I felt the same way about my AWN542: It was like owning a brand new vintage machine.

Hi, Ben!

Speed Queen Rules

I bought a new Speed Queen top load washer about a month ago, I am amazed how much cleaner my clothes come out compaird to the way my old Kenmore cleaned them. I recommend a Speed Queen to anybody looking for a new washer.

My set is about 5 Years Old now.

I bought that model washer and the TOL dryer. I think it has been a good machine. I wish the spray-rinse was more thorough----and it is if there is a really big load of clothes. Otherwise most of the water just drops to the bottom like a modern Norge. It does have a full "deep-rinse" for each cycle---thank Heavens! Don't care too much for the "leaning tub" issue during agitation. Mine leans pretty far towards "2" O'Clock.

I found my (gas) dryer to be a bit slow! Usually my gas dryers have been pretty fast. I took it out of service early on and she sits and bides her time these days.Very low mileage. My 1969 Whirlpool Gas Dryer is the best dryer I have EVER owned and it got put back to work! Even my '53 Filtramatic is faster!

I got an identical set for the "office".
Strangely, since we use a lot of (single-bed size) sheets I discovered the machines have a habit of twisting everything up into knots when doing a full-load of them!
Not since the Old Rustinghouse slant-fronts and small-tub Frigidaires have I seen such a mess! The last issue I would have expected from these machines! If we add a mixture of towels and sheets the problem stops! That washer tub leans to the 6 O'Clock position. My friends in Atlanta have a set and that washer also leans towards 6 O'Clock. My Israeli friends here in Roanoke have a set and that washer leans to 4 O'Clock.

Nonetheless, I am quick to reccommend the brand. Everyone I know with them is pleased with them.

My pair is seven years old!

I have the AWN 542 and matching electric dryer!
Use and abuse them! They're work horses!
Yes the tub leans during agitation, so what?
The tubs always re sets itself for the spin and NEVER EVER goes out of balance.
Best of luck to you.

Question: Is the tub supposed to index during agitation? I also noticed is doesn't seem to do so on the "Delicate" cycle.

I've had mine since mid-April, and I'll say it again; after having had to go back to a T/L after owning F/L's since 2000 (I couldn't afford a SQ F/L) it really IS a swell machine, and I'm glad I bought it; from what I've seen on these posts, and on YouTube, the HE T/L's didn't impress me all that much. I'm still having difficulty getting used to it running a complete cycle in a half-hour, or so! (lol)

No worries

The indexing will eventually stop when the factory applied lubricant wears off the brake shoes. It won't index on the deliate cycle at this point because the agitation stroke isn't as fast.
No worries it's working as designed.

Mu tub leans to the right in agitation. Why does it do that? Also i know the softener dispenser comes off to clean it but how does the two parts of the dispenser disassemble?

Post# 898126 , Reply# 18   9/10/2016 at 14:37 (2,777 days old) by Gyrafoam (Wytheville, VA)

I usually just take the softener dispenser and soak in a a pail of hot, sudsy water then use a tooth brush to scrub it out. Mine just pulls apart to reveal a tiny cup inside. I ended-up having to take a die-stamp and widen the holes at the lower part of the barrel (agitator) to keep softener from plugging them up.

Even after about five years, the tub in mine continues to index slightly, however, that doesn't really bother me as much as tipping-over during agitation. Seems as though I heard somewhere it had to do with a torque issue.

there something about the torque of the motor that causes the tub to lean.....SQ doesn't see it as an issue, so nothing to correct it.....I added foam inside the cabinet and front panel to keep it more centered....and even more quieter.....

the dispenser should twist apart to clean.....

mine is a lot older, so a few changes I did was, drilling out the water valves for a 50/50 mix, clothes pin for the lid switch, and sealed off the back of the fill flume so all the water falls into the tub....my agitator is solid versus the power flex of the newer models.....

did you know a Dual Action agitator from a GE Profile will fit the SQ drive bell....

Didnt know that about the agitator from the ge fit the sq. My fill flum fill completely in the tub and angled to the right to hit the clothes during spin. Next wash i do ill video the spin spray.
What kind of foam did u use to level out the tub and how u secure it in place?

you have to trace back through some threads of how they attached these.....but basically, you have to find an old agitator, and cut off the vanes and such, as to have something to attach the new agitator to......

if you follow this link.....further down, you will find a solid vane agitator.....and our own DanManTn did some videos of the two in action...

the foam I used was that egg crate type used for beds, cut to fit and glued in place....

After 3 months

all is well with our SQ AWN432. Never enjoyed washing clothes as much as I do with
this model. Cycles are done within 30 minuites. Will get the matching dryer once the Whirlpool goes.

an interesting question for you guys......

even though I have the washer.....how does the dryer rate?....not just drying, but the end results.....how do the clothes come out after drying is done?...

and here is a prime example.....but is really noted to the ones who have had a Kenmore/Whirlpool dryer....and now have switched to the Speed Queen....

and JohnL will probably be the one to know the insights/schematics to these machines...

I too am all for matched sets, most everything I have is a matched set......the Neptunes are OK for drying, to get the same results I am looking at, is to dry everything on LOW....on any machine for that fact that doesn't offer this soft heat feature....

where as a Kenmore/Whirlpool (and a few others) offer this 'Soft Heat' drop down temp feature that makes all the difference in the world for drying results, mainly wrinkling, which I don't experience with these types of machines.........

like I said, only those who have got the chance to use both will understand....

so hence, my Ken/Whirl gets priority for perfect results at normal temps....gas or electric....

I have the pre-moisture sensor model

Bought about a year after I got the washer. Only a thermostat controls the drying. And it is all mechanical.

90 per cent of my drying is on delicate. I use Hot/high for my cleaning rags.

I'd rate the performance good however it could benefit from a moisture sensor as sometimes, even on delicate, the laundry is a tad over dried. Perm press is acceptable with a nice cool down cycle/extended tumble.

All in all I am happy but I give a very slight edge to the GE due to the moisture sensor shutting things down before the clothes over dried.

hi frig!

I had a whirlpool dryer for many years. Now have the speed queen.
It's best not to get the speed queen dryer. IMHO.

I don't recall over drying in the whirlpool. The speed queen is hard to set.
Also during cold weather the dryer takes on a funky smell. The galvanized steel smells like metal left out in the cold.

New SQ Dryers

combo52's profile picture

Are decent sturdy dryers, they are fairly fast and run a little hot and the mechanical timer models are hard to set the dryness level accurately.

That said the 29" WP built dryers are still the best overall dryers ever built anywhere in the world. No other dryer gives the performance, speed , durability, easy repair ability and longevity. We are talking about a design that has been in use for 50 years and it is not that uncommon to see machines that are 50 YEARS OLD still working great.

But like many things in life if you get a new SQ dryer your satisfaction with it will depend on what you had before. About 6 months ago I sold a customer a new SQ gas dryer that had one of the last HOH MT dryers, needless to say the customer was blown away with how fast and gentile the new SQ was compared to the old MT HOH dryer.
