Hi all,

I seem to be on a roll altogether recently, especially where it concerns Hotpoint's offerings of the 1970s!

This was a very coincidental Gumtree find. I had been searching on Google about the Best Buy range of 1978/1979 that was based on the final Liberator models and when I typed in "Hotpoint 1700" I noticed a picture that I had never seen before. Prior to this I was only aware of one picture of a 1700 that had been posted by Matchbox Paul here so I clicked on this new picture and I was redirected to a Gumtree listing which I very quickly pursued and the delivery took place yesterday.

So here it is - the Hotpoint Super Dryer 1700 from the Liberator Best Buy range of 1978/1979. It's virtually immaculate apart from the Best Buy banner which I hope to reproduce and the kickstrip which has had one too many encounters with a mop it seems, nothing some spray paint in the correct colour won't sort. It works perfectly too, but I'll open it up and clean out any fluff etc. I'm absolutely chuffed with this one and it will look lovely with my 1509/05 once that's sorted soon. The date code is 12 which equates to December 1978 which means this is an early one as the Best Buy range was introduced in December 1978! Does anyone have the user handbook for this? It's probably just a reprint of the 1701 handbook but it would be nice to have.

Now where is that 1827?! The adverts will be up and the looking glass dusted off. To anyone who stumbles across this thread from anywhere else in the worldwide web and happens to own a 1827 which looks like this dryer but with four buttons and a detergent dispenser - Please do not hesitate to contact me wherever you are if you wish to sell your 1827 to a good home where it will be loved.

That's all for now,

James

Hi Hass,

Thank you for your kind words. I am so happy that a 1700 has surfaced at the right time for me as one did appear on eBay a few years ago but my circumstances were different back then - waiting patiently does pay off!

I'm so pleased that a particular part of my collection is building favourably and the end result will be beautiful.

I should have some time this week to inspect the 1700 interally and possibly sort out the kickstrip. The sticker will have to wait until I get a few quotes from local printers.

The others will be revealed when suitable but I'll keep you posted.

James

Hi Luke,

You're certainly right about the build quality of these old 17 series dryers! I shall be painting the kickstrip on Wednesday. Who knows, maybe a 1827 will surface yet!

The kickstrip issue has now been rectified. Looking fab I reckon!

Hi James.

What shade did you go for in the end? Whatever it is, it looks a good match.

Haven't yet congratulated you on the acquisition of your 1700. What a difference a non yellowed fascia makes - finally we get a true feel for what the best buy Liberators looked like, with their white detailing. I have already deleted all previous images of yellowed 1700's from my archive - yours could be the definitive.

I wonder of yours was an ex-display machine, what with the big 'BEST BUY' sticker, as well as the corner sticker?

You going to touch up the lower edge of the main front panel - curse those wet mops! lol.

Roll on the unveiling! Lots of BIG photos suitable for archive use please. :-)

Paul
p.s don't know if you noticed this from a previous thread ....

Only known image of the 1827?

Hi Paul,

It's Peugeot Midnight Blue, you are probably aware that Halfords no longer sell this colour off the shelf but their larger stores offer a paint mixing facilty that can produce any colour you request at the cost of £9.99 for a tin or £14.99 for a spray can. I'm relieved to hear it looks good as I wanted to do the machine some justice.

I understand you are busy at the moment so don't worry, you're here now haha! Yes, it is nice to finally see an example of the Liberator Best Buy range in a relatively white state and I'll be taking precautions to keep it that way. I'll take plenty of big photos for your archive once I get the 'BEST BUY' banner reprinted, I think it deserves a new one. I will do the smaller touch up jobs once the machine is in its new home.

Funny I didn't think about that scenario, maybe it was an ex-display model? I saw that lovely advert on your fantastic Hotpoint thread. I really do hope that someday a 1827 will be standing proud underneath my 1700 but the odds don't look to be favourable.

James

Hi all,

It's been a while but I finally got the 1700 looking like it should again!

I found a local shop that specialised in producing vinyls for cars, vans and commercial premises but they were easily able to reproduce the Best Buy banner and Liberator triangle carried by this machine. The end result was amazingly accurate and so genuine looking. I'm absolutely chuffed to see this lovely dryer looking it's best again.

Now where is that 1827???

Also, if anyone wants some stickers for their own Liberators please do not hesitate to ask me and I'll order them for you on your behalf as they are of a very good quality and the price is most certainly right.

Merry Christmas,

James

HI James, Fab work as always. I'd be interested in a Liberator triangle for the 1509/10...

Hi Rob,

Thank you, I'm glad to hear you like it! No problem, I'll place an order for you in January and get it posted to you straight away.

The sun was briefly shining today so I took the opportunity to take a couple of pictures of the 1700 in natural light and they ought to be posted here. I really am happy with it and I think it will look so nice beside my own 1509 until it can sit on top of a 1827.

James
